We ordered Himmel un Aäd, mashed potatoes mixed with apples and served with blood sausage. Crisp on the outside, creamy inside, salty, savory, and deeply comforting. It pairs beautifully with the bright, refreshing Kölsch. If you want a true Cologne brewery experience with great beer, classic food, and a sense of living tradition, Päffgen is a fantastic choice and highly recommended.

Lovely old-school brauhaus. Service, beer, and atmosphere were good. Reasonable prices too. My food was not hot on arrival, so I felt I needed to eat it quickly, before it cooled down further, but the taste and portion size were good. It was quiet when I went, so the service may be different at busier times.

NEVER AGAIN – it was bizarre how the Köbes spoke to me when explaining why, at 23:15, he or the entire place did not want to open another barrel. Even more bizarre was that he addressed me in English because he assumed I was a foreigner. Nowhere in the world have I ever been spoken to as disrespectfully as by this man. I have no problem with the decision not to open another barrel, but I do expect basic respect and a calm, educated explanation. Do not speak to people in this verbally aggressive way; if this is considered a “trademark” of Köbes culture in this city, then there is a clear limit. The situation felt doubly uncomfortable because he assumed I was a foreigner.

This place deserves 5 stars! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was great Contrary to what I have read in Google reviews, the waiters were not at all rude or impolite, quite the opposite in fact

Traditional Cologne brewery. Lived the atmosphere. Waiters play part of traditional service. Beer is excellent and food very tasty. Price is good

Excellent beer with good service in very traditional surroundings. Seemed a more 'authentic' brew house experience compared to some of the more central tap rooms. Beer is tapped from very old looking barrels in a way that I assume they've been doing for well over 100 years. Didn't eat there but food looked decent enough.

Enjoyed here so much! Great beer, great service, generous portions of food! I had a pork nuckle, and it was delicious. My wife had a schnitzel, but it was a bit boring, but big portion, so can't complaint. Definitely recommend this authentic place, one of the best in Köln

Food is decent, nothing spectacular. Reasonably priced. Good creamy Kölsch! Come here for the classic brewery atmosphere. It helps if you speak some German.

Amazing stop while in Cologne. The vibe inside is all about enjoying fellow beer lovers and great German hospitality. The evening's second stop, but one of the most memorable. Everyone in our group of 20 or so were well oiled with glass after glass of Paffgen Kolsch. Why, we even had a tattoo showing! Our bar tender & guide were even in on the fun 'n games. Many Schlock's & giggles.

I had a sausage with fried potatoes and the meal was wonderful. The sausage was very lean as well. Course. We had several cold shoes which went down quite well. The beer garden was comfortable and inviting.

Do yourself a favor and on one of your nights in Cologne, drop by this place. Our first night in town, this was our first destination. We could not have been welcomed to Germany in a better fashion that by coming here. If you search YouTube for restaurants in Cologne, this place will most likely come up as an option. Watch one of those before you come and it's very accurate to those. The thing you need to know is that they WILL NOT stop bringing you beers until you place a coaster on your glass, and that the food is authentic and delicious.

Päffgen has a large interior unroofed beer garden, quite pleasant and airy. Kölsch comes in small glasses; the expectation is that people who order it will drink several. If you empty your glass, one of the circling waiters will spot it and replace it with a full glass from his tray full. If you've had enough, you need to cover the glass with a coaster. The staff tracks beer consumption on the back of a coaster on your table. The food is good enough. The 3/4 Meter Bratwurst with mustard and Bratkartoffeln was delicious. Himmel un Äd - "heaven and earth" - (blood sausage, mashed potatoes & applesauce) must be an acquired taste. Salat Schnitzelstreifen (salad with breaded schnitzel strips) was okay.

Took a day trip to Cologne to discover the wonderful world of Kolsch. Paffgen was on my priority list as many have stated it to be the best kolsch in the city. I left here echoing those same sentiments. The kolsch was crisp, cold and delicious. I made my way to other Kolsch places (Fruh, Muhlen, Peters, Gaffel) and it stood out to my palette as the best. For food, I tried blood sausage for the first time! I loved it! The texture is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It is no longer a novelty dish for me - I would genuinely order blood sausage over more standard dishes from now on because it tasted that good. It was served with potatoes and apples as part of the Koln "heaven and hell" specialty dish (i.e. apples from sky, heaven, and potatoes from the ground, hell).

Service: 1 star. Like a lot of the breweries we visited in Cologne this one was very busy, which actually adds to the experience. After having a few glasses of their delicious Kölsch we decided to come back another day for dinner since their menu looked good and the atmosphere inside is cool. Unfortunately, when we paid, our waiter insisted that tip was not included. This happened only a couple times during our week in Germany, but it's very annoying since we know the tip is always included (you can leave a few coins if you want or even a small tip if the service is great.) They know that Americans are used to tipping and while traveling I have noticed that some will try to take advantage of unaware tourists. I am French and they don't do it to me since they know we don't tip in France, but my husband is American, so it's interesting (and sadly disappointing) to see how differently we get treated depending which of us talks. Anyway, we could not even decide about tipping or not since the waiter did not give us a chance, keeping a few extra Euros for himself when giving us our change, with a big smile! So, Brauerei Päffgen might be a good place for food, and according the reviews it is, but we'll never know, because we certainly did not go back. And forget talking to a manager when the place is so busy and most people barely speak English. Very frustrating!

Cologne has its share of brauhauses. Is that how you make German words ending in s plural? I honestly have no idea. Beerhouses. You get it. I merely wanted to pop in and indulge in kolsch. Upon entering the building, there's a long hallway with small round tables set against the wall. I grabbed a chair and posted up to drink two beers. I had prime views for bartenders filling up their beer trays. I even got to see a new keg being lifted in and installed! They have a mechanized pulley system installed over the area to pick up the kegs and place them. Smart. And better for your back. I was also near the bathrooms so I people watched as inebriated folks in costume (I was in Cologne a few days before Carnival) stumbled by. My favorite was a guy dressed in Harry Potter robes who nearly walked into the wall. Don't text and walk ya'll. PSA. Kolsch beer comes in .2L glasses and new ones keep appearing until you either request them to stop or place a coaster on top of the glass. Waiters track how many you've had by marking your coaster. It's an ingenious system really. A kolsch here was about 1.80 euro. Decent prices and good beer. They have food too and a larger room further in the restaurant. I didn't creep around enough to see that, but give it a try!

Came here solo at 6pm. I sat myself down and the waiter was helpful. He asked if I wanted pork knuckle and suggested #502. It was huge and came with sauerkraut and smashed potato. The knuckle was pretty good but I had better ones in Germany before. They would keep giving you small glasses of kolsch as you finish, they were awesome and it's what I came here for.

Classic German brewery perfect for kölsch beer. Make sure you get the milchreis/reis!! Best in my life and I don't even care too much for rice pudding

always a great stop for beer and good German food. The service is great and quick. For me, the Paeffgen is one of the top three Kölsch-Places in the city. I can highly recommend the tartar, Himmel en Äd and loads and loads of Kölsch. BTW - if you are vegetarian, you only have 1,5 options ... then you will have to stick to Kölsch

Really cool place to get Kolsch beer which is served in small glasses. They have a very interesting payment/serving system for the beer, which is fun to watch and try to figure out. Additionally the server kept our tab on a coaster I was using that we saved, very fun spot. The brats were very good as well, some good fine authentic food and beer. The place is open later than they advertise, I think we were there until about 1am on a weekday.

Nice and cosy place, typical German. The food was good, nice portions and good quality of the food as well, good beer too but nothing letting me say "wow". The service was quite poor and not really kind, the place was crowded of course but it doesn't mean that your customer are less important and that you have the right to pay less attention to them.

I would take a visitor here for a authentic german beer hall experience. It's communal tables which creates a friendly atmosphere. We tried the 3/4 meter bratwurst and it was delicious.

Awesome Bier garden experience away from the the touristy areas of Koln. The staff were really funny and the food was delicious. I stumbled upon it by accident and really glad I did!

If you are looking for typical German cuisine... Stop here!!! The real German biergarten atmosphere and menu.. The kolsch beer is born in this town and PAFFGEN kolsch beer is awesome! APPROVED

Going through Köln looking for my favorite type of Kölsch wasn't easy and until my last stop I couldn't decide. My last stop was here and have heard good things about Päffgen Kölsch but since you can't buy it in stores I have never tried it. Well once it hits your lips you instantly know it's the best. It has the most distinct taste and is different from all the others I thought. More refreshing of a beer. This is easily my favorite Kölsch beer. A must go to for any tourist, visiter, or beer lover.

Cool place to go and have some authentic German beer and local food. We were with a large group and the waiter was not very happy with us at first but in the end he was very helpful and pointed out some local specials that we should try. He also kept the beer flowing. We ended up sharing a bunch of different food and drinking a lot of beer. In the end we did not spend all that much money and had a nice time.

I walked into this place by myself on an early Friday afternoon. It was recommended as one of the better beer houses in Cologne, with all the traditional amenities that were to be expected: lots of beer in small glasses, surly German waiters, and good hearty German food. I sat down, pouring over the menu in German (which I can't read) and picked out the most obvious German meal I could find that I knew I'd like: the 3/4 meter Bratwurst. And sure enough, a few minutes later a steaming plate of sausage showed up, along with said small glass for beer that was replaced whenever it was empty, without hesitation by the wait staff. Tradition is something that can be celebrated, and Paffgen does it with style. I wanted a traditional Cologne experience, and I wasn't disappointed.

The local place to my hotel so many Kolsches were consumed with all the gusto possible when faced with a thimble of beer! My feelings about this place are probably a bit biased as it felt like something of a local by the end of our stay! Ate here a couple of times. A standard sausage and also some unusual cheese dish . Enjoyed both!

One of the best places I've ever been to in my life, end of story. Unlimited, crisp, cold beers coming by your table every 5 minutes. Delicious German delicacies (sauerkraut, haxen, mashed potatoes, apple sauce, etc). Waiters are kind and pretty funny. But the #1 here is the beer, you can drink it like water without emptying your wallet.

Not a place for tourists or if you are not fluent in German. The menu is in German and waiters only speak German. I asked for the bratwurst and the waiter only told me NO, no explanation about it. I got out after only having one small glass of beer. This is definitely not a place you should go without speaking fluent German or with a German buddy.

This is the best kölsch in Cologne. Go for that alone. I did not try any food, so I cannot comment on that. I was with a Münchner, so I cannot comment on treatment of tourists or difficulty communicating with waiters.

Delicious fresh brewed Koelsch bier, tasty food, and an awesome biergarten. I had the white asparagus and ham. Both were very tasty. My fiance had the roast beef and potatoes. The remoulade and roast beef were awesome and the potatoes were really good too. The biergarten is quite nice.

Really fun beer hall in Cologne. The beer was great, of course, and the food was also really good. There is a nice patio in the back, which was great in the warm weather. It was a fun place to relax on a Friday afternoon with lots of other groups of both Germans and tourists. My only "complaint" was that they only serve their potato pancakes in the winter and spring, which I had looked forward to trying.

If you want to experience a brauhaus and get the complete appeal then this is the place. You get to enjoy the culture, be part of a community and may get to experience yummy food. I went with a group and learned a lot about the Cologne area, however, not a fan of German food or Beer so the appeal was lost on me. For others who enjoy that, then this is a must type of place.

No TV, no wifi, no music or any modern amenities - which adds to it's charm. Old hall with lots of seats, high ceilings and wood decor. I get why people like it here. Also a outdoor area out back.

Nice and friendly typical German restaurant. Be prepared to drink tasteful local beer: no alcoholic drinks are limited (only water or sparkling apple juice). Tasteful dishes and big portion with reasonable prices. Do not forget to try as well the digestives at the end of your dinner. Everything accompanied by a really friendly service.

Unfortunately we came here with friends in order to show them a traditonal Brauhaus and despite the fact that the waitstaff is friendly, the food was of a really poor quality. The Sauerkraut tasted like it was store bought and came out of a bucket and the fish was absolutely terrible; it tasted old, cheap and was so tough that it was hard to chew, it was a huge disappointment. Atmosphere is pleasant and Kölsch was fine, but stay away from the food and go to a different Brauhaus to eat; there are plenty more in the city who serve decent food.

If you want to be looked down at and drink a Koelsch, youre welcome to go there. If you think you deserve to be treated with respect, go somewhere else, i.e. I recommend Früh Brewery.
