How to Beat the Heat When Traveling in Europe This Summer | Condé Nast Traveler

The 26 Best Things to Do in Rome

"The Palazzo Massimo's building itself was built by Jesuits in the late 19th century and was only turned into a state-owned museum in 1980. It's next to Stazione Termini, Rome's busiest station, yet few travelers make the trip to see the museum's masterpiece-packed halls. The collection is a mix of Classical sculpture, Imperial frescoes, and Hellenistic baroque-style statuary. After the Vatican Museums and Capitoline Museums, the Palazzo Massimo is a must for ancient art lovers." - Katie Parla, Maresa Manara

"If one single space encapsulates the Roman Empire, it would be Palazzo Massimo, Rome ’s multilevel museum housing one of Italy ’s richest collections of antiquities. The entire history of Rome , from the rise of the Republic to its imperial transition to its fall, is told through sculpture, mosaic, frescoes (watercolor paintings), and coins. Get to know generations of emperors by checking out their marble busts, then hang out in the 1st-century Villa of Livia dining room of Caesar Augustus's wife. Note: Palazzo Massimo is part of the National Museum circuit, which means ticket holders can also access three more national museums (Terme di Diocleziano, Palazzo Altemps, and the Crypta Balbi) over a three-day period."

"Palazzo Massimo presents ancient Roman interiors by using original frescoed interior walls. Removed whole from Roman bed chambers, dining spaces and kitchens, they’ve been hung in rooms of the same proportions. Stepping into Livia’s garden room is like being outdoors – its walls depict such horticultural details that you can almost hear birdsong. Still more intimate is the room-by-room recreation of a villa of the Augustan age. It’s a reminder that ancient Rome was a riot of colour and was often more alien than we imagine."

The National Rome Museum is now spread across four venues around the city, including Palazzo Massimo near Termini Station. Opening hours are 9.30am to 7pm daily, closed on Tuesdays. Entry is now €15 per person which includes entry to all four of the National Rome Museums within one week of purchase. The other venues are Palazzo Altemps, Crypta Balbi, and the Baths of Diocletian. The collection at the late 19th-century Palazzo Massimo is very impressive. You will find floors filled with ancient sculptures, excavated mosaics and wall frescos that are in remarkable condition and state of preservation. The 'Boxer at Rest' iron sculpture on the ground floor is one of my personal favourites in Rome. The Ermafrodito Dormiente' Hermaphrodite sculpture and Sarcophagus of Portonaccio are two other highlights I really enjoy seeing at the museum. The Villa Farnesina and Villa of Livia frescos are so interesting to view and learn about as well. All in all, I believe we spent just over 2 hours viewing the museum collection at Palazzo Massimo this time around. You can visit in an hour or less if willing to make way through the collection at a faster pace or give yourself 3+ hours if you like.

Gorgeous, well organized, and has a good flow. Very affordable, with lots of information in both English and Italian. 3 floors of stuff to look at for €15. A few pieces from the exhibits were on loan but they had pictures of them in place. Not busy at all, I saw maybe 10-15 other people the whole 2 hours I spent there. My card wasn’t working when I tried to book in advance but it was the same price to buy in person, so no worries there. Would definitely recommend. 👍

Great for Ancient Roman history & art. Really enjoyed the busts of various emperors & the women in power, the beautiful Roman calendar, & the mosaic floors. There is a lot to see. Wasn’t crowded when we went on Wednesday. Tickets only can be purchased by credit card. The gift shop doesn’t look like it’s functioning anymore, it was empty of all goods.

Repurposed 19th century palatial building housing a magnificent collection of classical Roman sculpture and mosaique, in a contemporary display, under perfect lighting. A must for connaisseurs.

To me, the third floor would have been the most interesting, if I'd had time to explore it more (reconstructed Roman villas). Otherwise, a decent museum and close to Termini train station if you're looking for something cultural to do while killing time before taking a train. Lots of statues and mosaics focusing on Roman art and history.

A ticket will allow you to visit several museums across the city. I like the experience, it’s not crowded at all, very quiet. They close at 7pm, which allows you to finish other sites first.

Great museum with loads of interesting items. Plenty of room inside. I would’ve loved to see The Boxer but sadly he was on loan somewhere else 😕Also on our visit the aircon was broken. The staff had placed portable ones in every room but it was still a tad uncomfortable but despite that we managed to see everything and we had a lovely coffee in the cafe there. My mums in a wheelchair but they have access round the side and lifts for every floor and she enjoyed it too.

Stopped by on a whim just after opening on a Friday morning. Started at the top by elevator because I don't do stairs. Was immediately blown away by the wall paintings and mosaics. Phenomenal room recreations and detailed descriptions on English. Amazing sculptures throughout. Well worth th 15€. Hardly anyone else there at 9:30am. A real treat.
