I am a NY diner (aka “Greek diner”) aficionado. I grew up on Long Island and waitressed my way through college at a diner in Nassau County.
Sadly, many of these diners have closed, which is a great loss. Happily, Viand still stands as a shining example of a classic diner. The service is warm and friendly and the food is honest and straightforward. It is well-prepared and well-presented, providing excellent value for money.
The staff is great. This is in contrast to other diners (I won’t name them), which know they are the only option in the neighborhood and customers are made to feel as though they are lucky to be waited on.
To visitors: skip the Starbucks and Le Pain Quotidien at head to Viand. It represents the best of what NYC has to offer. BTW, I don’t know the source of their bagels, but they are among the best in the city.
