38 Museums Devoted Entirely to Food, From the Delicious to the Disgusting

"The art of making gingerbread has its origins in the Germanic societies of the Baltic seas, making it one of the oldest traditional baked goods in Europe.  In the 13th century, as trade routes spread through Europe to Asia and the Middle East and access to spices from the Far East became more readily available, gingerbread production and quality dramatically increased. New flavors and baking processes were incorporated into age-old baking techniques and knowledge of these delicacies began to spread far and wide. Commercialized production of the gingerbread trade began to take root about the same time in Thorn, now modern day Toruń, which led to widespread demand for the delicious biscuits. In an effort to protect recipes and ensure quality, bakery guilds sprang up centralized in the area, furthering the industry in the region. Over the centuries, large companies began to dominate the Toruń gingerbread trade. The largest production facility was owned by Gustav Traugott Weese in the early 1900s. Today, his house has been turned into an interactive gingerbread museum where visitors can learn about the history of the trade, traditional gingerbread making techniques over the years, and even make, bake, and decorate their own gingerbread to take home." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

"In the heart of Toruń’s Gothic, brown-brick Old Town—which itself looks like it was built out of gingerbread—lies the Living Museum of Gingerbread, an interactive museum that opened in 2006. Toruń’s gingerbread tradition goes back much further, however, with the first mention of the sweet dating to 1380. At the museum, you’ll learn the story of Toruń’s famous gingerbread while working under the watchful eye of the Gingerbread Master to prepare the dough, bake the bread in traditional wooden molds, and, finally, decorate each loaf. After going through the fun process, you might agree with Frédéric Chopin, who wrote of a visit to Toruń, “Gingerbread impressed me most. Although I have seen the fortifications, and the famous town hall . . . all these cannot surpass the gingerbread, ah, the gingerbread!”"

I was really excited to attend the Ginger Bread Making Tour and even planned my entire day around it. English tour... I was given earpieces to listen but extremely poor quality sound systems. It was such a poor experience(they only working hard on the sales of thier gingerbread) which was deeply disappointing given how much I was looking forward it. Anyway just interesting for kids.

This was pointed out to us by friends as a fun thing to do, so we bought tickets and waded in. It's a museum plus interactive venue where you actually get to make some gingerbread. You are actually informed, however, not to eat the gingerbread you make as the process is rushed and the recipe is not quite right. Fun nonetheless. It's fun and informative, so give it a go.

Google
Great experience, you will find out how to make a gingerbread. Can buy tickets in advance online which is better way to avoid disappointment.

We visited as a family and had a wonderful experience. We joined the session with simultaneous English translation, which was very well done. The visit begins with a storytelling session that takes you through the history of gingerbread in the region, followed by a hands-on activity where you make your own gingerbread with traditional tools and guidance — a great mix of fun and learning. What stood out to us was not just the content of the museum, but also the warmth and professionalism of the staff — from the hosts to the interpreters, everyone was incredibly welcoming and engaged. There are also additional small activities that make the whole visit even more enjoyable, especially for kids. It’s truly an experience that appeals to both children and adults. Torun itself is a beautiful and impressive city, and this museum is one of those special places that reflect its rich history in an interactive and memorable way. Highly recommended, especially for families looking to enjoy something meaningful and fun together.

We booked the tour specifically for English speakers, but the experience was very disappointing. Instead of having an English-only tour, the guide spoke in Polish, and the English explanation was provided through earpieces with very poor sound quality. The Polish guide’s voice completely overpowered the translation, and I could barely hear anything. In my opinion, if you book an English tour, it should be conducted only in English, not simultaneously translated. To make matters worse, my husband’s earpiece did not work at all. We asked several staff members for help, but we were given a replacement only near the end of the tour, which made it almost pointless. The tour also felt very rushed, with far too many people inside at the same time. There was no sense of comfort or proper organization. Finally, after baking the gingerbread cookies we made ourselves, we were told to collect them. Unfortunately, someone else had already taken our cookies, and we were left with cookies made by someone else instead. Overall, the experience did not meet expectations at all, especially considering it was marketed as an English-language tour. I would not recommend it to English-speaking visitors.

Google
Fun experience. Staff/script was funny and translated to english via headphones. Informative about croissant making. Interactive- get to make your own. Added a decoration session to the experience for 8zl at the end and it was fun - plus the decorated bread was tasty. Seems there are a few Gingerbread Museums to ensure you're going to the one you think you are going to!! Only negative was the arrival experience was a little chaotic and staff were not helpful in reassuring us of where to go. Very busy with school groups (weekday in December) so book in advance, English option only available for some sessions.

This is a place you can’t miss when visiting Toruń. From the moment you enter, you can feel the great atmosphere—people are friendly and fun. It’s a fantastic spot for everyone, whether children or adults. You can learn how gingerbread was made in the past and even bake your own at the end of the experience. I recommend booking tickets in advance, as availability is limited and they sell out quickly.

We loved the experience. We were a bit surprised that tour in English was actually in Polish with the translation, probably something to clarify on the website. It was a great fun for adults, as well as children. Very playful and charming, I will recommend this 1,5h experience to everyone :)

Yelp
Best thing to do in Torun if you are a tourist! I strongly advise you to book ahead! You can even buy tickets online quite easily. There are sessions in English and they were quite fun! Made my own cookie :D great one hour spent!
