"A Palace Rendezvous in Al Ain Not as glamorous as Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi or the new royal residence taking shape in the Capital, the Al Ain Palace, former home to Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his family, is equally as interesting. The palace grounds are quite large and visitors are free to wander between the bedrooms, coffee rooms, store rooms, and majlis (sitting or receiving room). The palace was home to the founding father of the United Arab Emirates until 1966. On the day of my visit, the museum was celebrating Eid al Adha and several men, including the museum's Visitor Services Manager, greeted guests and welcomed everyone with Arabic coffee and dates while Emirati men swayed to the traditional Al Ayyalah - a dance that tells a story by no less than 25 men waving camel sticks and beating drums. Known for its oasis, Al Ain is a comfortable little town in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, about two hours from the City of Abu Dhabi."

"Al Ain Palace Museum is a notable landmark, too; it showcases life in a ruler’s fort prior to 1966."

5 Best Day Trips from Dubai

"Built in 1937, the palace of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was opened as a museum in 2001. Inside, many of the family's rooms and delegation areas are still preserved as they were. It's not an expansive museum, but much of the building and its surroundings are well-preserved and offer an accurate glimpse into the life of UAE royalty. Docents are helpful in navigating some of the rooms, as well as explaining their original purpose: The internal gate, decorated with verses from the Quran, leads to rooms used for international delegations. There's also an upper majlis, which received guests, and even a coffee room." - Laura Ratliff

I visited the museum last year in 2024. Al Ain Palace Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in authentic Emirati culture, the life of Sheikh Zayed, and the pre-oil era, all at no cost. A rewarding and comprehensive experience, especially during a tour that includes Al Ain Oasis and Al Jahili Fort. If you plan a future visit after the renovations, be sure to check the official reopening date first.

Al Ain Palace Museum: A Timeless Glimpse into UAE Heritage Nestled on the sun-kissed western edge of the lush Al Ain Oasis, the Al Ain Palace Museum—once the grand residence of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE's founding father—transports visitors back to a bygone era of Bedouin elegance. Built in 1937 from mud bricks and palm fronds, this eco-friendly architectural marvel blends traditional fort-like walls with airy courtyards, showcasing sustainable desert living that's both poetic and practical. Step inside for a self-guided hour-long wander through authentically preserved rooms: intimate majlis for guest receptions, cozy family quarters adorned with embroidered textiles, and storehouses brimming with antique artifacts. A replica Bedouin tent in the courtyard evokes nomadic tales, while Sheikh Zayed's vintage Land Rover stands as a nod to his humble desert journeys. Exhibits illuminate the UAE's astonishing transformation—from pre-oil simplicity to modern prosperity—offering profound insights into Emirati culture and resilience. What truly enchants is the serene oasis backdrop; stroll palm-shaded paths to the nearby National Museum for a fuller historical tapestry. Though signage could be more multilingual, the peaceful vibe, free entry, and genuine artifacts make it unmissable. A must for history buffs—leave inspired by Sheikh Zayed's legacy of unity and vision A must visit place..........

Very interesting. The place is large and displays lots of settings relevant to ancient lifestyle within the region. It recreated (hosting all the original items) bedrooms (of kids, wifes, servants, etc), a pond, coffee rooms, gardens and so on. You can get in for free and you can tell the museum is very well curated. Bathrooms are clean and it's wheelchair accessible. One tip would be to make the ramp (for wheelchairs) leading to the bathroom a bit less steep

We really enjoyed our time here. It doesn’t take long to explore, an hour and a half at most. Entry: Free The palace museum is very clean and well kept. The staff were so polite. We were traveling with our cat, and we couldn’t just leave her in the car alone during the extreme hot weather and they allowed her to stay in the staff room while we visited ☺️💕

a nice museum that actually used to be the former home of the former ruler of the UAE. a beautiful home to walk through and lots of history to learn. we were greeted with gahwa and dates. the staff was very friendly in explaining things to us. there are restrooms available. unfortunately a majority of the museum is outdoors and the parts that are inside do not have any AC. the parking is outdoors and not shaded either. still worth a visit!

A must see place if you are looking to know about the founding father of UAE, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The palace is well maintained and takes us back in time. There are well preserved artefacts within the palace. One can spend an hour easily exploring and definitely worth a visit if you're in Al Ain.

A good place to know more about the Emirate's culture and tradition. A big museum and many traditional things are displayed. The location is good and UAE architecture is also fantastic. A must visit place for tourists and children. Located in the middle of Al ain. Easily accessible area. Less.crowd and nicely we can spend our valuable time here with our family.
