Ambergris Caye, Belize, Travel Guide

"The food at Caramba Restaurant is so fresh "they'll let you pick out the exact fish you want to eat for dinner," says Richard Evanich, managing director at Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club. A seafood-heavy menu with everything from conch and snapper to lobster tails features Caribbean and Mexican-inspired dishes at what is one of San Pedro's most popular restaurants." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. "Try Local Cuisine at Caramba Restaurant From the first time I set foot on the island of Ambergris Caye, Caramba became my favorite restaurant in San Pedro. And that’s not changed, even ten years later. Rene Reyes, Sr. and his wife Patty have done a remarkable job with the restaurant. Every season brings something new and exciting – whether it be décor changes, menu enhancements or even new cocktail creations. The Reyes’ sons Jonathan and Renesito are now involved in day-to-day operations, keeping Caramba one of the long-standing family-owned and operated businesses on the island. Personal recommendations include Conch Fritters (seasonal), Sopa de Lima, Fish Tacos, Pibil Pork Sub and the Coconut Shrimp. Any of the seafood dishes are spectacular – go for the Maya or Tour Guide cooking options. Be sure to try one of bartender Charlie’s cocktails, like the Strawberry Beerita, King Margarita, or a special mojito. Not a drinker? Caramba has some of the best fruit smoothies on the island. Closed Wednesdays. Check Foursquare for current specials."

The red snapper and salmon were my favorites! Would definitely recommend picking from the catch of the day. Being able to choose how each fish was cooked was pretty neat. The restaurant is usually busy so try to get there early or make a reservation!

We were super excited to dine here after reviews and checking out their menu online but most of the menu prices aren't real bc you go pick your own lobster/whole fish (which is super cool but the pricing is very misleading). We ended up ordering the mixed fish appetizer and the conch and calamari were horribly over cooked. So was my calamari main course. And the seafood soup only had fish... none of the other seafood listed. The service and atmosphere were amazing but the food was really disappointing.

When I went here I got the burrito and it was pretty good. I didn’t wait too long for my food. The drink though? Was not good at all. The picture below is after I took 2 sips of the drink and did not like it, the server said that they do not usually do exchanges or returns because they already put it in the system. I could understand if I drank half of the drink but as soon as I tried it, it was an immediate no. They took forever to comeback to my table and they were not busy at all, only 2 other tables. I believe customer accommodations is something they should definitely improve on.

I researched this place on TikTok and was excited to go for my bday dinner for my visit to Belize. When we arrived we were able to pick our seafood outside of the restaurant. Our waiter was nice and respectful. We ordered a huge lobster, snapper fish, shrimp, mussels, calamari. When the food came out the presentation was very nice. After tasting the food every thing was super salty. The calamari was rubbery and very spicy to the point where my husband nearly choked on the combo of spice level and texture. We reported this to the waiter, who then reported it to the chef, the chef apologized and stated that’s how he seasons his food. We continue to try to squeeze lime on the seafood to see if we can eliminate some of the salt but it was too much. We ate maybe 3 pieces of lobster (82usd) 1 shrimp, 1/2 of the fish, 2 mussels. Another wait staff was able to speak to the manager, he said that they will take the food back and since we had already eaten some of it and the food was prepared he will take it to the back for them to taste to see if it was salty. They did just that and came back to apologize to say that they agreed that it was salty and that isn’t how they usually season their food. The manager offered 50% off the order. We were highly disappointed bc it was a waste of our $150 us for food we hardly ate. My dissatisfaction was shared with the manager and we left. Now things happen while cooking, but paying $150 for food that we hardly touched due to overly salted food was a big turn off and disappointment for me. There was no other resolution by management. Being a chef myself and owning a business, there is some responsibility/and losses a restaurant should have to take for food that isn’t to the standard of the restaurant, never the customer. Although the food looked good in presentation, it was overly seasoned and the experience was ruined for me. Will never return.

There were only two of us and we were set immediately, right before the dinner rush. I ordered the lobster coconut curry, my husband chose his own seafood, and we shared the crab stuffed jalapeños. Our entrees were tasty but neither of us would recommend the stuffed jalapeños; they didn't have any flavor and we were expecting them to be crispy (because they're deep fried) but they were soft and luke warm. The drinks were good.

I visit this place every year when I’m in San Pedro. The service this last time really put a bad taste in my mouth. A group of 6 of us spent almost $1,000usd and right after we paid they asked us to leave to get ready for the next party. I definitely get it if it was busy but the place was maybe 65% full with lots of tables still available and no one waiting for tables. Besides that the food is pretty good as always just on the pricier side of options available on San Pedro.

We had the stuffed chillies for starters, the fish curry and garlic butter fish for mains. Service was very fast, it is not a place to linger, you go in, order your food, it arrives in minutes and as soon as you've finished your meal, the bill arrives. It is a popular place with a queue of people waiting for tables at some point. Food was nice, too much butter for my taste, the fish was literally swimming in it but nice flavour. Not cheap prices but personally I found it a little too over rated. Again, food was nice but not up to the hype. Superb service though.
