"Hiking Roy's Peak in Wanaka The guidebooks say this is a difficult trek but well worth it. After a huffing and puffing trek to the top of Roy’s Peak, I would most certainly like to concur. 11k in approximately 4-5 hours, a decent level of fitness is most needed for this mission of a hike. Extra bonus if you have the ability to jump over and around sheep poo. Providing unyielding views of Lake Wanaka and the countless mountain peaks surrounding it, this hike takes you up along the mountainside through private land (hence all the sheep) and to the top of Roy’s Peak, a spot with 360 degree views of Wanaka and beyond. Be sure to check weather conditions and bring extra layers of clothing as it can get quite chilly at the top. The car park is just off of Mt. Aspiring road. There’s no restroom here, so be sure to take care of business beforehand."

How Technology Can Help Us Tackle Overtourism

"Roy's Peak in Wanaka, New Zealand, has become an iconic Instagram spot, leading to overcrowding with lines up to two hours long for photos. The area, which was previously less visited, now sees close to 100,000 hikers a year. The influx of visitors camping without proper facilities has created environmental and logistical issues."

Mind-blowing hike <3 We were lucky enough and had perfect weather. We were hiking for the sunrise and I recommend to do so because the morning light was beautiful for photos and contemplation! The trail itself was quite challenging and steep but also worth every drop of sweat :D

Best view in wanaka and def a great view of new zealand! Did the sunrise hike up. Worth it! But do wear proper shoes and bring hiking poles. My knees on the way down….. oh my lord….

Stunning views. Hiked up during the start of summer period and made sure the weather was clear. Path was not too bad, the incline was pretty intimidating especially at the start and the end. But walk at your own pace and you should be fine. More importantly, wear proper shoes with grip and hiking poles as they make the climb easier. Went to hike with my brother and would say that having a certain level of fitness definitely helps. We completed the hike (round trip) in about 6 hours due to the many stops to take pictures. (If you zoom in & look at the right side of photo 4, you can see the carpark you would have to park all the way below) Also did i mention the views were stunning?

It's stunning. I would love to go there to catch the sunrise, but it was so cold. I started hiking around 9 a.m. and came down around 4 p.m. It can be challenging, but it’s doable. And the view from the peak is absolutely gorgeous✨

The hike up was quite tiring and the slope was rather steep at the start and end of the trail, but it was definitely worth it as the views were amazing from the viewpoint. The views were similar at the top (around 30minutes uphill from the viewpoint), so you could just stop at the viewpoint if you are not up to it. There were lots of sheep along the way as well.

It’s absolutely beautiful, peaceful but quite a hard tracking course. Saw some cows, sheeps and birds. If you endure the steep tracking, you’d see a magnificent view.

Worth it! Beginner hiker! Definitely challenging but very doable with a good mindset. I would be going for Sunrise. We started at 4:45am and got up there with about half an hour to spare before sunrise. Took us about 5 hours up and back. Any later than sunrise and the path starts becoming quite slippery especially on the way down. Definitely recommend hiking boots but we didn’t need poles or snow spikes. Take water and snacks. The toilet at the viewpoint is quite dirty and no toilet paper so bring your own incase. Also no where up the top to refill water bottles.

Definitely one of the more challenging tracks. The incline is about 30 degrees all trough the track. The views are incredible!! Took us 2.5H up and 1.5H down.
