17 Best Hotels in Berlin, From Artsy Boutiques to a Transformed Bathhouse | Condé Nast Traveler

"A glamorous lit awning and door flanked by red ropes mark Provocateur's entrance. Step inside and you’re instantly transported to 1920s Paris , with a drawing-room-style lobby outfitted with plush, jewel-toned velvet seating, tin ceilings, deep black walls, and moody lighting. The building’s original 1911 gold-clad elevator ferries you upstairs to the equally evocative rooms. A swanky fusion restaurant and a stylish, buzzy bar round out the thoroughly seductive vibe." - Jennifer Ceaser

Provocateur Hotel

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? A glamorous lit awning and door flanked by red ropes mark Provocateur's entrance. Step inside and you instantly transport to 1920s Paris, with a drawing-room-style lobby outfitted with plush, jewel-toned velvet seating, tin ceilings, deep black walls, and moody lighting. The building’s original 1911 gold-clad elevator ferries you upstairs to the equally evocative rooms. A swanky fusion restaurant and a stylish, buzzy bar round out the thoroughly seductive vibe. What's the backstory? Amsterdam-based Israeli designer Saar Zafrir created the hotel’s sumptuous interiors, which snagged the 2018 German Design Award for best interior design. The hotel is part of the Frankfurt-based Gekko Group, a boutique hospitality company that operates hotels and restaurants in Germany and beyond. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? The hotel’s burlesque-style theme carries into its 58 rooms, replete with opulent chandeliers and rich red or royal blue velvet walls, furnishings, and draperies. But you’ll also find a whiff of Berlin debauchery—flip a switch next to the bed for “Provocateur Mode,” which dims the lights and reveals risqué video artwork by local photographer Kai Stuht. Categories range from Petite to Deluxe (opt for the latter to get a freestanding tub in the living area) and several have balconies. The two suites are worth the splurge: the open-plan Maison Suite has a nifty triangular ceiling punctuated by skylights, while the Terrace Suite's sprawling patio with city views can't be beat in warm weather. All rooms have Nespresso machines, minibars stocked with local products, smart TVs with screen-sharing technology, and a Marshall Bluetooth speaker. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Wi-fi is fast and free. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? Celebrated Berlin restaurateur The Duc Ngo created the menu at Golden Phoenix, whose Chinese-French fusion dishes—grilled foie gras with mango chutney and Sichuan pepper, Chinese truffle pasta, and a long list of dim sum—are beautifully presented in a lavish red-and-black dining room. Breakfast (not included in room rate) offers an a la carte menu of standard dishes. If the weather is agreeable, enjoy it al fresco on the garden terrace. And the service? Service is friendly and welcoming, and check-in and check-out are a breeze. What type of travelers will you find here? A stylish, well-heeled crowd frequents the bar and restaurant, so pack accordingly. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? East Berlin is better known for its hedonistic reputation, so opening an unabashedly sexy, sceney hotel on a sleepy West Berlin block is a bit of a gamble. The surroundings are unremarkable—there are some upscale restaurants and fancy boutiques on nearby Kurfürstendamm—so prepare to make the hotel the center of your nightlife experience unless you’re willing to travel. Any other hotel features worth noting? The acclaimed bar creates liqueurs and infusions for its burlesque-inspired cocktails. Evenings, it's in full swing, with stylish locals filling up stools around the U-shaped bar or lounging in the red velvet booths. Things can get a bit rowdy on weekends, when DJs spin and the party goes on until the wee hours. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? We love the outrageous design and buzzy bar, but if you're looking for trendy options for dining and drinking nearby, book elsewhere." - Jennifer Ceaser

Such a wonderful gem in West Berlin. Staff were amazing, our rooms were both beautiful, bar was delightful. Elegant, well priced for the value and truly a special spot! We will definitely be coming back. Thank you!

The hotel made an interesting and atmospheric impression. The first impression was quite pleasant. However, upon check-in, the reception staff did not seem very welcoming: my request to change the room was met with a rather strange reaction. In the end, the room was changed, which I appreciate. The reason for my request was the persistent smell of cigarettes in the room. I was a bit surprised that the staff did not seem to realize that such a smell can linger for days. This somewhat spoiled the impression of hospitality. As for cleanliness, there is definitely room for improvement: there was a lot of dust, the mirrors were not completely clean, and the blanket was simply wrapped in two sheets instead of a duvet cover. On the positive side, breakfast was delightful — tasty, beautifully presented, with attentive and friendly service. The restaurant itself is very cozy. I also enjoyed the small garden courtyard, a wonderful and atmospheric spot to sit with a cup of coffee. Overall, the hotel left a good impression. An additional advantage is the proximity to the metro (just a 2-minute walk) and a convenient location — about 6 km from the city center.

Don’t accept “room” 309 as it’s not a room but more like a broom closet (2.6m x 3m) and they should not even be offering this to any hotel guest.|Light switches don’t work or at random which makes it even more challenging finding your way in what is a to dark hotel. Always stayed at the Sir Savigny where they had it right, here they have it wrong |Staff is very friendly but that doesn’t compensate for a failed hotel design

Google
It was an interesting hotel - the rooms were stylish and there was a funky video art piece that you can turn on. Spotlessly clean. My only issue with the room was with the bathroom sink, which was automated like a public restroom. It made it difficult to control water flow and temperature. I didn't interact with the staff much, but when I did they didn't impress me. I reported that the in room coffee maker didn't work, but they made no attempt to fix it. The location was off the beaten path - a quiet neighborhood with not much around it. Fortunately the U-Bahn (subway) was right across the street and you can get anywhere on Berlin's public transportation. So I didn't mind it too much. Overall, I had an enjoyable stay but perhaps would chose something more central next time.

Check-in was slow and we had to wait for 30 minutes to get to the room, because I suspect that their system doesn't allow check-in even a minute before 15:00, but they tried to hide this by saying the front desk is so busy that we have to wait a while because of it. ||In the lobby we had to listen to the loud conversations of two receptionists and they should tone it down for the convenience of their guests. The staff were nice, but it's apparent that they haven't had much formal training that you would expect at four stars, so the interactions were a bit odd for this kind of hotel.||Nobody answered the phone when I tried to call the reception from room for 10 minutes and had to walk down.||We had asked for a red room weeks in advance, but were still given a blue one. I learnt that most of the rooms are blue, and they have very few red ones. ||Luckily the receptionist man was able to change us to a red room with an upgrade and we are thankful of this. This was the only positive thing in about this hotel in addition to the room decor.||||The rooms looked very stylish and unique and I loved the red velvet look of the room.||The entrance also looks glamorous. ||Unfortunately the whole lobby is decorated in blue, whereas it would look much better in red.||There is a lobby bar that plays a lot of loud music during Friday and Saturday evenings, so staying on the 1st floor during weekends is not recommended. Luckily the noise didn't reach the 4th floor rooms at all.||An awful smell of cigarettes lingered in the entrance hall and the lift.||Cleanliness of the room was otherwise good, except for the cleaning of windowsill in our room that wasn't sufficient; they hadn't been wiped for ages and there was one dead and one alive bug on top of it.||||The breakfast was very underwhelming, poor value for money and not recommendable at all; just an a la carte, where you can have one coffee, one juice and just one dish from the menu for 20 euros. Often at hotel breakfast you either can choose multiple items from the breakfast menu to your liking or it is a buffet, but not here. ||In addition, we had been told by the receptionist that since the breakfast was not included in our booking, we could just walk to the restaurant in the morning and have it for 20 euros per person if we choose to have it. But then the waiter at restaurant told us that since we hadn't booked the breakfast earlier and we didn't first pay the 20€ to the reception before walking to the restaurant in the morning, that we should just pay 5€ for coffee, 5€ for Juice and 13€ for one dish separately. Then I explained that that we had been told differently by the receptionist and the waiter finally agreed on the coffee+juice+one dish breakfast for 20€.||||The lift was very small, inconvenient and very slow. It was always occupied and you had to wait for it to arrive for a long time. Even when it was not occupied, you have to walk up and down the stairs, because it's just stuck somewhere and arrives very slowly. The cleaners should have a cleaning cart on every floor, so they don't have to occupy the lift with moving their cart during the busiest checkout hours. Or do they do this on purpose? The staff member man accompanying the cleaner was visibly laughing at us when we had been waiting for so long on the 4th floor with our bags, when they were jamming the lift with their cart. The checkout took 30 minutes because of waiting for the lift so long!||||Location could haven been better; while its next to a U-Bahn station, there is a 15 minutes walk to the closest S-Bahn station and a 10 minute walk to the beginning of Kurfürstendamstraße shopping street filled with shops and cafes.

Google
Great vibe and staff very friendly and caring. Unfortunately the elevator wasn't working and we had no hot water. There wasn't any announcement of the water issue since its acknowledgement the morning of our arrival and we were permitted to check in. Flying in from overseas and not having the ability to shower was uncomfortable. And I found this out after I had prepared myself to shower. As mentioned the staff are all kind and they arranged for me to make a lateral move to their sister hotel.

Google
Cool concept and unique style, but the place feels dated. Our room was very dusty on arrival. Later, breakfast was charged to our bill even though we hadn’t taken it. Only after repeated follow-ups by phone and email was the charge removed, with no apology given.

Google
Poor communication – a bitter aftertaste. We booked a rate with breakfast included and had breakfast delivered to our room, which normally costs an extra fee, but would have been perfectly acceptable. BUT: The full room service breakfast was charged extra. When I pointed out that they couldn't simply charge twice and that there was never any notice of this, the response was: Nothing at all. Very poor style, which unfortunately dampened our enjoyment. I wouldn't book the hotel again and can't recommend it.

Yelp
Lovely stay with great ambiance. A hidden gem if you ask me. Bar area is super chill and the outdoor patio is very nice. Stella greeted us with friendly service and made sure we had everything we needed: she made great recommendations for things to do in the city. The room was stunning and very well appointed and the heated floor in the bathroom was appreciated. The old-school elevator was very neat and added to the charm. Wish we could have stayed longer! We chose the standard room but I know they have larger rooms available too.
