The Mermaid Inn

We had a wonderful family dinner at The Mermaid over the August bank holiday weekend. Kimberley kindly squeezed us in with a last-minute booking, and all the staff were fantastic – friendly, attentive, and brilliant with our 5-year-old son. The food was absolutely perfect. I had half a lobster in garlic butter with fresh salad and chips – so delicious I cleared the plate, which is rare for me! My husband chose the chicken burger, and while we didn’t expect anything remarkable (a chicken burger is usually just a chicken burger), this one was definitely something special. The hash brown and the rich gravy on the side made it a real winner. We left very happy and would thoroughly recommend The Mermaid for dinner. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we’re already booked to return tomorrow night. Thanks to the whole team for such a lovely experience!

This is a beautiful pub/resturant that over looks the harbour. The food was a mix of opinions - the moules mariniére being some of the best, the scampi’s being described as average. The fish of the day was delicious. Service was ok. The pub was not as busy as it can be. Lovely pub downstairs. Toilets are down some steep stairs into the basement. Resturant is up a few steps. Recommended booking the resturant before your holiday.

Great food at the mermaid. Great service with Dan and the rest of the team. Very imaginative menu. The half lobster was very good. Great puddings as well. Definitely recommend.

Got seated at our table and waited 25 minutes before our order was taken. Preference seemed to be given to a 'staff member' and his cronies who came in 15 minutes after us. Our starter arrived after 45 minutes. It was ok. I ordered the sirloin steak, medium to well done. I think the chef need to learn to cook steaks as it was definitely not medium/well. The quality of the steak was awful. Fatty, gristly and stringy. In fact, more was left on the plate than what was eaten. When this was mentioned we just got told, 'ill tell the kitchen'. Not good customer service at all. The Mermaid always used to be the place to go ro for food but id say its the place to avoid.

Sunday Roast, generous portions, roasties really crispy but fluffy inside, 7 different veggies, including cauliflower cheese, pork belly was tasty. myself and the hubby didn't talk except to compliment the meal at it was yummy. the front of house was on her own and was exceptional. Great view of the harbour as well.

On the Quay. Two bars and a restaurant. I think there are also some rooms. Reasonable choice of beers, food was large portions. I found it a little unwelcoming

Unfortunately we had anticipated an enjoyable evening with good food but we waited well over an hour for our starter of bread and olives and oil. Non of which was of a good quality. Our main courses were on the verge of being sent back to the kitchen as everything was overcooked apart from the fish pie. We were all disappointed as the food was not cheap. Would have been better served at the fish and chip takeaway!

Nice friendly restaurant overlooking the harbour. Usual menu plus a Specials Board.

Yelp
As my friend group and I all turned 30 this year, we decided to celebrate with a group holiday to the Scilly isles. To save on funds we camped, meaning we mostly cooked our own meals and ate under the stars. We did decide that we would treat ourselves to a cosy pub meal a couple of times during the holiday and I'm very pleased that the Mermaid Inn was one of the chosen destinations. As we were a large group (12 plus a dog) we were provided with a large table in the Slip Inn bar and much to our surprise, we had the bar to ourselves! The food was incredibly good, lots of local seafood with some fresh caught specials as well as some fashionable favourites (such as crab mac and cheese!), the portions were good, I could have done with a little more but then I am quite greedy. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. My only criticism is something that is to be expected on the Scilly isles so I debated whether or not to put this in my review or not, but it does need saying: The prices. The Scillys are not cheap, so I was not expecting the food to be cheap. However there was not a main course that was under £10.95, with most being around £15-£20, even starters cost up to £9.95 (averaging ~£7) If you are on a budget you will be limited to sandwiches or salads so won't get a chance to appreciate the fantastic local seafood. I have included this criticism as I do feel the Mermaid Inn could perhaps offer some smaller versions of their mains with salad or bread etc to allow people to try the food without spending a fortune (the mac and cheese mentioned above is £16.50, perhaps £11 with some of the dish replaced with bread would be a good option for those on a budget). Having said that, we did not visit for breakfast and the eggs Benedict etc did look reasonably priced. Overall I do recommend eating here, but perhaps like us you'll have to include it as a one off expensive treat and spend the rest of the week with camp-side rations!

Yelp
Love it here. Very relaxed and easy-going. Gets lively in the evenings, is popular with almost everyone. Good selection of drinks, the Pinot Grigio is recommended! Also does good food. Good selection. I had a very nice Chicken Sizzler.

Yelp
Closest pub to the quay. A few different areas to check out if you can get pass the massive dog that sleeps on the step all the time. The main bar area is a great lively place with all the locals in there which means it must be the place to be. There is then another area downstairs we had lunch in. The food was brilliant and reasonably priced for what you get. The biggest impression was made by the main restaurant area. The food was simply stunning and the portions massive. All 5 people were blown away by how nice the meal was. Definitely the best food we had on the island. A MUST!
