Gravelly Point

This is one of the best outdoor spots in the DMV. Gravelly Point is truly unique — where else can you lay out a picnic while commercial jets roar overhead, just a few hundred feet above? It never gets old. It’s a fantastic place for families, aviation enthusiasts, bikers, joggers, or anyone who just wants to relax by the river. I usually bike in on the Mount Vernon Trail or drive — just be aware the lot fills up fast on weekends. The plane noise is intense (and honestly, awesome), but might be a bit much for young kids — ear protection is a smart move. Bring a blanket or some chairs and enjoy the show. Only real downside: the restroom situation. Just porta-potties, and they’re inconsistent at best. Still worth it for the experience. ✅ Free parking ✅ Best plane-spotting experience around ✅ Open fields + incredible views of the D.C. skyline ❌ Only portable restrooms ❌ Weekend crowds can get heavy Highly recommend. This is my son’s favorite place in the entire world. The plans come often and it’s an amazing view especially if they are landing. We take everyone not form Here out here especially during this time of the year. When they’re taking off, we get a spot near the water, feed the ducks and run as the planes take off overheard. It’s the perfect way to spend an evening and my son makes sure we spend an evening here at least 2/4 times a week. You can do almost anything you want here except fly a kite. We fully plan on having his birthday party here in the fall.

What a beautiful place to watch the planes land and take off from Reagan national airport. It is especially nice during sunset hours but It does get very crowded here. There are porta potties nearby If you really have to go. You can see the Washington monument and capital from here.

I normally drive here on my way home but decided walk instead via Mount Vernon trail in Crystal City. It took about 25 minutes. Just be mindful of the bike riders. Stay as far to the right so, you don't get run over because people will be riding fast!

Gravelly point Arlington, VA 22202, USA - a cool and safe place to watch planes take off and land in the nearby Reagan Airport, almost one plane lands every minute. The thrill and excitement of aircrafts roaring overhead raise goosebumps!! The park provides scenic views of the Potomac River with a nice view of the Washington monument and D.C. skyline. Boating also available - Perfect park for airplane enthusiasts. Kids will enjoy. If your pets are comfortable with loud, harsh sounds, then u can bring them also. On crowded days, parking is a bit difficult. Portable toilets are not clean.(horrible) Suitable for walking, running & cycling, a few food trucks and a great biking path. If it rains, there is no shelter. If u r coming for DC Cherry blossom, don't miss this place!!

This is a great spot for plane spotting at Regan airport. On the day of our visit, the planes were landing over Gravelly Point. The kids loved this! There is a paved walking trail, port a potty’s and a ton of space to hang out. The Potomac river is also there to walk down to the water. Such a great park!

Gorgeous field with such a unique view of overhead airplanes from DCA and the Washington Monument. We decided to visit this place for 4th of July, and had a fantastic view of the fireworks from all angles. A bit inconvenient to get to by Metro, but the nice simple landscape to set down a picnic blanket and take in the views makes up for it.

An awesome park that is wrapped by the Mt. Vernon trail. Plenty of people flock here to watch as planes come in and out of DCA up close. Super unique spot.

One of the most fun places in the district. Perfect for a picnic date, hang with friends, or a gathering with family! Beautiful and thrilling views of planes taking off and landing alongside the gorgeous waterfront. Occasional food truck options but it's best to pack some snacks just in case! Bring a picnic blanket and some games for the ultimate afternoon.

Wow this place is a hidden gem! It's the perfect spot to come and relax read a book or have a picnic. I skimmed through the other reviews and yes parking is a bit of a hassle and the bathrooms are not very clean. However the park itself is a beautiful place to enjoy.

CALLING ALL PLANE ENTHUSIASTS, this is one of my favorite spots to plane watch, super easy and open with a beautiful view. If you come on a day when the planes are landing over the park, rather than taking off, they get sooo close. It's obviously not the huge planes like Dulles has, but I really like seeing the 737s so close. My friend and i came here because i wanted to wallow about life a little and it set the vibes perfectly because it was so peaceful and life altering a little.

A hop, skip, and a jump away (no pun intended) from Reagan National Airport, this cozy park is a great little picnic spot to enjoy an unobstructed view of the Washington Monument, stare across the Potomac at the DC cityscape, or lie on top of a car while pondering life's most important questions while planes take off or land right over your head with the swell of the engines humming along. Best to hurry on over and enjoy this park before the government shuts it down. It might happen...yeah, and monkeys may fly out of my butt.

This is a neat park to visit. Parking is a bit difficult but if you drive around enough you will find one eventually. The park is clean and it is neat seeing the planes take off up close. Water views are great.

Such a cute date night spot! Bring dinner, a book, a large blanket, and your significant other and watch the planes land during the sunset!

It's a nice park; however, I came here to say that Kite flying is not permitted here. It is dangerous and should not be attempted.

This is one of those hidden gems in the DMV. My family been coming here since we moved here from Florida. This would be a nice gathering place for family and friends, watching planes land and take off. Bathrooms are Porta pottys and I don't recommend. Dirty dirty. Plan a picnic, and come here on a nice sunny day. Plenty of parking. A few over priced food trucks. Bring bug spray and enjoy the scenery. Watch out for speed cams on 395.

This park gives you a unique view of airplanes taking off and landing at Reagan Washington National Airport. Airplanes pass between 100 and 200 feet over you. With that being said, the park can get packed. There are people there with grills, blankets, music....It gets a little wild. There is a free parking lot, but that was full when I was there, with cars parked all over the grass. They had a few food trucks out there while I was there, but the lines were extremely long. The Mount Vernon Trail runs right along the outskirts of the park. The park does not look well maintained. It is very dirty. There is trash all over the place and the trash cans are over flowing big time. However, that does not seem to have an impact on visitors. Obviously the park is not too peaceful with all the jet engines going on and the visitors are not the most quiet either. It is somewhat chaos when I was there. Outside of seeing the planes land and take of and bordering the Potomac River, which is all awesome, the park is a huge empty field (minus all the people over it).

Me and my son enjoyed our time here! Great impromptu picnic! Lots of field to camp out! Lots of families enjoying quality time. They did have some ice cream trucks there too!

Honestly, it so amazing to live in DMV Area. Being able to go to places like Gravelly point is amazing. I have been there a few times on multiple occasions such as for a picnic, a casual Date, or just for fun and it never gets old. Something about just lying there as planes fly over and with everyone else around you playing frisbee, running around and etc creates a fun vibe around you. If you haven't gone already you sincerely need to cause you are MISSING OUT!! Best of all it's free so you can't go wrong. Stop reading this and go!:)

If you're into aircraft then this is the place for you. Lots of DCA traffic overhead. Cool spot!!

If you or your dependents are obsessed with airplanes, this park is the best place to see and hear incoming and outgoing airplanes just 700 feet from the airport bordering the Potomac River. There is lots of space to run and play, have a picnic, and take photos. There is an abundance of parking right there, making the park and trails accessible to all mobilities. There are quite a few picnic tables available, plenty of trash cans, and port-o-potties. The space is very clean other than a bit of exposed rocky areas but those are easily avoidable.

This is a lovely park, right off of the GW Parkway. Next to Reagan Airport, you can get close up pictures of planes taking off or landing. It's fun to put broadcastify on your phone, and listen to the tower and pilots. Thank goodness this has been kept open. Most of the time you'll find a parking spot easily. The park area offers plane spotting, and fishing opportunities on the Potomac. Your choice, but I catch and release. There's a soccer field, and also a trail that's good for biking and hiking. This is a US Park, and admission is free. It's a family friendly place. Have been going here for years.

Super cool place to see planes land and take off. When I went there was plenty of parking and lots of people out hanging out. The Mount Vernon Trail runs through the park. There's picnic tables and a soccer goal. I had no problem getting in and out of the park. I mainly went to see the planes and the kids really enjoyed it!

[Coronavirus review] Gravelly Point is a unique local flavor kind of place; the main reason people go is to watch planes take off as it's about as close as you can get, but there are big grassy areas and cross-river views of the touristy part of DC. Notably, in the present locked-down circumstance this is also about as close as you can get to our famous cherry blossoms (at least, the big concentration of them downtown; there are trees all over the city). There is a parking lot, which is only accessible from the Northbound lanes. It's a bit of a hike from the airport Metro stop, or just a convenient point for those on the Mount Vernon Trail to rest and soak in some views on the water.

If you're looking for a cute little adventure for the weekend, with friends, family, or your dog, consider Gravelly Point!! A large outdoor area located next to the DCA airport, that has several walking/biking/running trails. Lots of grass and trees scattered all around; perfect place for you to bring a blanket and food to have a little picnic as you watch the planes fly right over head. The only downfall, you will hit traffic on the way, no matter what time of day it is, due to proximity to the airport. Also, parking is always a nightmare. You will find a spot (in the grass), but it may take a few (or several) minutes.

Gravelly Point is essentially a park where you can watch planes land. It's cooler than it sounds! They fly in right over your head and you feel like you can almost touch the planes, they're THAT close. There were a lot of parents with little boys who were just thrilled to witness planes in real life and it was super cute. There's about five picnic tables that were all full when we got there, so I'd definitely recommend bringing a blanket (it's an uneven, scratchy ground) or folding chairs. Several people had picnics too. Planes were landing almost every minute which I was surprised about-- constant entertainment. I heard that it always rotates whether the planes are taking out or landing and I think the landing days are the coolest to observe. Enjoy!

Today was my first time here and I absolutely LOVED IT!! The views are amazing and the sight of planes taking off and landing is amazing!! We will be going back in the fall or whenever we don't have any plans.

A very different take on an interesting park. If you don't mind the noise sitting here having lunch is a fantastic way to spend the day. You have a view of the US capital building the Washington monument, and the airplanes are a mere 50 feet above your head as they land at DCA.

Gravelly Point is a great park for several reasons: 1) Airplane watching: It's right next to where the planes take off from National Reagan Airport. There are picnic tables conveniently located so you can have a picnic and watch the closest you'll get to the airplanes. Planes take off every few minutes and it is loud, but kids and adults love it. This also makes for great photography. 2) Parking: There's plenty of it and it's free! 3) Location: It's close to Crystal City in Arlington, VA and just off the highway going into DC. It's easy to get anywhere from Gravelly Point. The only downside is there aren't any actual playgrounds for kids, just open grass. It's great for picnics, but prep your toddler that it's a park without a playground.

This is for all the tourists who go to the DMV area. Gravelly point is a great spot to go to when the weather is nice. Its very easy to see the planes that fly into DCA and it's a super popular picnic spot. For my fellas, highly recommend planning a picnic date here for you and your lady during the spring time. Show her a good time like the movies. For my ladies, drop some hints for your man to take you here to enjoy the sun and the fun vibe. You won't regret it and if he not taking you here then you should reconsider him because he obviously doesn't enjoy happiness. All jokes aside, this is a great place for a casual date or a family outing on a nice weather day in spring!

Great place to go to watch the planes coming in for landing at National. Especially in these COVID times when there aren't a lot of other places to go, this is one open, outdoor space for fresh air that seems to be relatively uncrowded. Air travel seems to be picking up as on a weekday the planes are coming in at almost normal 1-2 minute intervals. Easy to get to in a car - there is plenty of free parking - and also accessible on the bike trail.

This is the perfect spot to spend an entire afternoon. Located just off the grounds of DCA airport, this little patch of land is ideal for social distancing while watching planes arrive and take off. The parking is free which is a huge plus in DC but you have to be willing to do a little off-roading since there are curbs you have to climb. Most of the time folks with trucks and SUVs will take those spots and leave the flat spots for us sedan drivers. If you come in the summer time it is extremely crowded but people tend to be respectful of your space. The reason I cannot give this place a perfect five stars is because the last two times I've gone there have been overflowing trash cans all over the park. I'm not sure what the protocol is for trash removal (maybe once every few hours) but it is clearly not enough. Once the trash cans overflow you get people who just dump their picnic remains on the floor causing birds to flock in for a mid-day snack. Since I have a two year old I was constantly having to run after him to make sure he wasn't picking up someone's old soda can or candy wrapper. Perhaps the lack of trash management is a COVID related problem since I've never experienced this before so I'll likely update this review in a few months. Fun Fact: I proposed to my wife here in 2016 :D

July 2020 - COVID Review: Great place especially during COVID to be able to go and socially distance outdoors! Great for bringing your own food for a picnic. It's right along the river and you get to see all the planes landing (which can often get pretty loud). Parking can get packed depending on the time and day of the week that you go. But it's so nice that everything is free!

Early morning drop off at DCA called for me to find something to do! Looked up "best place to watch planes at DCA" and it lead me to this majestic spot. I was able to enjoy the sunrise and watch the planes take off/land. Very calm vibe, especially so close to the city.

Love this place We picnicked for a little & walked our dog. Love seeing the airplanes fly over us. Idk how it is during summer. This was during spring I believe so I'm not sure if the grass is cut during summer. Yes that's something I look at in parks lol

Gravelly Point is probably one of the coolest parks I've ever been to. From the grassy area, you can see the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building. We came during sunset and the views were amazing. Everyone gets excited when a plane approaches and they fly so low that it feels like you can touch it. Bring a camera as you can get some really cool photos and videos. I'd also recommend bringing either a lawn chair or a blanket and have a picnic in the park. You get great views in a peaceful, riverfront park. I also learned you can take Mount Vernon trail and bike here along the way to the other spots. Pet friendly too. Caution: Since the planes fly low to land at Reagan, keep in mind they are very loud when approaching.

Why is this beautiful place soooo unkept. Trash is everywhere!! Who is responsible for keeping this place clean besides the obvious. If you visit stop leaving your trash on grass or parking lot please

I absolutely love this place! It is a great place to spend with yourself, your loved one, family members, dogs, and others! There is a lot of space, so you do not feel as though you are too close to someone else (unless you choose or someone else choses to be close to each other). Two things that I like the most about Gravelly Point are the planes when they come in really low for landing and the food and/or ice cream truck that are there! Food an entertainment in one area! Oh and did I mention that they have trails that lead to D.C. and across the bridge in VA?!

So what it's literally freezing outside, grab a heavy blanket, wrap yourself up in it, with your coat on and all!!!! Here, you get one of the most invigorating experiences as you can watch the planes descending to landing a National airport. You can and sip experience so many feelings from amazement to slight fear lol because the planes are so low, it's almost as if you could super jump up and touch one. If it's dark enough out, the gift lights come which light up the experience even more. There is a walking trail that outlines the point as well as plenty of porta potties along one of the walk says if you absolutely must have to go (solid pass for me). Luckily with it being so cold out, there's not guiding smells in the air, lol. Easily accessible from right off the highway snd smoke parking, it's easy to miss is you are speeding by. Oh I must warn you, the possibility of uncontrollable laughter from a young child enjoying themselves is super contagious!

As a diehard travel enthusiast there is nothing more enjoyable than watching a jet fly over and land. There are not too many viewing points in the United States that beat Gravelly Point for up close plane viewings take offs and landings. Gravelly Point is an inlet and a small body of water separates the point from the airport. There is no charge to watch and there is parking. There are also some awesome views of Washington. Tip: A fun way to get there is via the bike trail. Sit back, bring a bottle of wine and enjoy.

This park was recommended by a colleague/friend and I am very pleased we used her recommendation. All of the reviews are spot on. In an effort to find ways to get out of the house during Covid, we decided to have a little picnic here and watch the low-flying planes. We went mid-day on a Friday, laid out a blanket, pulled out some snacks & games and relaxed. It was not super crowded, but there were several families either picnicking, riding bikes or going for a walk. However, it was definitely enough space to spread out and be away from other groups. There are also a few tables in the shade that were not all occupied. The parking is a little limited and as others have stated, if you're going on a weekend, I am sure it fills up rather quickly. If you don't absolutely need to use a table, I suggest bringing everything you need to lay out comfortably on the grass and bring a folding chair (or, more) - less hassle than trying to get a table. We will be back when the weather warms up again.

How is this place still legal? To me it would seem like in today's world of crazy things happening and with a need for almost too much security a park this close to an airport runway would have been closed up/closed off right after 9/11 permanently. Thank goodness it wasn't because damn is it cool. The review from Matthew S. is the gold standard in terms of what to expect and as to what you'll see if you come here so I'll defer to his superb write up as I can't do any better. Whether you're running/walking/biking along the Mount Vernon Trail, are using the boat launch (This is the point where the DC Duck tour exits the Potomac), are coming to picnic or mess around in the large open field, like plane spotting or you relish having a mouth full of foam from all of the nearby Amtrak/freight activity Gravelly Point has got something for everyone and is well worth a visit.

So much fun watching planes here! You need to figure out if you want to watch planes land or if you want to watch them take off though! Look up the times online. The bathrooms are horrendous/disgusting though. The port a potties looked like they hadn't been serviced in months. Sick.

Fun and free, what's not to love. Not far from the Reagan National Airport. Depending on which way the wind is blowing you get a great show of planes making that last turn (can't fly over the Pentagon, donchaknow?) to line up and land right over there. And with the DC skyline across the river! Water, grass, picnic benches. Lovely. Gets very crowded on the sunny weekend days, but you can find a spot by hopping a curb. There is no organized food or drink here, but you might find some enterprising soul with a table selling soda and bottled water out of a cooler.

This park wasn't created for plane watching but seems to have become popular for it. I haven't been back to this park in four years and I'm glad to see that it's still the same with the exception that Its definitely gotten more popular as parking is now very hard to find. Good secluded spots away from everyone to see the planes take off and land are few and far between. There are parking signs that say you can't park on the grass and that only oversized loads are allowed but everyone parks on it anyway. Planes are plentiful, landing every five minutes or so and still hold the same flight path close to the park. If you've watched long enough like one of my local DC friends you may catch a landing boo boo. He's seen a plane abort a landing and pull right back up into the sky. When planes are taking off above the park it's thrilling to stand under the path, it feels like the plane may hit you if it doesn't keep on climbing. If planes are not your thing, this is a great summer time park for family BBQ's and picnics, biking and jogging.

Gravelly Point Park is located on the Mt. Vernon Trail. So you have a lot of walkers, runners, cyclists passing through. It is also a prime location to watch the airplanes land and take-off since its located next to National Airport. People picnic here, take pictures, gathering point to take in nature, view of the Potomac and just relax. Kickball leagues also gather here, so parking can become hectic if they're playing. I recommend parking at Crystal City near the Water Park, and walking to Gravelly Point from there. The distance is 1 mile, but its a nice walk on the paved trail. Absolutely a great place to have a picnic, take in the views and watch the planes.

If you like planes and airports, this is a great place to go. It is right next to the runway of Regan airport and depending on wind direction that day, the planes are either taking off or landing right above you. I think that being there when they are landing over you is better since you can watch them slowly descend and touchdown. It may also be a matter of preference. Try going on a clear day and a weekday for maximum viewing and less crowds. There is a big open park area to throw a ball, fly a kite, or have a picnic. There is also an area closer to the airport with a boat launch and small grass area, although watch out for the geese poop here and the cars.

Very cute park for a picnic. It is cool to see the planes fly over you! I suggest going by car or Uber because by metro it's a nightmare. There is food trucks also if you didn't bring food.

This is a GREAT spot to watch the planes take off. You can't get any better than this. There's a little opening in the trees with rocks to sit on for an optimal view of the planes but it's a small area. So we didn't stay there long and walked to the large grassy area. It's right near the river and there's plenty of space to have a picnic, let kids run around, ride bikes and all of that. They even have some port-a-pottys. There is a parking lot, but parking is limited. We ended up parking on the grass but there were tons of other cars who did that as well. I would have given 5 stars but I think they could have made the parking lot with more spaces. Also, adding some benches would be nice. Overall if you live in the area and are looking for a space to have a date or just spend some outdoor time with your family I think people if all ages would enjoy this.

I'm going to do more justice to my review this time around, being here several times now, and each time is always a joy. Gravelly Point is a fantastic park right off the George Washington Parkway, only minutes from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), and its not even a terrible walk from the metro stop either. With that said, it is an amazing place to watch planes, play a pickup game of soccer or football, or get some exercise as the Mount Vernon trail runs through the park. The park is absolutely gorgeous as it sits along a basin of the Potomac River. From there, you can see planes taking the famous, but strict "River Visual" approach. This is for all aircraft landing into DCA from the north. In other words, when an aircraft is 10-12 miles outside the airport, aircraft on final approach must follow the river to the airport, with a sharp bank over the park before touching down on runway 19. Smaller aircraft can use runways 15 or 22. Planes landing from the south use the "Mount Vernon Visual", where the aircraft fly over Alexandria using a similar approach except they use runways 1, 33, or 4. For you planespotters out there, especially the novice ones, you'll never find anything larger than a Boeing 757 or an MD-80 landing here. That's largely because the runways are too short, and there's a noise abatement that the planes must follow in ordinances with the counties. Additionally, most flights are domestic (although a handful of flights now fly into Canada). There's also roughly 800-1100 flights daily into and out of the airport. That's just the big highlight. The park is technically always open to the public, except after 10 pm the police come by to close the parking lot to vehicular traffic. But it opens daily at 6 am, usually around the time the first outbound planes get ready for takeoff. I would get here early, as parking fills up fast, especially on weekends during the summer. The experience at the park makes for a great day, and you should try and make as much of it as you can. It's an experience you'll want to repeat over and over again. That's why I go back, and hopefully when you go, you'll want to as well.

actual paradise for a plane nerd. great place to plane spot and have a picnic and stuff. only reason i'm giving 4 stars is because half the park is smelly from the portapottys in the parking lot. other wise it was a great place to see some planes including (but not limited to) a320s, a321s, a319s, 737s, crj9s, and crj7s.

After going plane spotting a few times. I finally started recording planes and its a lot of fun. I come here pretty often now. Just pick a spot to just stand at and start recording. The planes are really cool too watch and they get really low which makes for great picture.

Pretty neat place to check out the planes landing at Reagan. There is a bike/running trail through the park right along the water, ample parking, several picnic tables, a bunch of port-a-potties and a football field, but I think the real draw is it's proximity to the airport. It's a neat place to take pics, bring kids or just be airplane enthusiasts for a bit.

Love it. What there is not to love? Beautiful things above and around. Watch the plans getting closer, there is something about it that hypnotize you. I stayed for couple hours, but felt I can stay forever. Just lay in your back and watch the sky. Also we got here early so there were no parking issues. If you like air plains you just need to check out Gravelly Point. You will love it.
