My friend cringes at the possibility of a night out a Gloucester Park; "But so many bogans go to the races", she soulfully protests.
Yes, this is true. It is also true that Gloucester Park is a bloody top night out. I enjoy a crowd with the occasional sprinkling of mullet and rat's tail anyway. It all adds to the atmosphere, as far as I'm concerned.
I was at Gloucester Park last night to celebrate Chinese New Year, something that is becoming a bit of a tradition for me and a few friends. It set us back a few bob each but was well worth it.
The entry free is $20 (there are concession prices for students and pensioners) and we all had a bit of a flutter. My usual horse racing fiasco occurred. I have no idea about the technicalities of which horse to choose. My betting strategy involves putting money on the filly with the name that resonates most strongly and profoundly with me. Phlying Pharoah, how could you possibly disappoint?
Often times my horse miraculously canes it for the first two laps and I think, joy of joys, I've fluked a winner! I take this as a symbol from above that my luck in general is swiftly turning around for the better. My pretty pony then proceeds to lag behind and comes somewhere around dead last.
It is fun to have a flutter though and a brightly light trotting track has a much more appealing atmosphere than any dreary, depressing casino.
There were a number of stalls around to aid in the celebration of Chinese New Year. It was great fun perusing the pleasing delights from the Far East. I love the bright pink and green jelly/junket type dessert. Next time I will definitely try it.
Miss Chinese WA added extra shimmer and sparkle to the night. The idea of a beauty pageant being taken seriously in this day and age is so far out it's almost in.
The fireworks and dancing dragons were spectacular. When smiles abound upon leaving a venue a good night has been had by all.
Thanks to Gloucester Park and the dancing dragons for making Chinese New Year, once again, a memorable and joy inducing night.
