Faulhorn

Beautiful hike of medium difficulty, along two lakes that are perfect for taking a quick refreshing dip. Cows & if you’re lucky even groundhogs can be spotted. After refueling at the mountain restaurant (the Rösti are delicious!), it’s just a few more steps to the peak of the Faulhorn. The view from there is stunning: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau on one side, on the other lake Brienz and lake Thun. If you go in September and stay close to the final gondola at 18h, you’ll catch the golden hour, which makes the landscape even more spectacular. If ever in Grindelwald, I’d recommend not just sticking to the traditional Jungfrau visit - go up to First by gondola and then hike here. Even if you don’t make it all the way to the top, the views are so worth it.

Amazing views from the top of Faulhorn! The restaurant at the top is the perfect place to refuel. I did this as a pit stop on a hike from Schynige Platte to First. Last gondola down from First leaves at 6, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time. You’ll definitely want to stop and take photos. In late September, expect that the trails will be a bit snowy.

The most beautiful hike. It’s only another hour from Bachalpsee with varied incline. Definitely worth going to! Just be mindful that the final gondola down to Grindelwald from First is 6PM. If overnight stay is needed, there’s a hotel on top of Faulhorn (prebook this, it’s not available last minute) or there’s a hiker’s lodging/hostel beside the First gondola. Tips for this hike: beware of Swiss cows and their bells. They’re everywhere and incredibly majestic. Also, pay attention to your footing. The gravel even in the flatter areas of the hike can be sharp.

Stayed at Faulhorn Hostel for one night mid September 2023 and enjoyed dinner at the summit restaurant. Reservations are required in advance. It's roughly a 3 mile steep hike in from the summit of First and roughly an hour past the quaint and scenic Bachsee lakes which are crystal clear. The climb in is rough after the Bachsee lakes so I recommend some experience hiking and with steep inclines. It is a road ... traveled by bikes and farm trucks and cows/ducks. Also I saw several marmots tending their area and ignoring me which is how it should be. Unbelievable views throughout. Make sure you get outside to view the stars at night if you have a clear sky, they are so close it felt like you could reach out and touch them.

A dust of snow was covered the trails, but it was still easy to walk without crampons. Bring hiking sticks with you. It is absolutely worth it to check! One of the best Switzerland trails you can experience and also it is not too demanding by novices as well. Those pics were taken on 17. Sept 2017. Have a pleasant trip!

We stopped here for lunch while on our hike from Schynige Platte to First. It was super packed on a summer weekday and we had to wait a little to get a table. The view is awesome. The food is pretty standard for mountain huts. We were served very promptly. Would have been a much better experience if it wasn’t so crowded and noisy.

A fairly easy hike to a quaint village to the top of Faulhorn. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking as you get to look down to Interlaken and the Brienzersee lake! In the winter, climbing up and be a bit of a challenge as the path is covered entirely in ankle deep (or deeper) snow. If you've got the strength and endurance, do bring along a sledge in winter so you can experience the longest and most scenic sledge run in the world!

Ventured to the Faulhorn on the winter walk from First to Bussalp. Struggled to the top to find that the hotel isn't open during the winter months - could have done with a hot chocolate!! Quite an amazing place with fine views.
