I was initially excited to try Figure 8 since I've heard good things about it online. However, I'm not sure if it's what we ordered or if the food is truly just mediocre, but what we ordered definitely wasn't worth what we paid in terms of quality or quantity.
Collard Greens - $18 for a small bowl, smaller than an average hand. The seasoning was WAY too salty, and we had about two pieces of pork (maybe a third of a pinky size each) in our dish. This was totally disappointing and I saw previous reviews saying that the portion was good at a price point of $8, but clearly something has changed over the last few months. The collard greens were also bitter and it seemed like they tried to use the saltiness of the sauce to hide that fact. Hong Shao pork is a dish my mom made often at home so I'm very familiar with how it should taste, but this is a far cry from it.
Mini Lobster Toast - $26 two pieces of toast and maybe 6 pieces of lobster total, this was actually our most liked dish of the night. The way it was advertised in the menu was 1000x more appealing than it turned out to be in reality. The toast was your average white bread, nothing like the milk toast they described, and it was soggy through the middle. Flavor wise, it was fine, but nothing remarkable. And at the $26 price point for two pieces, you're pretty much getting scammed at this point.
Endive Salad - $23 Also really disappointing dish. The salted egg really lacked flavor and you couldn't really tell if it added anything to the dish. This was just okay, nothing special.
Carolina Sling - $21 sweet drink, pretty well balanced. But at the $21 price point this is way more expensive than similar bars in the neighborhood or even comparable restaurants like Red Sorghum or Ye's Apothecary, who have more creative cocktails for cheaper.
Summer in Shanghai - $23 surprisingly bitter/more of a clean drink that's categorized under sweet drinks. It's pretty good and presentation is fun, but again you can get better for cheaper elsewhere.
Service was good, our waiter was attentive and friendly. The food, however, was truly lacking for a restaurant that heavily advertises how good its fusion is. At the end of the meal, we really felt robbed after spending about $72 per person. Ended up finishing our dinner elsewhere.
