Events and Festivals in Miami

"Art Basel is about art as much as Super Bowl Sunday is about a football game. Yes, there is a humongous art fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center where artists, dealers, and collectors converge to make six-and-seven figure transactions. They account for about one percent of the people who come to town for Art Basel, a full weekend of high society parties, jam-packed clubs, and trippy art installations all over the city. It’s a great weekend to see some of the best art in the world or to just see how many parties you can get on the list for. When: First weekend in December" - MATADOR_NETWORK

"After being cancelled last year, Art Basel is back in a new hybrid form, with digital and IRL editions welcoming 272 galleries from around the world. The Messeplatz will have site-specific interventions by Argentina-born Cecilia Bengolea, who is staging a video and performance work in its fountain, as well as Britain’s Monster Chetwynd, whose Salvador Dalí-inspired work involves dancers in giant balloons."

The OG art fair and the best destination to witness and gain access first-hand high art and art dealing with top galleries coming from around the world. The Unlimited section featuring large-scale installations and sculptures is truly a unique place to give room for the visitors to experience and interact with the highly curated statement pieces.

Art Basel is iconic—and yes, the art’s incredible—but be ready for crowds (even during VIP days), overpriced coffee, and surprisingly mediocre food. You’d think an event for successful artists collectors and curators would serve better espresso, but alas… Still worth the trip. More behind-the-scenes on IG: @rosieding_

Absolutely loved the exhibition, the audioguide was accessible via QR code for nearly all pieces and really helped understand the art on a deeper level.

If you’re a buyer, I’m sure it’s phenomenal. Its main function is offering a commercial opportunity to the industry. I was expecting a curated experience, not a ‘world class art market’. For example, I asked for a list of exhibiting artists in alphabetical order and was told… no, we don’t do that, everything is categorised according to gallery/collector/collection, ie who owns/is selling what. Owners, not artists. Of course lots of the artworks are breathtaking and totally impressive but it can’t be compared to the Documenta. Maybe as a non-collecting art enthusiast I was expecting too much. I wanted to be introduced to next generation artists, experience the message of the works, get into eras, themes, not just say ‘wow, impressive’ (which I did). It would have helped to know this before our visit.

Today I went to SBB at 1pm to buy a ticket and the lady in charge was so disrespectful: I was just asking questions on the day pass and weekend pass .. and she was annoyed until I told her that I am the customer and I am buying the ticket with my money so I have the right to get some minimal explanations .. . what a disastrous image for art basel - she should not be in front of customers ..
