A Jewel in the Crown of Reykjavík
One does not simply arrive at The Black Pearl; one is received. Our arrival, admittedly ahead of schedule, was met not with the customary bureaucratic humdrum, but with a welcome revelation: our sanctuary was prepared. A novel concept, and one we found utterly refreshing.
The charming individual who presided over our check-in performed the entire affair with such effortless grace that it felt less like a transaction and more like an induction. She personally escorted us to our quarters, demonstrating the rather theatrical lighting system—a welcome change from the usual fumbling for switches in an unfamiliar room—and with a final, warm welcome, left us to our devices.
And what devices they were. The apartment was a masterclass in understated Nordic luxury. A haven perfectly appointed for my Queen to repose after a day of royal progress through the streets of Reykjavík. The location is, in a word, impeccable, placing the entire city at one’s well-shod feet.
The amenities spoke of a establishment that understands its clientele. Heated floors throughout—a divine indulgence against the Icelandic air. A kitchen boasting a proper gas stove and a full complement of tools, should one feel inclined to whip up a feast. The refrigerator, we noted, was temptingly stocked with wine, spirits, and decadent chocolates—all available for a princely sum, as is only right. One must maintain a sense of occasion.
The bathroom deserves its own dispatch. A zero-threshold shower of such generous proportions it could comfortably host a small cocktail party for four. All, I must reiterate, atop gloriously heated marble.
We found the living area a perfect balance of comfort and technology, with a formidable 48-inch television facing a suitably modest sofa. The true pièce de résistance, however, was the wall of floor-to-ceiling glass, leading to a spacious balcony from which to observe the world, champagne flute in hand.
Checkout was without fanfare. People working the desk did not exude the same level of care as the woman that welcomed us in.
In summary, The Black Pearl is that rarest of finds: a hotel that is both supremely sophisticated and intuitively comfortable. It is, without a doubt, the only address we shall consider upon our next visit to Reykjavík. Highly recommended.
