The accommodations here were nice, and the rooms were clean. The facilities look a little aged, but well-kept. We stayed in what was called a suite, but was more like a standard double-queen room. We left to go to the market, which was closed even after being recommended to us by the front desk, and when we returned, we had nice little treats left for the kids, due to our winter wonderland package we purchased in addition to our room cost. We left for our on-campus dinner reservations assuming we had plenty of time to continue looking around afterward since our reservations were at 7:15pm, which is where things fell apart.
The Mill Room: While the food was delicious, the rate at which each course was served was extremely slow. It took nearly 20 minutes to get drinks, which set the pace for bread, and courses, etc. Additionally, our server was not nearly as accommodating to our family as others in his seating area, stopping to make small chat and make recommendations to others and being jovial, but being curt with us, unexpectedly. It really made it a difficult service. After 2 1/2 hrs of sitting and waiting for our next portions, and a mix up with our meals because everyone had prime rib but different temperatures (and the knives were of no use in cutting as they were very dull) we finished in time to notice that the lights we paid additionally for had stopped. At no point were we made aware, nor did the "things to know" page online state that the lights attraction stopped letting visitors in at 8, closing at 9, so because of our lengthy dinner, the entire reason we came was missed. In addition, we were grossly overcharged for our meal, with each child being charged 105$ per person, though online it states 45$. When my husband alerted the staff, they stated the would correct it, but was charged around 490$ for 5 people, 2 adults and 3 kids, anyway. We got no receipt with the changes, just charged based on some arbitrary number.
Finally, after speaking to front desk, we were made aware that the person who handled the Winter Wonderland experience had left expediently, and they would not be able to handle our issue with missing the lights. They expressed remorse and took our contact information, but it was disappointing that no one would be able to assuage the situation other than expressing their sympathies. This is a big event at the hotel, you would assume the hotel would be prepared to handle customer service for it.
With all this being said, we will not be returning, nor will we recommend this restaurant nor hotel to others for these special events. This was a terrible experience to enjoy with smaller children, because their own offerings don't work well together to allow it all to be experienced. I would not have chosen dinner over lights, nor would I have chosen a place where I would have had to chose one or the other for Christmas.
