Salineras de Maras is an extraordinary site, visually defined by thousands of terraced salt pools that cascade down the mountainside. This is not a ruin, but a continuously operating salt mine dating back to pre-Inca times, showcasing impressive ancient engineering.
The pools are naturally filled by a single, highly mineralized saltwater spring. When the water evaporates, it leaves behind the valuable salt, including the famous, gourmet Maras Pink Salt. It’s a powerful experience of tradition, communal work, and geological wonder. The sheer scale and shimmering colors make it a must-see photographic spot in the Sacred Valley.
