On the Grid : Gooseberries

"Most widely known as an all you can eat brunch restaurant serving more St. Louis southern food, the unsung star of this place is their lunch. Bacon wrapped chicken legs, it’s a meal that’s incredibly rich but worth it. Gooseberries does a great job of making unique and customer friendly dishes, serving wide arrays of vegetarian meals alongside their more traditional foods, all for incredibly reasonable prices." - Grain

Wow, we loved this place! It’s such a unique and cozy environment, with the decor and the tv playing a huge collection of cassettes. The employees are super kind and friendly. The food is cooked to order and takes time to come out, but popcorn is given out to munch on while you wait. Really enjoyed this late night spot, will be coming again.

When you walk in you are greeted with an eclectic decor- art museum meets living room- very homey. The music is a trip- jumping genres and decades, and the vhs movie playing is a treat! After you order (and so many great options- my child is vegetarian so this is one of the few places traveling that we had more than a veggie burger choice) you choose where to sit and they bring your drinks and some tasty popcorn to munch on. We had the tofu and pickle pizza (the pickles were sweetish tasted home made and the crunch of fried tofu and rich cheese made this delightful), the house made fries (absolutely delicious), and the French toast (rich and creamy flavor- I didn't even need butter and I usually love to slather my French toast in butter). The gentleman serving us was so very nice (he even brought me additional dinosaurs and sent me off with a to go cup of their kool aid of the day- purplesaurus rex- a favorite from childhood). This was the best place I've eaten in a very long time.

I just had the best omelette of my life. I could take or leave the coffee, but the food was delicious. And they were quick to get it out to me, too. Everything there was fresh home cooking, with children's movies playing through a VCR and TV against the wall. I'm eager to try more from their fun, expansive menu. Update 2021: It's easy to pre-order online -- either for dine-in or carry-out -- and the staff is very welcoming and masked properly. Such a great menu, it was difficult to decide! (I finally went with the fried egg sandwich, a side of carrot pancakes, and black 'n blue mac 'n cheese).

Google
The vegan food here is amazing! I was traveling from out of town and stopped in on my way home. I ordered the lentil burger, donuts, and a pickle pizza per the owners request. Another cool thing they do is bring you fresh popcorn while you wait for your food which was unique. Ross was such a sweetheart, and checked on me throughout the meal, and kept bringing me goodies while I was eating. It was really late when I left, and he even walked me all the way to my car. The food was amazing and the service was outstanding. I will be back every time I’m in the St. Louis area!!

Google
For a late night home cooked meal, you MUST visit this place. So far, I've enjoyed the Vegan Delux pizza and Vegan Nachos. Visit soon, you won't be disappointed!!

Google
Possibly my favorite restaurant or even place in STL. I’m afraid to give it a review because I don’t want people to hear about it because I want Gooseberries all to myself. The best time you’ll have at 2am, wish it was open later. Get the banana pancakes

Google
Charming and comfortable, family-friendly environment with a wide variety of vegan to meat choices of comfort foods -- even a few surprises from the past. The owner and chef, a husband and wife team, proud of their Southside heritage, were welcoming and friendly. We will be coming back, and recommend you add Gooseberries to your list too. Maybe a Monday all you can eat pizza and salad night?

Yelp
Late night service and amazing food. This fun space has a chill vibe and lots of vegetarian options. When you find a good place like this you want to make sure you keep the secret, but the staff cooks great food and they take great care of you. I am not out often out on a late night, but knowing this wonderful place exists gives me a reason to want to!
google avatar

Yelp
Good food for late nights. Nachos and fries were pretty good, we got a cheese pizza that we returned as it was basically tostinos and burned to a crisp (not pictured), they refunded without an issue. The nachos were worth another visit. Better on drunken nights than sober I'd say.
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
Try the cherry hot sauce on anything and everything. I even ate it on my pancakes! Best late night spot in the city in my opinion. They play VHS movies on an old tv while you sit at your table. You get popcorn to eat while you wait. So much to look at and enjoy while there. The owners' positive attitudes & welcoming demeanor are 812% the reason why I will be back - the delicious food is just an added bonus!

Yelp
I ordered TG dinner from this small local restaurant. I had never eaten there but the reviews were favorable and the menu was appealing. Many of the reviews mentioned a longer than average waiting period for the food, which I experienced. It was completely understandable because take home TG dinner is a big effort. Particularly the meticulous way this was formatted So, for my selections : I got a half a smoked/ roasted turkey, bleu cheese Mac, stuffing and sweet potato pecan pie. The smell driving home was divine. So divine that I abandoned all traditions and sat down to TG dinner the minute I got home.(it was Wednesday). This food was some of the finest I have ever eaten. The turkey actually made my eyes roll back in my head. I wish I had two stomachs. I actually feel sorry for those of you who aren't having Gooseberries this holiday. Thank you Gooseberries !!!! You gave me Goosebumps!

Yelp
Gooseberries is a pillar in our community. They feed us wholesome, farm-grown food in what would be a food dessert. They have truly amazing customer service, always walk me to my car when I leave. The interior is cozy and nostalgic, with VHS tapes and player ready to go on a little TV. Their food is incredible and so much love goes into it. We are so grateful that Gooseberries is on our corner.

Yelp
I just had the greatest experience at Gooseberries! I called last week to ask them about reservation for brunch, I have a fairly large group (20 people). They actually don't take reservations but opened an exception for us, not only put the reservation in but they closed for us from 11 to 12:30. We got there today and they were waiting for us, very friendly and nice! Everyone was happy and pleased with the food and service. Thank you so much Gooseberries staff! You made our day! Food was awesome! I love the deep fried tofu.

Yelp
Food was delicious as usual, but the wait was insane, at least 45 minutes. I just would've appreciated a heads up since I was on a schedule. Omelets are still delicious, and I love the carrot pancakes. The coffee is nice and strong, and service is always great and super friendly.

Yelp
The food, customer service & ambiance was amazing. Definitely my favorite place to eat at in Stl !!! I loved & appreciated the many tasty vegan options !

Yelp
The only reason why this place doesn't get 5 stars is how busy and the lack of system they have to obtain a saturday brunch table, but if you are willing to wait- the food is fantastic. The concept is wonderful since it is a great place for vegetarians and meat-eaters a-like. It is a very homey type place. Things to note: 1) Order at the counter and seat yourself 2) On Saturday it is an all-you can eat brunch for about $13pp, but you order any omelet at the counter. 3) Favorite items are the biscuit and gravy, red-eye gravy, tofu sticks, beet rubens, and their ginger ice coffees. 4) I think it would be very hard to take a large group here unless you come before 11am. 5) They open from 11am-3pm 6) Come on a off-day to just get their hand-pies The people are very friendly, but do to the media - it is no longer that secret hole in the wall. It is still none-the-less, exceptional.

Yelp
Yum! I've been meaning to check out this funky spot for years and I'm so glad I finally made it! The vibe is quirky, relaxed/ friendly, and playful. The menu has vegan/ vegetarian stuff and also meat/ dairy options. I got the vegan nachos and beet Reuben which both delicious! The nachos were my favorite and I'm already craving them again. You don't even miss the cheese. My friend got the biscuits and gravy with bacon and eggs and he said it was amazing. While we were waiting for our food the owner brought us over free popcorn! We'll definitely be back, this place was amazing!

Yelp
I don't remember what I ordered first visit, but it was good. Second visit...I'm feeling 3.75 stars for this visit, which was not as good as I remember from before. This time, built my own omelet with spinach, tomato, mozzarella cheese, roasted garlic, and pulled pork. Build your own starts at $6+$1 per topping. $10 for my omelet. Speaking of toppings...they have a metric ton of creative, epic toppings available for your build your own omelets. Seriously...there's a whole board dedicated just to the veggie omelet toppings sorted alphabetically. Another board lists the cheese and meat options. I'd not normally think of putting popcorn or brocolli on an omelet, but you totally can if that's your jam. Their specialty omelets look pretty dank as well (one with bleu cheese mac and cheese) You order at the counter, receive a placeholder figurine (mine was a goat), and they bring your food to you. Specialty omelets are listed on wall and may sell out. They also have a lot of fun, funky art on the wall. They also have specials on different days/night. I see a collection of board games. They have a nice variety of foods, ranging from breakfast, salads, steak specials, sandwiches, tacos, wings, fries, and pizza. On a saturday at 1:15, there was a decent crowd but I was still able to find a place to sit. I parked nearby without issue. Resuming the review here after receiving omelet. Omelet arrived a bit after 2. The omelet was seasoned well. The addition of roasted garlic when I asked for recommendation when I ordered was a good one. The spinach was nice as well. I didn't really notice much / any tomato, and the meat wasn't really what I think of for pulled pork. I expect pulled pork to be tender strings of frequently smoked meat that falls apart easily. What I received was more like strips cut from a pork steak (not smoked) that definitely were not fall apart tender. I had to chew a decent amount. I noticed that they needed to close early today to selling out of items. I'm wondering if this was a substitution made in kitchen? I'd have gotten bacon if I knew the meat wasn't going to be what I traditionally expect from pulled pork. The meat was definitely a disappointment, and I think kitchen forgot tomato or ran out. Otherwise, the flavors were good. I hope my next visit is better.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere! Love that they're open late and offer vegetarian friendly selections.

Yelp
This place is so awesome. The food was excellent and the service by the owner matched some to the last minute. If you are tired of the everyday restaurant make your journey to this place. You can play board games while the owners make your food with love. They even give you fresh popcorn to keep you smacking until It's time to eat. Please Save some time to look at the wall art as well. I don't know how you could leave here unhappy.

Yelp
4.5 stars for one of the most scrumptious, trendiest brunch buffets I've had in town to date! Went on a rainy Saturday shortly after they opened. It gets packed quickly, so show up early if you want one of the few tables they have, or be ready (and comfortable) to share a table with strangers. I was amazed at the selection of items they had in the buffet - there really was something for everybody. Biscuits and three types of gravy, homemade pita chips and dips, bacon, sausage (get the sausage. GET IT), vegan donuts, carrot pancakes, and more. You even get your choice of an omelette with your buffet, which is both a blessing, and sadly, the one downfall of this amazing spot. My omelette had a slider smashed into it. You heard right (from a certain pale colored medieval sounding place). It even came with a packet of mustard horseradish sauce. You'll never want any other omelette again after trying this - I promise, it was that good. My only regret is that the omelette easily took over an hour to get, with how busy the restaurant was. I felt bad as I kept watching people pile in with no seats available as the rest of us waited. To be fair, when they brought the omelette out, we were told they were a man down that day. To conclude: I can't wait to go back to Gooseberries, and I wish these guys the best - my hope is that they're able to expand their space/kitchen relatively soon!

Yelp
I found Gooseberries on Yelp last weekend. My boyfriend and I stopped by for brunch and it was such a delightful experience! We were immediately greeted by the man behind the register. I mentioned that we had never been there before and he gave us all sorts of wonderful advice and recommendations. The food took a little while to get out considering it wasn't overly busy, but honestly that doesn't bother me. It was definitely worth the wait! I got the ranch bbq chicken sandwich. You got to choose your own bread and the man actually recommended I try to waffles. I'm so glad I listened! That paired with the blue cheese Mac n cheese (I don't even like blue cheese) was absolutely delicious and I even took half of it home! I highly recommend you check this place out! If a long wait bothers you at all, they have board games and cards to help you pass time. They also provide complimentary popcorn. A+ in my book!

Yelp
This is a very nice, friendly, and DELICIOUS EATERY!!! Interestingly, the owner's 1st date was making hot sauce together! This is a cute old school vintage restaurant, with great customer service! I ordered the steak-n- cake, the carrot cake pancakes were my absolute favorite. Great for dates, family or meet and greet for friends... they have games to play and tasty popcorn to eat, while you wait for your food. Gooseberries offer amazing options for vegan customers as well. On top of that at at night the menu changes and it's BYOB! Stop by ASAP... you can thank me later!!!

Yelp
Probably one of the worst experiences I've had in recent memory. I've had their food before and it was good! So, my partner and I decided to eat here for breakfast. We ordered and sat down. It didn't seem very busy, but we ended up waiting almost 30 minutes. I asked about our food and the reply was "You got to be patient. Patience is a virtue!" to which my reply was, "Yeah but I'm hungry." We then proceed to eat. The food wasn't bad but not great, either. Rather than see if the food was OK, this same "patient" person literally THROWS two take home boxes on our table and says "Since you're in a hurry, here's some boxes." Look, we literally just started eating our food! Very rude. I ate my entire plate and put the take out boxes on the order counter. I don't appreciate spending $20 for food, without an expectation of how long the food is going to come out, only to get attitude about me being hungry for said food. I won't be back. There's far too many other places in this town to eat.

Yelp
This is a great local spot to go in South City! I have had many things on the menu; biscuits and gravy, mac n cheese, eggs, soup, stew, sandwiches, salads, cookies, hand pies. EVERYTHING is Phenomenal! Cooked with lots of love, you can taste the love! They serve old school 'Chock full o'Nuts' Coffee, and ice ginger coffee, an assortment of sodas, waters, juices...ect. There are always specials. The Pastries, handpies, soups, and specials change daily and always are delicious! It is seat yourself, order at the counter. Community tables, medium sized tables, lil breakfast bar that looks onto the street. An Amazing and friendly staff all around! The owners/cooks are lovely, and Andy the counterman is great! Super friendly, great memory. Great prices for Amazing food!!! We love coming here. It has become a weekly spot for my fiancée and I.

Yelp
WOW. Yelp pointed us in this direction for brunch, and it did not disappoint. We walked in and immediately got the scoop from Miles--pay up front, put in your omelet order when you arrive (see photos for a list of 5000 filing choices), and "Oh by the way, how do you feel about pancakes?" I was initially thrown off because the non-made to order stuff was set out in crockpot type dishes, but my wariness didn't last long. It turned out to be cafeteria style, down to the little paper serving dishes. Things I ate: -Freshly made tortilla chips with beer cheese: yum -The three house pancakes for the day (carrot cake, strawberry, and spinach/garlic): all delicious, went back for more of the carrot cake -Bottomless bacon: the thick cut kind, just the way I like it -Homemade donuts: chewy and covered in powdered sugar -Fresh blood orange/pineapple juice -World's best breakfast potatoes: seem to have been both fried and baked, amazingly seasoned, definitely had seconds of these babies -Omelet with bacon, cheddar, sauteed onion, and popcorn: well made, huge portion, hard for me to eat it all but I certainly tried! In addition to all of that, there were tons of things that I didn't have room to try: three different and beautiful salads, biscuits and a few kinds of gravy, sausage, pulled pork that looked legitimately smoked, fancy cookies, waffles, several tofu choices, bacon-wrapped chicken legs, and more. We came in from out of town and weren't familiar with the area at all. I'm not sure the restaurant matched the surrounding neighborhood, but we didn't care and street parking was easy and free. What really sealed the deal for me on this dining experience is that it was only $13 per person (very reasonable for brunch, even non-buffet style) but the quality of the food was absolutely outstanding, and it was clear that every single dish was freshly made. The only complaint I might have is that this brunch is only offered on Saturdays...if I were a local, I would need it way more than that!

Yelp
Wonderful brunch!!! What a great place, such a gem ... been wanting to try for a long time and it did not disappoint. Very cool spot with TONS of character, be sure to enjoy the decor, play a game, soak in the atmosphere, etc. Food portions were large, very reasonably priced, and a wonderfully unique menu. Biscuits & gravy: very good, wife got the vegan gravy, which we both liked better than the sausage gravy I got on mine. Carrot pancakes were tasty, and I also got the banana pancakes which were the star of the meal, ... absolutely delish. I like the side of peanut butter to top the banana pancakes, and I like that the 'regular' butter came on the side. Wife's omelette was huge and tasty. I also got the veg and meat handhelds of the day, which were very good. I prefer a bread-ier crust, these hand-helds were made with a flakier pie crust, but I would not hesitate to order again if the fillings are to my liking. Lastly, I got a side of the mac & cheese, which was exceptional ... I loved the flavor. Maybe not as creamy texture as someone might expect, but absolutely delicious. They also have lots of unique sauces to add to your dishes, and complimentary freshly popped popcorn. I did not order one, but they just put out fresh baked bagels, which looked incredible. This is a must visit if you're looking for a unique neighborhood spot. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to enjoy the experience, it's a small run restaurant, they take their time to hand prepare all the food from scratch, it's not a mass production churn & burn restaurant, and that's a good thing, it shows in the quality of the food. Lastly, afterwards as we were walking out to our car, the owner literally ran out into the street after us to hand us a complimentary fresh baked cookie. ...which was of course delicious. What a tremendously generous and hospitable gesture!!! Make sure you experience this special spot..

Yelp
I had read and heard great things about Gooseberries, and went one afternoon for lunch. When I came in, I was surprised by the vegan/vegetarian options, but not turned off by them. They had a sausage and kale hand pie, and a vegan chili- and I added a local soda to finish off my meal. While I waited, I saw there was a TV with tons of DVD options to choose from, and good bit of people watching to enjoy as well. My handpie was good- great flaky crust, flavorful inside, but my chili was insane. I'm an omnivore, and when I make my chili, it's all about the beans and the protein... but Gooseberries' chili (was it vegan? Well, vegetarian at least!) was insanely good- so savory, I didn't miss the meat at all. Wow. So good. The chili alone has me hooked. I'll definitely be returning there.

Yelp
Four stars, plus the fifth and final star for being funky and local. A must for locals and visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Edenic society co-existing in a parallel time stream with Y'all. Just don't drink from the forbidden side of the old tin camp cup. *Reminders:Don't rely solely on yelp reviews to make decisions, don't make bad yelp reviews to make yourself feel important, always tip your server.

Yelp
Food is great. Had an omelette, very good! Also the KFT and loved the dip. Really must gat back earlier In day for a full breakfast. Also had the chili and loved it! The best part was the chocolate chip and strawberry cookies!!! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Ok, this place is great. Let's begin: It's tight quarters, I would go early for brunch to make sure you get a seat. It's open seating with large, picnic-style tables so you'll be sharing with strangers, which makes it more fun! We got the buffet, which is $13/ person, which includes the made-to-order omelettes, with ingredients like popcorn, potato chips, and some normal stuff, too lol. They made me a custom one after asking me some questions to get to know me and it was ahhhmaaazingggg. So on the buffet were a couple vegan options, pecan pancakes and other sweet options, vegan and non-vegan chili (for on top of nachos, or on its own), homemade biscuits, crispy bacon, sausage, home made sausage gravy, and I can't even remember what else. Oh! There were potatoes and some tossed mixed green salads with home made dressings. It's all in crock pots and things like that so it's very home-y and all in fresh, small batches. It does run out quickly, though, so keep that in mind when you're planning a time to go. They also have coffee, sparkling orange juice, lemon water, and other drink options. They also offer cans of soda and other stuff for additional purchase. We didn't have room for our omelets so they packaged them to-go for us. Overall, the service was great and the people were very laid back and willing to help. They weren't very proactive, you have to ask for what you need, there are no servers, and if something runs out you need to let them know. We went at a busy time and our omelettes took about a half hour. It was pretty cramped in there, but again, that adds to the appeal. Parking is street parking and the area isn't that great, so there's lots of parking. Overall, I would definitely visit again and can't wait to try another customized omelette.

Yelp
Daily specials with handpies that are to die for! I tried the butterscotch apple, pad Thai, and red eye gravy covered biscuit. I'm amazed at the talent and creativity in the food! It's addicting, delicious, and so well priced I find myself heading down Chippewa to try what's new. Perhaps walking there will make me feel less guilty at my indulgence. Must try, and to again to test out all of what's new.

Yelp
Ok - so, I'm gonna need to go back but I stopped in last weekend and I've been thinking about this place nonstop since. This is a very good sign! One of our good friends lives in Benton Park and we normally hang out on the weekends and explore the neighborhood together. We struck out badly a couple of times at the mud house, so we already came in with some eagerness to love this place. It didn't disappoint!!!! My menu recommendations are as follows: Biscuits and gravy - perfect portion and not too greasy, but just the right amount of greasy so that you know you're getting the real deal. Saint Paul on an everything bagel. Yumm. I love a good Saint Paul and I've long suffered through the white bread fiasco that accompanies it. No longer! Big ups to the staff for their patience while we took forever to decide. They genuinely seemed to love the menu and that appreciation was heartily expressed with each response to my questions.

Yelp
I love this place so much. I've never been somewhere with such an extensive menu, where everything is made from scratch, made with love, and uniquely crafted with a mature palate in mind. The staff is personable and wants you to have the best experience in their space. It is essential that you try this place!

Yelp
I absolutely love this place!!! I'm really happy that they seem to always be open when I need them to be.. The food is great and the desserts are awesome!

Yelp
Gooseberries had awesome food and even more awesome people! The omelet was fantastic (chicken, cheddar, and caramalized onions). The carrot cake pancake was the icing on the top! Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
I only recently heard of this place, but it was a two-pronged attack. Someone was looking for turkey legs, and Gooseberries came up in conversation with their bacon-wrapped drumsticks. Conversation quickly veered to their 3 Little Pigs omelette and their Root Beer Chicken.. Later, a vegetarian friend was raving about a brunch buffet that they couldn't get enough of. This veg-friendly buffet? Gooseberries. It's rare to find a location that caters so well to both major food parties that they are presented as icons in both carni- and herbivore circles. Today, I partook in the aforementioned brunch. I was not disappointed. Great flavors, cool setting, and a remarkably large selection for such a little place. Oh! And the buffet price includes one of their specialty omelettes or a build-your-own! Get thee to a Goosberries!

Yelp
Very unassuming restaurant. They had amazing food that had a twist. I had pb&j with bacon and my celiac husband had yummy fried gluten free tofu! Service was great. Food was all fresh. Atmosphere was eclectic, relaxed, and fun. We're just passing through but would be more regular if we lived in the area.

Yelp
Saturday brunch is yummy! lots of home made goodies. you get a made to order omlette with all the extras for brunch. vegan carrot pancakes and dont miss the biscuits that melt in your mouth. coffee fans can get iced ginger coffee. mango orange juice. great brunch!

Yelp
If you're in a pinch between vegetarian/vegan or meat eaters restaurant. Look no further. Ross and Kim work tirelessly to insure that everyone leave satisfied at their establishment. Even as a meat lover... their biscuits and veggie gravy is some of the best in St. Louis. I also recommend the tofu sampler with sauces. I've worked with Gooseberries on a catering level as well. Again 5 Stars. Absolutely zero issues and everyone left satisfied and impressed. My only issues is I wish they had more than one location!

Lindsey S.

Yelp
The best , hands down . Home cooked , home grown and full of flavor and love . Can't be beat. Everything from salads to smoked meats , breakfast awesomeness , to delicious home made baked goods and sauces . Do yourself a favor and go order way to much of everything like we always do. You will not be disappointed .

Yelp
KSDK featured Gooseberries on their breakfast favorites segment. That, coupled with the reviews here, pushed us to give the Sat brunch a try. We arrived 20 mins after they opened & there was already no place to sit in a max 49 person occupancy. But we decided to stay and brave it out to wait for a table. We placed our order at the counter for our omelets and decided to grab something to munch off of the buffet till we could get a table. They had such a rush right when they opened that nearly everything was empty already. So I grabbed some pita chips with the beer chz sauce and a few breakfast potatoes to munch on while we were standing. Both delicious! The next free table was grabbed up by people who came in after us. : ( But another kind couple waived us over to take their seats. (I wish the mgmnt had a way of controlling the crowd & customers wait better, like a waiting line or something.) The food we were able to try was really delicious! Well, when there was food. Even the red eye gravy was good, which is bank in our book! The bacon was thick & smokey and I agree with everyone else on the carrot pancakes! Delish! But there were just too many people for the too little food that was being brought out. As soon as they brought anything out, people jumped on what there was, and it was all empty again. We never did get one of the bacon wrapped chicken legs. We munched on the buffet on what was available, grabbed some of the tasty blood orange/pineapple juice, and sat waiting for our omelets, and waiting, and waiting. Over 45 mins later, our omelets finally came, along with an apology from the staff. I appreciated it & understood that they were completely overwhelmed. It's possible the great review and the publicity on KSDK Channel 5 breakfast spots turned into more success than they were prepared to handle?? Either way, that sort of success, causing such delays in service, will tend to solve it's own problem. But the food was definitely delicious, even the late omelet. I probably would have given this a 4.5 stars, because it was so tasty. Bu the service just negated so much. Hopefully we will be able to try again another day and have a better experience.

Yelp
Top contender for best brunch in St. Louis. Absolutely. Without a moment's hesitation. Gooseberries brunch is so phenomenal on every level, that I almost DON'T want to tell people about it, as the current stardom of places like Mudd and Southwest Diner make it tough to get a table. $13 for an all you can eat brunch. Everything included and nearly everything homemade. If you like brunch and don't try Gooseberries soon, you are an idiot. You start by paying at the counter and ordering an omelet, or eggs cooked to order. They have ~15 veggies and ~8 types of meat, and some truly insane combinations (The Giggitty has black/blue mac and cheese, caramelized onions and smoked meat) if you don't want to create your own. The guy working was just cool as hell. He patiently explained absolutely everything. Everyone working there was just so incredibly pleasant, helpful, and just Cool. As. Hell. Some standouts from the brunch buffet: homemade biscuits w/ sausage gravy (veg and red-eye gravy available too), carrot cake pancakes, house made sausage, ginger iced coffee, three fried tofu things that I don't know how to describe but were so stupid-good, house peppercorn ranch, citrus-y kale salad and the crazy-kickass omelets. We loved everything so damn much that we were basically giddy. Beautiful space, killer food, top-notch service and all in a part of town that doesn't get much love? Hell yes. 'Everything is Awesome' from The Lego Movie kept playing in my head because everything rocked so hard. Best overall brunch experience we have had in years. Already planning our next trip (lol - yeah right I don't plan anything but we will be back soon, probably Tuesday if you wanna be real). Just go.

Yelp
We finally found time to make our way down for a Saturday brunch at Gooseberries. The glowing reviews are exactly right, and I concur with uber-hipster and star reviewer Nate Marschalk: this place is dope. As. Hell. Flat fee $13 for the brunch buffet, including made to order omelets. Lest you confuse this option with the fare found at the run of the mill hotel breakfast buffet, let me disabuse you of that notion. The list of ingredient options is vast. I had kale, thick cut bacon, jalapeño, Gouda, and popcorn. There were many more esoteric and delicious choices. There is a gravy bar (red eye FTW) for the biscuits, a nacho bar (beer cheese!) and salad options. Also some ridiculous pretzel and wasabi-fried tofu choices. Iced ginger coffee and orange pineapple juice. Did I mention it is $14? And they didn't charge for the kids to eat? The guy at the register--Miles--is awesome, too.

Yelp
Cool decore. Fascinating menu with lots of Veggie options. Excellent coffee. Amazing pumpernickel toast with a very good spinach and mushroom omelet. That's the good news. Mediocre egg sandwich. Now for the bad news. We ordered at 12:15. We were served at 2pm! Our first time eating here. We really try to support new, creative ventures in areas of St Louis City trying to redevelop. But... we just waited toooo long for our food. And why you ask, did we actually wait that long??? Dunno!

Yelp
The reviews led us here, and we were not disappointed. So happy we decided to check this place out. The staff is friendly, the decor is really neat, and the food was incredible. I love their logo! The prices alone should win the hearts of many. I got a delicious fried egg sandwich on homemade jalapeño cheddar bread and the daily handpie special (Mac & cheese!) for $5. Five dollars. The dining area is kitschy and clean -- lots to look at. We dined on a Tuesday morning and I cannot wait to go back for the Saturday brunch buffet. Support this great local spot -- it will not leave you wanting.

Yelp
Great new bakery, lunch and brunch spot off east Chippewa near Broadway. Casual family style with plenty of vegetarian/vegan items. Just had fried chicken, eggs to order, tofu sticks, stewed apples, pulled pork and a beet Reuben. $13. The place definitely has a bit of a hippy dippy vibe going. The baker primarily prepares baked goods for the local restaurant industry, Open until 3 Tuesday through Thursday and Saturdays.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place out. Customer service was great and food was decent. We waited an hour for our food and watch those around us wait as long. We were growing a little impatient but our food came out and the employee gave us a free cookie for our wait. I got the vegan slinger which was a mix of beans, potatoes, vegan chili and bread. It was ok. I would come back again if I knew It wouldn't take as long to get a meal.

Yelp
Miles is awesome. I get there a couple times a week. Great selection of stuff to try. The biscuits and red-eye gravy (made with bacon and coffee) is great. Not expensive either. They also do a buffet style brunch on Saturdays from 11 am - 3.

Yelp
What a fun place. Great for vegetarians. I got the tofu hash and it was delicious. The food takes awhile to come out but it's so worth it and there are card games and board games to keep you busy while you wait. Great crowd too.

Yelp
There is no place in town that comes close to Gooseberries' splendor. Everything is as fresh as it gets and the flavor combos are crazy creative but totally approachable. It's like the comfort food you wish you were smart and talented enough to make yourself. Luckily the prices are so reasonable you can have Gooseberries make it all for you! The only bad part is there are way too many options and it's hard to decide what to get. I recommend multiple visits and lots of handpies to take home for later. Plus cookies. Also everything. Darling interior, super friendly staff, a real boon to the neighborhood!

Yelp
Gooseberries is a gem in the neighborhood. The omelets are creative and those hand pies are truly my favorite comfort food. Thank you. Plus, the atmosphere there is cozy af. Thanks.

Yelp
They no longer have the buffet which is a better scenario. Excellent food, love the order at counter option.

Yelp
Brunch here is great. $13 all you can eat breakfast meats, potatoes, hot and iced coffee, OJ, gravy bar, etc etc plus a specialty omelette (or you can make your own). It wasn't too busy but for some reason our omelettes took 30 minutes to come out. They were delicious but we had already stuffed ourself on the buffet so the omelettes kind of went to waste. The crowd is very hip (including the staff) but everyone was extremely polite. We would love to come back just for the buffet and skip the omelettes. The buffet is out of this world--home cooked and kept warm in crock pots, it's like being at a family brunch.

Yelp
Great quirky atmosphere. VERY friendly and courteous service. The owner greeted us immediately upon entering. His wife the chef was friendly too. The food is amazing, especially the banana pancakes! I will definitely be back. What a great jewel in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Tasty food and nice place to talk for a long time! Maybe a little expensive (breakfast) but it was definitely good.
