On the Grid : Twenty One

"This one is for the comfort food lovers. If you are after a meal that just makes you feel good and with a warm heart don’t look any further, Twenty One is just your place! Feeding their loyal customers for breakfast, lunch and dinner since September 1958 and still run by the same family, the restaurant was the first to offer alfresco dining experience to Sydney and the first espresso coffee machine to the eastern suburbs. Our favourite dishes? Veal schnitzel with creamed spinach and the chicken noodle matzo ball soup." - CoMa

This restaurant has been here for 65+ years and I’m sure they haven’t changed the decor, or the food over this time and they don’t need to. Families have been coming here for decades and the food is good, maybe a little overpriced. We had a schnitzel and you get to choose 2 sides, I chose creamed spinach, which I really really didn’t like and mash with mushroom sauce which you have to pay extra for. We also got the cucumber salad which was fabulous and highly recommended. The service was friendly even if slow. I did enjoy it, but have been spoilt with better from other restaurants.

Good old fashioned comfort food, great staff and service and a nice rustic charm made last night’s dinner experience immensely enjoyable. I’ve been here before and it’s always a pleasurable dining experience.

Overpriced and pretty poor. Scrambled eggs on toast was overcooked & sourdough toast way too thick. Eggs on spinach, the spinach was frozen mush heated in a bowl with overcooked eggs thrown on top. French toast had no cinnamon in it. On the plus side the coffee was good.

This is a perfect place for homey and hearty food. We had fish and schnitzel and both were fresh and delicious. Very relaxing atmosphere with two seating area, inside and outside. Service is super friendly and caring. Thank you.

A friend arrived from OS and wanted to eat Hungarian / euro. We all ordered differnt meals and sides ... And qe did share. It was fantastic. A nice surprise. The food really was excellent and the aervice was friendly and personal. It really was a first class experience. Also you could order different size meals. A nice bonus. Its not often you can rant that everything was perfect. The next day i said how much I enjoyed the food , as it was still a fresh experience in my mind. The langosh was good too. Not at all like hockey pucks (Personal Joke) Its been at least 25 uears since I was there. I belive i will return with friends... Shortly. Thank you for "saving " Hungarian food in sydney.

We walked in without a reservation to a full house. The staff and owners found us a table for 4, served us quickly, food came quickly. We ordered garlic bread, a meat platter for 3 ppl but eaten aggressively by 2, lamb cutlets, some great WA Pinot Noir at a very reasonable price and 2 kids desserts for 1 kid as the chocolate mousse and ice cream tasted so good. Above all we had a great chat with the owner and about hungary. Such a friendly, affordable, quick and tasty place to eat and being welcomed makes this an easy place to come back to. Bravo for places like this that are still run by people that care and great food. Thanks for having us 21 🙏
