"About an hour north of Auckland , Matakana is an eclectic coastal town that attracts city slickers with its bohemian food, wine, and arts scene. With only four lodge rooms situated on a working vineyard near the entrance to the gorgeous Takatu Peninsula, Takatu Lodge offers a peaceful respite that combines beach and bush with art and wine. Two ocean-facing suites take in panoramas of Hauraki Gulf, while the upstairs suites overlook vineyards, a small ocean inlet, and the omnipresent farmland. All of them feature vaulted wood ceilings, slide-away doors, double-occupancy bathtubs, and private balconies made for enjoying an alfresco breakfast or a glass of wine as the sun goes down.Rooms are also stocked with yoga mats, fresh juice, locally roasted coffee, Bennetts chocolates, house-baked “biscuits” (cookies), and a take-home candle whose scent matches the one in the bathroom."

From the moment we arrived we felt very relaxed and welcomed by Sharon. She is an AMAZING host. We were given bubbles followed by a platter and then their wines to try. Sharon is very knowledgeable about the wines and area. She organised for transport to and from Matakana as we went to Jin Jin (also recommend) for dinner. When we came back she had the fire going and handed us glasses of wine. Great conversations. In the morning we had a beautifully prepared 2 course breakfast looking over the awesome views. Highly recommend as stay or 2 here!

We spent a very relaxing one night in this gorgeous place which you would never know is here from the outside, very tucked away and subtle! Beautiful suite looking over the vineyard to the sea in the distance, the bath by the window in the bathroom had the same view. We were given such a warm welcome, offered a glass each of their own excellent sparkling wine with a cheese plate, and asked if a load of laundry could be done for us. Very helpful. A delicious 4 course dinner was prepared for us in the open plan kitchen/dining area/sitting area accompanied by different wines from the vineyard. Breakfast also very good, especially with the tranquil view beyond.

Just leaving the winery now. The host Sharon is so kind and very friendly. The location of the property is simply stunning. We are so disappointed we are leaving today. Absolutely recommend staying here.

Takatu Lodge is a luxuriously appointed lodge with stunning views. It’s a place that immediately feels like home. None of this would be possible, however without Sharon and her assistant, Olivia. They greeted us, welcomed us like long lost friends, and then entertained us for the entirety of our stay, which was far too short I might add. They delighted us with pre-dinner hors d’oeuvres, followed by a wonderful dinner, and all with a delightful selection of wonderful wines. They offered wine suggestions, possible sites to see, and engaged in some truly enjoyable conversation. When it came down to leave, we really didn’t want to. Thank you, Sharon and Olivia!

My wife and I ended our recent four-week vacation in Australia and New Zealand with a six-night wind-down stay at Takatu Lodge and Vineyards. It was heavenly!||The open courtyard lodge is perched on top of a hill with pastoral views in all directions. Our bedroom was very comfortably furnished and had a full wall panoramic window opening out eastward to a private patio with a wonderful view of the vineyard, rolling hills and Kawau Bay and Island in the distance. The very large bathroom also shared this view from the tub by the panorama window. Meals were taken in the central main building with a library and a very large common room, where a mild breeze was allowed by full wall glass doors on three sides, and where breakfasts and dinners were prepared and served by Sharon Greene, our hostess and lodge manager.||Sharon was the Lodge’s primary asset. A skilled chef, she used fresh local ingredients to create exquisite culinary masterpieces which were, of course, expertly paired with Takatu Vineyard whites, rosés and reds from Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot varietals. Matching her talents, her sweet personality is eminently well suited for her role and responsibilities. Welcoming, friendly and personable, she made us feel immediately at home and relaxed, while she generously shared her wealth of knowledge about the area and region. A true Kiwi gem!||The lodge is located 5-10 minutes drive from Matakana, where a handful or restaurants and stores offer good food, local wines and shopping within a small area. Several vineyards, offering tasting - in some cases with food pairing, are located within a 30-minutes drive radius from Takatu Lodge. The area also boasts galleries with eclectic fine and modern art displayed indoor, in beautiful gardens and along art trails. The art displays can also be enjoyed with wine tasting.||Outdoor enthusiasts, as we are, we spent many hours hiking the trails of the Tāwharanui Open Sanctuary, located 20 minutes SE of the lodge, via a very winding road. The large, beautiful peninsula, surrounded by a marine reserve offers hiking, swimming and surfing in serene surroundings. The South Coast track to Maori Bay, winding below steep slopes, along waves breaking against volcanic boulders, provided both excitement and good exercise. The return path high above, wound along a string of hills with stunning views of Kawau Bay. The Eco Trail took us through forested hills, gullies with quiet streams along a well maintained path, alive with birdsong and sightings, exotic and rare for us Northerners. A truly unforgettable experience! This hidden gem in New Zealand offered a unique location with breathtaking views and exceptional hospitality. The highlight of our stay was the top-tier chef, who crafted a personalized meal that exceeded all expectations. Every ingredient was fresh, every dish was original, and the flavors were perfectly balanced.||After spending a full month exploring New Zealand, this was undoubtedly the best meal we had—thoughtfully tailored to our preferences, yet still a delightful surprise. Beyond the culinary excellence, the host’s warmth and local knowledge made the experience even more special. They provided valuable insights about the region, offering recommendations that led us to some of the most stunning spots off the beaten path.||A perfect blend of scenery, service, and sensational food—an absolute must-visit!

The rooms are well appointed, comfortable and large with good amenities. Sharon is an excellent host and when we were there, she did everything for us and the other couple staying that night. We had dinner and breakfast in our package and Sharon cooked a delicious meal accompanied by wines from the vineyard (and we were welcomed with wine and cheese and served a different wine before dinner with canapes). Sharon made sure that she was aware of our food likes and dislikes and adjusted the menu to accommodate these. Breakfast was also delicious with homemade bread.

We are home and we're still raving about Takatu Lodge and Vineyard! The hostess was fabulous. The setting divine. The room over the top. We were tried from driving and hiking and eagerly accepted wine from the vineyard after the hostess offered to pop into town and pick up dinner for us! Otherwise, we might have been too tired to drive to town for food. Having our laundry completed was a real time saver for our trip and greatly appreciated. I would love to bring my family back in the future and really relax and enjoy ourselves to the fullest. Wish we had stayed longer in such a fabulous setting. Thank you Sharron!
