Spudnik is a co-op that allows creatives and such to use their equipment in the studio for their own personal pursuits. They have letterpress, screen printing equipment, lithography, and more at your disposal. A membership with Spudnik gains you access to all of this and there are different levels based on what you want to use the studio for (basic and volunteer for more casual artists and keyholder for those who, say, make a living off of their art). If you're new to all of this they also lead classes and workshops for outside groups as well, including classes on screen printing, zine making, lithography, risography, letterpress, photoshop and more. I had a great time here designing and screen printing t-shirts with my colleagues last week. Tara and the other Spudnik folks were so fantastic, walking us through the process of creating the image (we did a collaborative drawing but you can also use their computers to create something digitally) then taking us through the steps of screen printing. I had done some INCREDIBLY DIY screen printing years ago so it was great to see how it's done in a proper setting with a dark room and all that good stuff. She told us all about the different screen gauges, the emulsion process, and more. So fun and educational! A super cool space that I wish I had known about when I lived in Chicago. I would have definitely joined and exercised my creativity, no doubt.

Loved my experience at Spudnik! We rented out the place for a team bonding screen printing experience and had a blast! As others have mentioned, this is a space for creatives to play. While there are studios for individual artists that are in-house, there are letterpress and screen printing machines as well as workshops that are offered to the general public. Our group made a screenprinting design, where we collaborated on a drawing between the 12 of us and the wonderful staff helped us make T-Shirts with the original screenprint that we created! It was a fun, involved process and the staff at Spudnik made it easy, seamless and stress-free. I'm freaking out over Spudnik Press! Screenprinting has been on my bucket list since I can remember. So, as you can probably imagine, when I was told we were having a company outing at Spudnik to screenprint a group-designed t-shirt, I was ecstatic! I'd heard of Spudnik before. It's this really cool printing co-op where artists come to share the space and equipment with others for their personal printing projects. In my opinion, the membership fees are nominal for what you get. They offer equipment and tools for screenprinting, relief, etching, monoprint, lithography, letterpress and offset. They have a host of classes that are beyond reasonably priced, a small gallery area for print shows, and best of all they are the ultimate resource for anything and everything you want or need to know about printing. Our team of 13 showed up, we pre-ordered t-shirts, and there were two instructors waiting to assist us. They had prepped our screen ahead of time, and we got to work creating the design. Such a great small group outing. Each of us created a piece of art to add to the design. After that we handed it over to our instructors so they could burn the screen for us. With assistance, each one of us got to ink our own shirts. It was just so completely satisfying. The end result was a design and shirt made with so much love, and it is so beautiful. Thank you to Spudnik for changing the course of my life--you will see me again. And for those who have printing on their bucket list, I insist you go now.

I just adore any place that makes you feel like an artist. Don't let the exterior apartment-like building fool you. Behind the doors you'll find Spudnik Press- an art studio where all are welcome regardless of skill. I 100% promise you you'll leave feeling extremely fulfilled and in touch with your inner artist. I came here with a group of co-workers to create a custom group screen print t-shirt. The instructors are incredibly patient, kind, and really care about their craft. They made the process simple, interactive, and were present with words of encouragement. They directly helped every person on our team create their t-shirt with little judgment. The studio itself is very relaxing and inspiring, especially since it's filled with artwork and interesting lighting fixtures. They also feature works of art for sale, which I browsed while my team took turns screen printing their t-shirts. I also just adore that they are printing co-op collective. As Angela S pointed out, artists can come and share resources, skills and equipment for a small membership fee. Totally worth the price if you're into screen printing, or want to learn!

I've taken the letterpress 101 classes and from there continued on learning and now print independently as a member. I like having access to the materials and presses and being apart of a community of artists. Check out the variety of workshops and events they have and make something cool!

Life to me is kinda a total let down.....fore whatever that means...But this place is actually worth the little money that one should gladly be willing to part with..Because it is actually good!!!!!! The instructors are very knowledgeable you might learn more techniques than you did at actual art school sometimes and it is pretty much on the cheap. over all a good place to become a better artist and either be layed back and have fun and work at your own pace or really grind your teeth and hone your craft like anywhere " I SAY BE A GOOD SHIT " and do not mess it up for other people...I say if you go to this special place than mind your Ps and Qs because artists need places to go and the good People of Spudnik did all the really hard work and payed the bills and made this great place happen and YOU PEOPLE KNOW TO ACT RIGHT I would not say these things if I did not really like this working artist space Go there draw...and printmake.....BECOME YOURSELF peace and love thanx you for your programs Spudnik ...." for printmakers who are too poor to be so impressive that they own their own Press" d. meister

Awesome place for printmaking! Having studied various types of printmaking in college, this place is set up nicely with litho and etching equipment. If you go to their website you'll see that they also have good selection of supplies there for people to use. I took a class there for learning how to screen print on t-shirts and was taught very well, plus I got to use there silk screens, screen printing tools, and glow in the dark ink. It was a pretty large class too but the instructor was still really nice and helpful to each person there. Also, Spudnik is very reasonably priced for everything you can get out of it to help make your work.

This has got to be the coolest place in Chicago. In any category. My partner and I had a concept in mind for a printmaking project, but had absolutely zero experience and zero practical knowledge of how to get it done. I called Angee at Spudnik, and she worked with our schedule and set up a private lesson to teach us everything we needed to know. In just three short hours, she transformed two noobs with a dream to two silkscreening experts making their dreams come true. We took advantage of the open studio to silkscreen 200 CD eco-wallets and the whole thing was just like a dream. I felt like I was in Santa's workshop, having a blast while working away. The other elves in Spudnik were working on hoodies, onsies, fliers, postcards, etc. It was such a cool atmosphere, and everyone got along and we chatted with each other about our projects. It was such fun! Our project is finished and we sold out in 36 hours! Now I'm trying to think of more excuses to go to Spudnik. I'll certainly take some classes and maybe even do some radical typesetting. This place rules.

This printmaking gallery and studio is an incredible place. With affordable classes, a great deal of resources, and great public events like openings, studio hours, and auctions, Spudnik Press does a lot for the art community. I am grateful that a resource like this exists in Chicago!

Absolutely amazing place! I had a chance to take a Screen-printing class there last year and I fell in love with the process! It is my new passion now and every chance I have I would run to Open studio to print. Besides Screen-printing they have vast variety of different classes for different level of print knowledge. Spudnik Press has good amount of space and can accommodate quite a few working artists at once. Open studios are held in the evenings and through the weekends so artists and passionate newbies can come in and print away. Come and see for yourself! Try classes and you won't regret it!
