Kapalua Golf - The Plantation Course

Kapalua Plantation Course is pricey, but it is worth every penny. The golf experience is awesome. The course was incredibly great condition even though it was really dry. Every single hole is something special except hole 2. The course provides an impressive challenge with amazing golf course design. Holes 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 15, 17 and 18 are simply stunning. Greens are relatively small and really fast. Overall, it is a top 5 golfing experience.

I was very skeptical about how good Plantation would be given the historical hype/reputation and the recent closure and news of poor conditions. Played December 1st and it was amazing!! Conditions were PGA level, views are insane and the course was hard but super fun and unique. One of the few places I’ve played where it was worth almost $500 and I want to play again already, after thinking this would be one and done! Only slight issue was pace which was surprisingly slow given 12 min team times, cost and getting out at 8AM. Finished about 4:30 but waited on almost every tee box with another group typically on the tee behind us. Overall though well worth it, beautiful views from the restaurant and solid food with great service.

Golf Course closed due a water issue apparently caused by The Pineapple growers. PGA tour stop canceled in 2026 due to the water issue. Employees say the course is mending and will soon return to it's past glory.

Got to golf the newly redone plantation course at Kapalua. The first hole was not completed so we got a discount. Really great course and in great shape. Super friendly staff and great experience all around.

Gorgeous views from this top tier golf course and facilities. Would have loved to play if time in my travels permitted. At $469 per round, they are extremely proud of it, too! The pro shop is accessible for people to purchase merchandise, and restaurants have some breathtaking Maui Northwest coastline. Staff was friendly and professional.

Course was amazing and seems to be in a lot better shape than it was a couple months ago. Lucked out on the weather and wasn't too windy. I'll definitely be coming back!

Great golf. Great food. Outstanding service from the Kapalua team at the Plantation course. Its a must play for golfers when visiting Maui.

While the views were very nice, the golf course conditions were the worst that I have ever played on. Completely dried out fairways and the greens were not much better. The Bay course was the same. Very disappointing for my wife and my bucket list trip to Hawaii. I have played public courses for $50 bucks that are much better condition. We will not return.

Staff, course, restaurant, pro shop - all were amazing. Can't wait to come back..... Mahalo

Paid over $600 and had to warm up on mats is the most insane shit ever lol. It's a nice course but that is just lazy work by management.

Played the Bay course. Last time I played it in 1992......boy have things changed. Like a muni. Staff was friendly. Range was torn up, not much grass. I could not believe the horrible condition. Grass was in poor shape and greens were grainy and uneven. Very disappointed, as we played Wailea Gold the day before and it was like playing Pebble Beach and a muni in Muncie Indiana. $200 for a round and the locals bragged they payed $50. Felt we got a bad deal. Could not believe the horrible conditions. The views were good but not anywhere near the Wailea Gold course. Would not go back. Only reason I gave it 2 stars is the amazing Philippino guy who worked downstairs in the caddy area. Very nice. No real water or amenities on the course . Very disappointed.

Called to inquire about junior rates. Was told each minor MUST have identification proving their age. We golf regularly and have never been asked to confirm my kids are kids. Lady who answered the phone was frankly rude from the beginning. Said, "well here on Maui our kids have permits." Well, we are not local - and, no, not all minors actually get their drivers licenses as teens. We have never traveled with kids' passports - unless internationally. And neither of my kids have started driving. No US airport requires minor identification! This course, which charges $299 for juniors at Plantation has completely unreasonable expectations. AVOID. I've played Kapalua a few times but will not come back.

Played Bay and Plantation. Have to say I was disappointed with the conditions. I get aeration. I live with it all summer in Seattle, but there were so many uneven greens. Overall the treatment at Plantation was much better. Attentive staff and good guidance on the course. Day 2 at Bay was like a muni. No amenities and just a patchwork course that had you chasing signs. Of course the views were beautiful, but aren't they all on the island? Wish I had spread out my golf and tried another company...oh well. I still played golf in paradise for a weekend.

A beautiful course just like you see on TV. It is definitely a must when you're a golfer and in Maui. $485 for a round per person at the plantation course. Totally Worth it. The greens are maintained nicely and the course is very challenging. Not for a beginner or someone who just want to try playing golf for the first time. The pro shop staff were nice and helpful. Nice merchandise.... Pricey but nice! The restaurant is a good place as well to have lunch. Definitely recommended!

This is one of the most beautiful and amazing golf courses I've been to! At one point you hit the ball over the ocean. Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

Decent course and good view. The starter Bob has no emotional intelligence and social awareness. He should not be the face of the organization on the first tee. He ruined our round/day with his insulting comments he made on the first hole. The starter should obviously be customer service oriented and know how to communicate with guest. Bob should NOT be customer facing. Michael Castillo the pro on the course was patronizing in his attempt to hear our concern and argumentative while acting like we were inconveniencing him. Worst customer service ever. Bob and Michael should not work with the general public.

Aloha! The Plantation Course is in amazing condition and the views are hard to beat. HOWEVER...it's highly overrated in terms of value for the money. For the $$$$ the course charges per round, it was disappointing that the club drop was not accurately labeled (therefore our clubs didn't make it onto our carts in a timely manner), there was no one to greet us at the front, the proshop failed to tell us when we checked in that they would be closed by the time we finished (would have liked to buy a hat!), the cart barn staff was only minimally helpful. And the starter...he did allow us as a twosome to go out ahead of a late foursome (thanks!), but he was unfriendly otherwise. Skip it, and play the Wailea Courses - which are also in great condition (and great value) and the staff are overwhelmingly friendly.

What a magnificent setting for a golf course! The pro shop is well stocked with all kinds of choices for men and women.. hats, shirts, women's fashion apparel, and golf equipment. Staff in the shop and at the carts was friendly and welcoming. Be sure to pick up Kapalua tees and ball markers before you go to the range. Every golf hole is a picture! The fairways and greens were well kept. We played in the morning, hoping the wind would be calmer, but by the back nine, the wind was howling. Not sure you can do anything about that but enjoy it and bring lots of balls! The restaurant across from the pro shop is a great place to finish up with a sandwich and a beer!

Although this Kapalua Bay Golf course is pricy, it is the best manicured and staffed venue on Maui. 15 months ago they moved the Bay Course check in back to the original Village Course check in next to Taverna Restaurant. The Pineapple Grill is now closed. Tennis courts are still open. Therefore, the Bay Course layout numerical sequence has been adjusted appropriately. The greens are very well kept and pretty true to roll. Play Black back tees for champion length or further up for Silver Resort high handicapper, like me.

Our round at Kapalua is one of my all-time favorite golfing memories. It's up there with bucket-list courses like the Old Course at St. Andrews and Pebble Beach. In several ways, I enjoyed our round at Kapalua more than I did our round at Pebble. The ocean and island views were just incredible. This is such a beautiful place. Truly paradise. My dad and I played the Plantation Course before the 2019 renovation, on a Monday in early August. We rode and were paired up with another father-son duo, from Southern California. We didn't have caddies, but that was okay. The father in the other group had played this course before and gave us some tips. I parred the first hole out the gate. We played from the "Resort" (white) tees where the course measures 6,019 yards with a 71.5/132 rating/slope, par 73. It was challenging and the wind didn't help. Currently, this is the only par-73 course on the PGA Tour. The Plantation Course has hosted the Tournament of Champions since 1999. The course opened in 1991 and was co-designed by Ben Crenshaw, who also took part in the 2019 refresh. From the "Championship" (black) tees, the course comes in at a whopping 7,411 yards with a 77.2/144 rating/slope. I ended up shooting a 102 (+29) which I was okay with given my skill level, the difficulty of the course, and it was my first time playing it. Kapalua is situated on the northwest coast of Maui. Most of the Plantation Course holes have views of the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i. In general, the course is gently hilly and undulating with plenty of elevation changes. You have to hit a lot of uphill and downhill shots. The layout feels "wide open" in that fairways are wide and accepting. You can really smash some tee shots out here, particularly on the final two holes. The 17th is a downhill par-4 that makes almost a 90-degree turn to the left on the approach. The 18th is a long, downward-sloping, dogleg-left par-5. My favorite hole was No. 11, a downhill par-3 with an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean and Moloka'i. The uphill holes can be a grind. Club up. If it's your first time playing this course, consider playing one set of tees forward than you normally do. Save your ego for another track. From tee to green, the course was in outstanding shape. It was in better condition than the Gold Course at Wailea which we had just played the day prior. Wailea was in great shape too; Kapalua was even better. The greens are big and the day we played, they rolled fast and true. Kapalua's greens were noticeably faster than Wailea's. There are two courses at Kapalua, this one and the Bay Course. The clubhouse is spacious and beautiful. Inside, they have the Tournament of Champions trophy on display as well as other tournament-related exhibits. The golf carts are outfitted with GPS for both courses. Wear plenty of sunscreen and remember to reapply. I'm good about sun protection and even I got burned on this course (very rare occurrence). The UV rays are stronger and more intense in Hawaii due to its proximity to the equator. "Kapa lua" in Hawaiian means "two borders." A looser translation is "arms embracing the sea." I'd love to come back and play this course again some day.

My wife and I feel very fortunate to have played both the Kapalua Bay Course and Kapalua's heralded Plantation Course during our recent stay on Maui. Without question, these two rounds of golf were the most scenic and enjoyable 5-Star rounds of our lives. That is saying something considering we've played some spectacular golf all over the world including the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland. Kapalua's courses provide almost countless dramatic elevation changes which in turn offer unparalleled views of the Pacific Ocean and other Hawaiian Islands across the water. The Plantation Course (with its unique Par 73 and a whopping 7,596 yards from the championship tees) hosts the annual professional Tournament of Champions each January. In order to qualify for the tourney, the pros must have won at least one professional event event during the past year. Both Kapalua courses are located on the remote and mountainous North Shore of Maui and can therefore experience high winds off the ocean. We had fun battling strong winds consistently during both rounds. Kapalua stands as one of the the most scenic golf experiences you'll likely ever encounter. We will definitely be back again to test our games on the North Shore of Maui.

Lives up to the reputation. The Plantation Course at Kapalua is one of the PGA Tour's legendary venues, and it's truly a bucket list course for most people to play. It's pretty cool to go and experience the same place that has been the venue for so many legendary moments in golf. The layout is great, the design is interesting and extremely challenging. The wind, slope, greens, all add to the fun. The service at Kapalua is second to none. All of the staff we encountered were courteous and friendly and treat you like royalty. Make sure to go check out the locker room and see the photos of past Champions. Can't wait to play here again soon.

The Bay Course is one of my favorite golf courses. From the friendly and efficient staff to the beautiful views and a well maintained course. I play early in the morning to avoid the heat and potential slow play. The women's tee boxes could be in a bit better shape and I'd love par 4's to be no longer than 300 yds but neither of these are really significant issues. I always purchase one of the specials that allows you to play 3 days within a 7 day period, full use of the range and putting greens, and a 30 minute lesson. Although the course is expensive in my book it is well worth the cost. Enjoy!

Challenging, and beautiful. Being a golfer it's worth the money to play there. Budget it into your trip. $$$.

The staff was exceptional. Custom bag tag on arrival was a nice touch. The course on the other hand needs some love. supremely dry, brown patches from "repair" were everywhere and the greens were like velcro that had sand in it. nothing can stop the views it's incredible but for $200 the course should be in much better shape. 18 was a weird finishing hole after such dramatic views on the 2 previous holes and the rest of the course.

I was on vacation there 3 weeks ago and played the Bay Course. I mistakenly left a 60 degree wedge and discovered that 2 days later when I was already home. I called and verified they had the wedge there and would mail it to me. Took my address and told me it would be mailed ASAP. In the time since, it has not arrived and when I call them back, they claim it was not there and never was. I have also left several messages that never go answered. Its a shame cause I loved the course and I know it was my fault for leaving it but don't claim to be mailing it and then change all that and further deny it was there.

Beautiful location and the food was very good! Scenery is breathtaking. Prices were very reasonable, almost comparison to Slappy Cakes and the food was much better.

Negative star!! Don't get me wrong the Bay course is beautiful, but is it worth the money? Not a single non-resident will say yes. Have my family visiting and they both paid 300+. On the 8th hole we had to wait 6 minutes for sprinklers to cross our tee box only to get the rangers yelling at us about being behind. We let 4 groups pass us to try to enjoy each other's company and take once in a lifetime pics. Work in a resort down the street and hate that I actually bring business to a very non deserving place. Keep ripping ppl off and pushing the pace relying on the view while everyone else spots the horrible customer service!

Apart from rude Coffee cafe Lady, it was amazing! Beautiful well groomed course with great staff, very courteous and helpful. Will come again for sure.

Great course but zero on course ranger presence. Every hole is a wait ... we have 4 groups on #6! Can't the management speed things up ...?

Beautiful course as advertised. However if you are a golf nerd or golf enthusiast please be warned this is a vacation destination and you will get out with people who don't know how to golf or don't care about golf very much. I just finished my round and for the price the experience was very not worth it. I played as a single as my wife had a spa day. I show up and get paired with another single and a couple but the wife wasn't playing, or I thought. She ended up taking a few jacks here and there. Also on hole 6-7 the other single's wife got dropped off by the pro. Again not playing but riding. So now im paired with two couples who talked a lot and stood in my way numerous times. Also both wife's at different points took phone calls. One was a FaceTime very loud. I had my ball played by another person 3x during the round as well. Even though the balls were different types and different numbers and the numbers were different colors. He did this 3x. I mean the course was great and views were great but I didn't pay half a grand to be the fifth wheel in a very unprofessional round

Bay Course Unfortunately the Plantation was closed.. we played the Bay Course. Not fun. Extremely slow play two days in a row. Some nice views though!

Even with the beautiful scenery, the slow pace and lack of service made it a poor experience. Probably won't come back given this was the second time in a row this has happened. Got stuck behind a slow 4some that was loud and didn't have any golf etiquette. The Marshall came up to us multIple times to apologize but never once asked the group to speed up or let us pass. Even wHen we asked the Marshall to speed them up he refused and said he didn't want to offend them because they were resort guests. Ended up being a 6 hour round with a wait on every single hole. Will try other courses next time I am in town.

Played the Kapalua bay course on May 7th. Course was beautiful. Fairways and traps good condition. But the greens were the worst greens I've ever played on. It was like putting on a shag carpet rug. You needed a croquet mallet to get it 15 feet. Normally I would not complain but for $200. Definitely not worth it. They should offer a discount til they get the greens in some type of shape

The Plantation Course is likely the greatest golf course in the world. Incredible views, challenging and interesting holes and course conditions that are second to none. Johnny, the attendant who helped us upon arrival and departure was friendly and down to earth and gave us excellent service. The starter, a friendly man from New Jersey, was also very helpful and welcoming. The whole experience is definitely expensive but worth the money. The Plantation House restaurant is also delicious and offers amazing views.

Fantastic course, AMAZING staff! These guys went above and beyond to make sure our experience was great. From having the starter teach us about the greens on the course to the other staff members cleaning our clubs, laying out the course for us and even creating custom bag tags from Kapalua. It was an amazing experience, highly recommended.

The course was laid out perfectly ..... BUT. Someone decided in the last year( I come every summer ) to restate the holes. And move club house. Now it has an unorganized feel to it. Choppy. Weeds at the old club house. Chickens running loose on holes. Eating Mangos on ground. No water. No a ball washer in cart or at tees. The old restaurant called pineapple grill is a maids building!!! Leaves you having a complete let down. Won't be back to golf. Beach only!!!!

Super expensive and extremely poor course management. Round took 5 hours and 20 minutes. Played behind a group that refused to play faster or let us play at through. Marshalls are nice but useless. We won't be back for certain.

Really awful experience. Beautiful scenery. Scored decent. But the management was a disaster, course was in rough shape, and beyond slow play. Didn't have cart or clubs ready. Made me re-enter all the info they gathered at booking. They forgot to give me the balls I purchased, so they sent someone back to get them, meanwhile sent out another group directly in front of us and sandwiched is halfway between two groups, creating a 4 hour mess. Harassed by another golfer midway through the round and Marshall refused to handle by letting us move to another slot to get away from the harassment because they were "full" for the next couple days. Really, really expensive to boot. Pass on this one and find a course hungry for business. Hard to have a bad experience in Maui but they managed to do it. Low point of the Maui visit so far.

I have played several golf course across the western US, and the Plantation Course was far and away the hardest and best place I have ever played, the staff was very friendly, and the starter was so awesome! The layout of the course was very well suited for my game! I would hate to walk that course, like the pros have to, but I would do it, if I didn't have to carry my clubs! Hahaha I will be back again!

I've played the Bay course many times. This has been my second poor experience in a row. My group followed and obnoxious for someone who was slow disrespectful to the game and very loud. The Marshall followed them around and said nothing to them. Apologize to us repeatedly. Never the less thEy were not speeded up as they were staying at the resort. Strike three. Will play elsewhere.

There used to be 3 courses here, Plantation, Bay and Village but they shut the Village course a number of years ago. We were back there in December and this time brought my step father-in-law who is a huge golfer and couldn't wait to play. We played the Bay course and was disappointed. They moved the clubhouse which changed the hole numbering layout. Not a big deal, but the finish on the "new 18th" isn't as dramatic. What was really disappointing is that after being talked into using the golf cart scoring system we lost all our scores as we putted on 18. Even more disappointing was how management responded, which was "yeah that's been happening" and the course manager's "you must have gotten too close to the #1 tee box" which we didn't do. Given the price to play, I expected more.
