"El Prado, a grand hotel that stands as a testimony to Barranquilla’s golden days as Colombia’s gateway to the world, is now on the nation’s registry of historic places. When it opened in 1930, it boasted of being the first luxury lodging in Colombia , with private bathrooms and telephones in every room. Narcotraficante interests acquired the property in the 1980s and made it an operations center, which drove away legitimate guests. But after government seizure and decades of decline, things are once again on the upswing. Don’t miss the expansive pool and its shady vegetation, especially when the mercury soars (day passes are available). And afternoon aperitifs or lunches beneath these palms are always a welcome respite. By Travesías"

This is a well maintained older hotel. I found it to be clean quiet, and with good service. ||If you have a lot of electrical devices you might struggle, as being older, there wasn’t a ton of electrical outlets, but it worked fine for my needs.||The A/C was very functional and not noisy like some places, and it kept the room at the desired temperature.||Good tv with access to American channels and Netflix.||A great pool for laps but maybe not so good for small children as most is meter deep or more. Lots of lounge chairs.||The breakfast buffet was pretty good with a fair variety and well staffed, with good service.||The restaurant didn’t impress me much, and I thought it over priced, but not to say it was bad. ||There’s a pizza place in the hotel too, which appeared to be very popular with the locals, though I would describe it as mediocre.||There are lots of restaurants within walking distance, so lots of options. A shout out to two; Pescaye and Capital. Pescaye has great fish and also popular with the locals. Capital is a burger joint with a few options. I enjoyed both places.||In all I liked this hotel, and I wouldn’t hesitate to stay again. I thought it was good value.

The building is astonishing! Probably one of the most impressive of the city. However, service standards are quite low for the price you pay: administrative procedures are outdated and infrastructure needs improvement. Information provided by phone may vary when you get there. Food is great, especially the local one, but be ready to pay U$ 18 for a tequila shot poured on a plastic cup and wait 40mins for the bill.

The property is spectacular, the location very good, but sadly the hotel is living on memories. The rooms are supposedly updated, so I am glad I had a new room. Any room without normal air conditioning in this part of the world is crazy. I have been in and out of Colombia now for 9 years and used many hotels. I had a portable air conditioner in my room! I had a sink where the pop up did not work and was just left in the counter, making it impossible to fill the sink with water. On a personal note, I do not understand why they give you bar soap, but no dish to put the soap on?|The breakfast was varied, but like a lot of Colombia, was cold. You can order fresh eggs, and that does help. They have one toaster that looks as though it has been here since the hotel opened, and only a part of that worked. Surely someone should recognize that, and repair or maybe even buy a new one. Not good enough. The local foods should be labeled for the guests. There were a variety of empanadas, but it was pot luck as to what was inside. The positives are the venue and the grounds, as they are beautiful. 5 star venue/property, 4 star location, 2 star hotel! When you can book bed and breakfast in a so-called 5 star property for under $75 a night, I guess that tells the story.

The hotel El Prado is situated right off a main street and finding transportation is very easy. Everything you'd want to see is about 20 mins or so away or less. The Hotel El Prado has a historic vibe to it. The main common areas are well kept. The pool is basic but it is very nice at night with the lighting they have placed in it. The bar next to the pool is a nice spot to hang out at and it is clean. The downside... The rooms. It does not matter if you get a basic room, executive suite or presidential. The rooms are horrible. You can smell the mold and our comforter fought to stay dry and felt like it was borderline wet. Partly because it is very humid in Barranquilla and the rooms are kept very cold. The minute you adjust the temperature, you're trying your best to fight moisture in the room and a build up of a slippery wet floor. I would have to lay a towel on the floor and wipe it myself to dry it off so my kids would not slip and fall. There is no point in complaining because the staff is actually very nice and were helpful. But with so many new hotels popping up in Barranquilla, there really is no point in staying here and battle the smells of mold and moisture in the rooms. I'd say find another place which is actually closer to the newer part of Barranquilla where you'll have access to the mall, restaurants and other known hot-spots. For a few dollars more, you can get a very nice hotel that is not battling age.

Please do not book your stay here. Other than the hair salon, the rest of the property is awful. Here are a few things to highlight It's outdated. No AC in common areas. Rooms are basic/depending on how much you pay, you will end up on their least renovated side, far away from the amenities. I caught a stomach bug (truly considered going to the hospital) after eating at their pool bar. They showed ZERO empathy and told us too bad if I got sick! Red flag: My sandals went missing in my room & the property refuses to address my concern. I have received invalid email addresses and others that will not respond.

I stay in hotels almost half the year so I have a lot to compare to at that price point, and this was very disappointing. It started off bad…the check-in took over a hour. Then the #1 most important thing to me is internet-which was terrible in the room. I had to go to the outdoor cafe (no A/C) to use a mediocre internet. By the evening, I’d already killed 2 mosquitos in the room. The bathroom was extremely tiny, not sure how they squeezed a shower in it. I was wanting to stay the week, but wanted to test out 1 night first- glad I did…It was not a good value exchange- will not come back here- the only thing going for this is the history & style of the hotel, and the buffet wasn’t too bad. PROS: historic building, buffet breakfast CONS: good internet hard to find

Disappointing Stay - Poorly Maintained and Chaotic Environment!!!! I was very disappointed with my recent stay at this hotel. While the building itself has historical charm, it is unfortunately very poorly maintained. The common areas and rooms were dirty, and everything felt neglected and unattended. The breakfast was also a letdown - extremely limited selection and not up to the standard one would expect from a hotel of this category. What made the experience worse was the complete lack of transparency at check-in. We were not informed that multiple weddings would be hosted on-site during our stay. Loud music blared late into the night, making it impossible to rest — a major issue as I came specifically for a medical treatment and was hoping for a peaceful environment. Additionally, the check-out process was chaotic. Only one staff member was serving a large group, and during this time, two older men aggressively cut in front of me in line. When I calmly pointed out it was my turn, one of them erupted in a frightening verbal outburst, even yelling at his wife. Shockingly, hotel security did absolutely nothing to intervene or support me or others in line. I am escalating this incident as it was deeply upsetting and unacceptable. This stay did not meet even the most basic expectations for cleanliness, order, or guest safety. I sincerely hope management addresses these issues so future travelers don’t face the same experience.
