Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze

This was one of the most exciting stops on our art tour in Florence. While everyone thinks of the Statue of David when they hear the name of this museum, there is so much more waiting for you inside. Of course, seeing Michelangelo’s massive and flawless David in person is a unique feeling; the muscle details and the expression in his eyes are truly mesmerizing. One of the most surprising parts of the museum for me was the Musical Instruments section. There is an incredible collection, ranging from Stradivarius violins to very old pianos. It's a special section that shows art is not just about sculpture and painting. Regarding tickets and prices: The entrance fee is around €16 (it can reach €20 with the reservation fee). I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance because there is always a very long queue at the door. We had our tickets ready to avoid that wait. It is worth every penny to see David and get lost among those historic musical instruments.

Breathtaking in person. Highly advise to reserve a time ahead to not have to wait in long line. In addition to David, there are a very nice collection of paintings and I really enjoyed the musical instrument display, and the room full of cast sculptures. David is so much bigger in person than you'd think, the room is large enough for you to get close and really get a good view. Must see in Florence.

What an incredible galleria! The art museum houses numerous sculptures, Florentine paintings and museum of musical instruments. The marvelous Michelangelo’s David was moved from the Piazza Della Signoria in 1873. The galleria was originally the Academy of Fine Arts, opening in 1784 for students. It was crowded, but it flowed nicely because it was open.

Amazing history that has been astonishingly preserved. Tons of exhibits to see and worth every second! David is breathing as his size cannot be appreciated until you see him in person.

Wow. This museum is amazing. The collection of musical instruments surprised me. I have never seen instruments so old. Now I know the true meaning of “upright piano.” The religious art is text book — meaning this is the art in my art history text books! Seeing it in real life is inspiring. The quality of craftsmanship and creativity mesmerized me. Even the restoration I found intriguing- like removing the fur wrap from Eve. If you visit Florence, the Accadamia is a must see. And then there is David. David alone is a reason to go.

The Galleria dell'Accademia is an absolute must-visit, primarily to witness the sheer scale and mastery of Michelangelo's David, which truly dominates the room. However, do not overlook the Department of Musical Instruments; it was a surprising highlight that houses an incredible collection, including a genuine Stradivarius. While the David is the main attraction, the chance to see such rare historic instruments added a wonderful layer of depth to our visit.

To see David “in the stone” is breathtaking. To see Michelangelo’s prisoners beforehand is great context to see how a true master can visualise a sculpture from a simple hewn block of marble. The size of the sculpture and the sheer perfection of proportions and realism is mind blowing. Don’t ever visit Firenze and not see David…

Interesting museum. Obviously that David is the biggest sculpture I’ve ever seen. There are plenty of paintings and even a room with an ancient musical instruments. The paintings are mostly about Jesus and Mary. The entrance is €20 but if you get the advance one is €24.
