The Best Places in Europe to Soak Up the Winter Sun

"Best for: Low-season glitzDecember temperature range: 43-61°F Granted, you won’t be donning swimwear on Plage des Ponchettes or spotting A-listers in Nice's beach clubs come December. However, with up to nine hours of sunshine a day, the winter months are ideal for exploring Nice and the surrounding French Riviera towns—without the crowds that flock here each summer. Check out the Christmas village at Place Massena in Nice, spot the pop-up nativity scenes around the city, or pop to glitzy Monaco for a lavish lunch and glide around the ice rink. Where to stay: Anantara Plaza Nice is a luxe urban oasis centrally located for sightseeing and sunny lunches along the promenade. There’s a glamorous rooftop terrace for sea views and destination restaurants ideal for those occasional rainy nights. A version of this article originally appeared on Condé Nast Traveller." - David Annand, Connor Sturges

"At five minutes before noon every day, the uniformedCarabiniers du Prince performa ceremonial changing of the guard in front ofMonaco'spalace. Though theroyal family still lives in the palace, much of the year there are tours that visit a selection of state apartments, each room dripping with gilt, draped in silk, and decorated with the vast collection of artwork and furniturecollectedby the House of Grimaldi since it began in 1160.As devoted patrons of the arts, the royal familyhosts classical music concerts on the palace grounds every summer. Tickets to see Prince Albert II’s jaw-droppingly impressive collection of antique cars are also available."

A lifetime experience while visiting from California. Seeing the Changing of the Guard in front of the Prince’s Palace was truly special and something I will always remember. I do wish I had visited during the period when interior tours are open, but even from the outside, the palace is absolutely stunning. The views overlooking the hillside and harbor, along with the historic setting, make it incredibly beautiful and meaningful. A must-see landmark in Monaco — full of history, elegance, and unforgettable scenery.

I was moved by the scale and grandeur of the palace. Since the prince currently resides there, I can see the changing ceremonies of the guards. The path up is beautiful, but the view from the summit is truly the best. If you are traveling in Monaco, I highly recommend it as a must-visit place.

We loved our visit here at the end of November. The weather was amazing, the whole area around the palace was so clean and the gardens overlooking the Med were simply the best views we’ve ever had x

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Place du Palais Princier – Monaco We didn’t go inside the palace, but the square itself is absolutely beautiful! Charming little streets with nice shops, bars, and restaurants — all at reasonable prices (especially for Monaco!). The view over the bay and the small yacht harbor is truly spectacular. It’s best explored on foot. At 11:55 a.m. you can watch the changing of the guard — quite fun to see, though it gets crowded and the area is roped off. Still, definitely worth a visit when in Monaco!

Its a historic landmark offering stunning panoramic views of the city and harbor. Easily accessible by a short uphill walk, it beautifully showcases Monaco’s royal heritage and rich history. The palace courtyard and surroundings are open to visitors free of charge, making it a must-see attraction for anyone exploring the principality.

Honestly, it’s not the most beautiful palace you’ve ever seen, but the changing of the guard ceremony is fun and it’s a perfect start to entering the old town on top of the hill. Amazing views.

The Prince's Palace of Monaco is the Magnificent Residence of the Prince Albert and the Royal Family. Inside the Prince's Palace of Monaco, you can visit the publicly accessible Grand Apartments, which feature opulent state rooms like the Hercules Gallery, Hall of Mirrors, Throne Room, and Louis XV Salon, all decorated with period furniture, frescoes, tapestries, and artwork. Visitors can also see the Palatine Chapel and admire the Court of Honour. Beyond the state apartments, the palace grounds contain the Napoleonic Museum, a Car Collection, and the Palace Archives. A must see if in Monaco! I took the Hop on & Hop off bus tour to the Palace and in my opinion is the best way to get up there if you're a tourist! I actually got off the bus twice at this particular stop because it is so SPECTACULAR! Best views of Monaco. This is not a place, it's a DREAM! It could get very windy but that's all part of the allure. If you're traveling solo, then a selfie stick is your best friend. You'll get AMAZING shots. Other than the Palace, there are a few small places to eat and some souvenirs vendors, oh there was like some changing of the guard kinda protocol that took place for a few.
