"Venado Caves Get down and dirty on an unforgettable spelunking experience at the Venado Caves, 45 minutes from La Fortuna. The caves were formed some 15 to 20 million years ago by tectonic shifting and erosion from underground streams. In them, you’ll see stalagmites and stalactites galore, and get the chance to check out colorful frogs and fascinating marine fossils and learn about the bat communities hanging right over your head. The experience is real (and really humid)—so wise adventurers bring insect repellent, knee pads, and an extra change of clothes. Waterproof your camera, too. By Travesías"

Amazing caverns. The tour guide was fantastic and took us through as many tighter tunnels as we were comfortable with (we did them all, even through running and falling water). He knew a lot about the caves, minerals, and bats and other critters found there. Highly recommended!!

Best experience I've had on my Costa Rica trip! This was my first time caving and I was in awe of the cave and tour. My wife and her son are experienced cavers and they too loved the cave. Guide was terrific and meeting the owner Pam and hearing her story of this long time family business was so nice. I highly recommend this experience if you want an amazing adventure!

A good adventure into the accessible part of this huge cave system. The guide I had Maurice was fantastic and had real passion for caving and spelunking. Tours were at 10am 12 noon and 2pm.

The best experience we had in Costa Rica, hands down. It was just the perfect mixture of adventure, fun, and knowledge of the caves. We were provided with all the equipment upon arrival and I had no idea this cave would be so much fun to explore. We booked directly through their website/WhatsApp and then drove ourselves to the cave from La Fortuna which is a well paved road all the way until the entrance. It was the best value out of all the activities we did while in the country, highly recommend.

This is a MUST activity! I only stumbled upon this place via Google maps because Rio Celeste roads were flooded and i had to detour. Best accidental find ever. Easy to book, 1 hour taxi will cost less than $20usd. Some parts of the cave were scary like climbing a 8 foot section. But crawling through 1 feet of water in a 3 foot space was epic. Our guide was very helpful and descriptive. Book in advance.

Fantastic. Went with two kids 12 and 9, and, despite being a little scared at first, they loved it! Incredible place filled with bats and spiders. Totally fascinating and exhilarating. Guides were friendly and great

We went to Venado Caves with my family in August 2025. The entire team deserves 5 Stars for the entire experience and patience. I would like to especially thank WILMER 👍 for making my kids feel safe and comfortable in the cave. He was very knowledgeable and explained the history and critters. The caves / birth canal is fully worth exploring. The caves do require some physical agility so be sure to get down on all fours and crawl through narrow passeges. If your clothes don't get drenched then you are not doing something right 😁. You will also be climbing up and down 2-3 meters in dark. You will have hard hat with lights. Recommendation: - make reservations in advance .. carry cash for faster transaction. I was able to use credit card but it took some - they have shower facility with soap (cold water) but you need to bring your own towel. - You shouldn't take car keys, purse, wallet, passport, or anything that may get damaged due to water immereion. - Take head or wrist mounted action camera, or cell phone with waterproof cover - however your pix may not come out well due to darkness. - I definitely recommend having lunch at the facility - and they had plenty of options for vegetarian. They dessert and fresh guava juice were tasty. Thanks again for a unique experience.

Wow!! Do not hesitate to visit these caves if you're not claustrophobic. I can't believe they're not more of a major attraction near La Fortuna. Just 1 hour drive away. Tips: We brought two young kids and they loved it. We all more swimsuits (+ rash guards and shorts) and kids wore wetsuits (very useful to avoid scrapes). Wear your own water shoes (we had close-toed water sandals), as I hear the rubber boots aren't comfortable. Bring a change of clothes and towel as they have several showers and shower gel. Book the 10 am tour to see more bats. They make you wear a mask to avoid inhalation if bat poo. All tight squeazes in the cave are optional, but so fun!! You will get wet (crawling in water at one point, walking under falling water). You will get muddy. We saw so many bats and some spiders. We also saw seashell fossils. And outside the cave we saw an owl and howler monkey, plus many leaf cutter ants. Our tour guide Mauricio (sp?) was great. We didn't order the lunch as we had our own food. They also have a pool we didn't try out.
