On the Grid : Word of Mouth

"This almost didn’t make it to the guide it’s so good, as sharing it with more people would only make it more impossible to get a seat on the weekends. Since 2007 they’ve been serving the best breakfast and brunch food on Leith Walk. Come for the eggs benedict once, and you’ll know why. Return for the croque madame and congratulations, you’re now a regular. Word of Mouth bake all their own cakes and pastries too - and if that’s not enough they roast eight blends of their own coffee. With only around eight table inside, and a few on the pavement outside when the weather is right, getting seated can be a challenge - but it’s certainly worth the wait. Service is always with a genuine smile, be sure to ask Roshi for a chai latte. Just keep it between us, K?" - fourcolourblack

Word of Mouth are a lovely breakfast diner and they do breakfast exceedingly well. I've visited a few times and they consistently have very attentive staff who work swiftly and diligently. Their coffee is very good - they vary from time to time but their americanos are smooth with a sweet, nutty undertone. Their eggs are a big standout, always cooked perfectly, and their baked goods are tasty. Only criticism I'd have is they could spare some more bacon here and there between the eggs benedict or the full breakfast. But this doesn't dampen the quality of the food itself, cooked to a high standard and delivered by friendly and welcoming staff.

This place is amazing. They serve nice plate of local breakfast. Everything is delicious. This is a small place with a nice atmosphere, staff is amazingly busy but never stops smiling. The full breakfast is 12,95£ , may be seen expensive for a breakfast but in Edinburgh, a meal starts from much more than this. Definitely worth to have breakfast here.

Cozy and welcoming little café-bar. The coffee was excellent, and the croissants with ham and cheese were delicious. The staff was very friendly, making the experience even better. A great place to stop by for a relaxed bite.

I ordered a ham and cheese croissant knowing full well that I’d be taking out the ham (I don’t eat meat) and giving it to my husband. But the cook saw it and just made me another one with no ham in it, despite my protests. There’s a photo evidence of it. And boy, was it delicious!!!

I just popped in for a take away coffee. Turns out it was the best cup of coffee I have had in a long while. Definitely worth the extra 50p compared to the Starbucks and Pret across the road. Staff are lovely, the food looked amazing I will definitely be back to try the veggie croque monsieur which was being plated up for another lucky person while I was there. Would definitely recommend a visit

A great café serving a good range of brunch and other dishes, attentive service and good gluten free and veggie options.

Best coffee so far I found here in Edinburgh - coffee is directly roasted on the spot, and you can have a coffee-talk with the owner himself :) Cappuccino is done in perfection 🫶rarely to find! Espresso notes: sweet & fruity aroma, light & elegant, nice smooth consistency, light roast aromatics & low bitterness, great balance. Simply great coffee.

I would not say it is the best Scottish breakfast I ever had but it was still really good. Though my friend had an amazing Croque Monsieur. The service and vibe were great.
