20 Ice Cream Shops in the U.S. with The Most Unique Flavors - AFAR

"An Anchorage shop that emphasizes local sourcing and Alaskan storytelling through flavor names and ingredients — examples include Redoubts Revenge (chocolate with cayenne, cinnamon, and chocolate shards), housemade honeycomb, locally roasted coffee, garden rhubarb and beets from customers, and a spiced homemade waffle cone paired with a Baked Alaska topped with toasted marshmallow fluff." - Alina Polishuk

"Take your place in line, check the street sign to see what the flavors of the week are (or send somebody up to the shop door to take a peek), and start planning your order. Most of Wild Scoops' ice creams are made with locally sourced ingredients. Even Alaska-made potato chips make an appearance. Are you a fan of coffee ice cream? Then don’t even play around. Order up a coffee ice cream baked Alaska . They’ll fill a freshly made waffle cone with the sweet cold joy, swirl marshmallow on top, and hit it with a mini blowtorch. You’ll be back for more the next day."

I saw some people walking around with these cones that looked and smelled delicious so I had to try one. I had the Baked Alaska (flamed marshmallow flush) on chocolate ice cream and it was amazing. The waffle cone was perfect too, it’s delicate and crispy and has a great flavor. I might have to go again tomorrow for seconds.

Google
Literally so good! I was in Alaska for 5 days. And came here 3 times and tried 4 of the flavors. The Sitka swirl was definitly best paired with the baked Alaska cone. But the rhubarb crumble was soooo good also! Just not AS good with the baked Alaska.

Stopped by for a quick dessert after having dinner. There were about 10 people in line down the sidewalk, but was up to the front within 5 minutes as they were very efficient with a simplified menu and ordering process. The sign out front explains the simple process of picking your flavor, size, and vessel. There were about 10 flavors to choose from, 3 sizes, 1 cup or 3 cones for the vessel. Ordered 3 single scoops in cones with 1 having the toasted marshmallow on top. Ice cream was very good as it was creamy, smooth, and not overly sweet. Tasted just like homemade ice cream. There's no inside sitting area, so most just stand on the sidewalk and eat their ice cream. I wanted to come back on another day as it was that good, but ran out of time.

Google
Don't know why, but this is one of the best ice cream I ever had! Super creamy, but not too sweet. Make sure to try the whipped marshmallows on top. We had caramel one and camp fire one. Both are really good.. Must try!!

Linda S.

Google
We went there twice! I had the blueberry both times! It was amazing! Best homemade ice cream ever! Service was great too!

Steph D

Google
It was good ice cream, but we ordered a bunch of kiddie sizes to try a few flavors and no one bothered to let us know we could try them beforehand or get a flight. That would have been useful to know, and it was clear what we were doing.. also tried the baked alaska with marshmallow on top. That was good but the waffle cone was awful. Would like the marshmallow on cup if I went back.

Alan V.

Google
Amazing ice cream with cool funky flavors which you can not find anywhere else to choose from, including non-dairy/vegan options with an opportunity to sample before you buy at good prices. They also change their flavors once in a while but there will always be something exciting to try. I tried the spruce tip ice cream, spiced hibiscus sorbet (both were good) and their off trail chocolate which was amazing.

Google
The busiest and most popular attraction in town … with good reason! There is a continuous long queue here from 8pm onwards, but it’s so worth the wait. They offer some local favourites and some unique flavours, but all are perfectly made and served. The Campfire S’mores was just sensational!!! And the Sitka Swirl was so good too. The cookie ice cream sandwiches looked so good too - will definitely trying that next time! Highly recommended.

Yelp
Got to experience this absolutely amazing ice cream shop on vacation. They have some of the most amazing selections of homemade ice creams and then to add the Alaskan bake on top!? (Marshmallow creme fluff that is toasted). The place is had a line outside the door, for good reason. Inside was adorable and quaint, with plenty of room to maneuver about. Staff were busy and on it, but also patient with customers. I personally love the Sitka Swirl and Fireweed ice cream flavors. The Sitka has a delicious salted caramel flavor, while the Fireweed was very floral and sweet. I recommend 15/10

Yelp
Fantastic ice cream and I'm devastated that I won't be able to get it again for the foreseeable future, as I was in Alaska on a work trip. I'm not ashamed to say I came a lot the week I was visiting Anchorage. No seating, and you order outside at the counter. I tried Sitka Swirl and Sunshine Club. They were both delicious - not too sweet, and great creamy texture - not icy. Their homemade caramel that's in the Sitka Swirl is phenomenal. It might be for the best that they're not located in California, because I would get their ice cream way too much. Sunshine Club has homemade lemon curd, which was fantastic and tart. It's combined with snickerdoodles and is such an indulgent treat. It would be even nicer if they had indoor seating, but alas. Highly recommend - fantastic.

Yelp
We visited Wild Scoops twice during our two days in Anchorage, so I guess that review speaks for itself. Our first visit was to the E Street walk-up. It looks like maybe it once was a walk-in, but this current setup works. The line was a few people deep but moved fast. I had a double scoop in a cup - the Wild Blueberry and Campfire (think s'mores ingredients). The Blueberry was smooth and delicious, and the Campfire was full of nibs and chunks. Also delicious and I'd have a hard time saying which I liked better. A double scoop is $8. Add $3.25 more and upgrade to "Baked Alaska-style," which is your scoops in a waffle cone with a toasted marshmallow topping. My daughter would like you to know that you won't regret it.

Yelp
Located in downtown Anchorage. A good place to stop for a treat. I had the rhubarb crumble. It was pretty sweet, but hit the spot on a hot day. The ice cream had a cinnamon taste to it. We ordered at the window and were immediately given our ice cream. The staff working the window were friendly. They have different size ice cream options and you can get it in a cup or a cone. They also have some other ice cream treats.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream in Anchorage. We stopped on our way from a cruise. Kids tried POG, Chocolate flavors. They liked them. We tried wildwood and blueberry flavors. All excellent. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Zack B.

Yelp
As whelmed as I was by my Campfire Smores flavored Ice cream from the Box Container stall outside 49th state brewing, mywife loved her vegan flavor. I did too. So much, we went back the next night to their more downtown location, where she got the same thing and I got the rhubarb crumble before walking back to our AirBNB. Both were amazing. Highly recommend if you're in anchorage

Yelp
This is a walk-up corner of heaven. Baked Alaska ice cream cones are divine! The ice cream is quality, the cones are crispy, and who doesn't love toasted marshmallow cream? Since it's a walk-up, the vibe is very summer, friendly, and welcoming. Service is as fast as the line allows. Worth it!
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
Yumm!!! They have some interesting flavors! I got to visit this place twice during my trip in Alaska and I like how the flavors also rotate. I tried the white raven which was similar to a cookies and cream and then I also tried the Sitka swirl which was really good with the caramel and sea salt! Make sure you try this spot if you're visiting Alaska!

Yelp
Arrived in the Land of the Midnight Sun right in time for the summer solstice where I am experiencing literally the longest day of the year. Sun rose at 4:21am and is suppose to set at 11:41pm in Anchorage. However, it doesn't truly get dark as twilight lingers for hours. What screams summer more than us screaming for ice cream for handcrafted Alaskan Wild Blueberry ice cream made from Wild AK blueberries after a walk on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail.
google avatar

Kelsey C.

Yelp
Long line but quick service! The marshmallow topping was so delicious and the ice cream was creamy.
google avatar

Cheyenne G.

Yelp
Very delicious and fun way to eat ice cream. The cashier was very nice and patient as I asked many questions! I tried the rhubarb baked Alaska. So yummy! To eliminate confusion, choose the ice cream flavor you want, the size of scoop and how many scoops, when you say baked Alaska that means the waffle cone with marshmallow fluff. I may have visited twice in one day
google avatar

Janis C.

Yelp
Best Ice cream flavors ever! Didn't even hurt my tummy that is how you know it's GOOD!
google avatar

Kristina I.

Yelp
I LOVED this ice cream! I was in search of fireweed ice cream when I visited Alaska and Wild Scoops delivered. It's such a nice floral, honey-ish flavor with a lovely pink color. I got it twice paired with the rhubarb crumble, which was a great flavor pairing. I'm not usually one for cones, so hear me when I say you shouldn't skip this one! It's slightly cinnamon-y and such a nice complement to the fireweed/rhubarb crumble fruity combo. I'd also strongly suggest the baked Alaska topping. This is a maximalist cone
google avatar

James N.

Yelp
Walk up window only with a somewhat limited flavor menu compared to the other location. Got the Sitka Swirl which was a nice salted caramel. It was good, didn't blow me away but it was the best one out of the flavors I tasted. Service was friendly, they let us sample a few flavors. Luckily there wasn't a big line or that could take a while with just one window. Paid street parking only and no where to sit down to eat the ice cream.
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
The ice is so good, lots of fun flavors! The root beer and s'mores were our favorites! The baked Alaska is a fun option!
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Heard about this place online & reviews were amazing so we decided to check it out & it was delicious!! Different homemade flavors & options like the baked Alaska (fired Marshmallow cream on top). A must try!
google avatar

Rick L.

Yelp
Local ice cream? Yes, please. Add in local flavors like Fireweed? Oh, we're in! We enjoyed our one stop at Wild Scoops during our few nights in Anchorage. My wife and I shared a small with Fireweed and Rhubarb Crumble. We hadn't seen these flavors anywhere else in the world at an ice cream shop so it was a delight to experience them. The fireweed was a unique Alaska-only flavor and the rhubarb crumble (our favorite of the two) was an indulgent treat! There are a number of other treats to try besides their daily flavors in cups or cones including sampler flights, "frozen nachos", and a Baked Alaska! Every time we walked by there was a line of varying lengths but it went fairly quickly so don't get turned off by that. It's a window front establishment so the line and service is on the street. They're open every day 12 noon to 10pm.

Adam L.

Yelp
Great ice cream at a reasonable price!! Service was fast and I would definitely come here again.
google avatar

Spaghe T.

Yelp
Really delicious ice cream. I loved the inventiveness of the flavors, and appreciated the local themes. Friendly and fast service. Nice to grab a waffle cone and walk to the nearby park to hear some music.
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
The off-trail chocolate flavor is awesome! Yummy! Highly recommend this shop. The best ice cream place in Anchorage
google avatar

Jamie M.

Yelp
Despite the cold and the wind I'm so glad I go to try Wild Scoops! The rock on the wild side flavor is so good and the baked Alaska topping was perfect! I can't wait to come back when the fireweed flavor is back :) got some stickers too! Fast service and friendly!
google avatar

Lisa J.

Yelp
I would give the Fireweed ice cream in a waffle cone 10 stars if possible! Do not miss this spot if you are in Anchorage!

Amanda K.

Yelp
Definitely get your waffle cone "baked Alaska style" aka melted marshmallow on top of your ice cream. Walk up with no line the majority of the time. Had live music when we were there so it was a nice place to stand and have an ice cream cone after dinner. Right beside 49th state brewing. Would 100% recommend

Alaura ..

Yelp
We got two regular scoops of chocolate ice cream, one with the shitty marshmallow burnt on it, and it came out to $14, I was flabbergasted, and the girl so confidently said oh it's just Alaska, in a very rude tone, I told her no it's not Alaska it's you guys, selling shitty overpriced ice cream, definitely won't be going again
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
Yes, its that good. Well worth the wait in line. Passes my "vanilla" test; if vanilla is creamy with solid vanilla flavor, almost always every flavor is good. Chocolate was great. Spruce Tips (which, freshly picked, became a staple snack on hikes) was very good. Every flavor we had on our multiple visits was enjoyed.

Cheryl H.

Yelp
The ice cream is delicious. What else can you say? They have a rhubarb crumble. That is my favorite. Of course they're all my favorite but that one I like the best.
google avatar

Rich J.

Yelp
Wild Scoops is an excellent source for your hand crafted ice cream when visiting Anchorage. I visited the little street side walk up operation next to the convention center several times when I was in town. There is no seating at this location, so just grab and go. They have a relatively small menu, but make up with unique and delicious flavors. I tried several flavors, and they all tasted excellent to me!
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
What a fun local ice cream shop! I'm so glad we walked by and decided to try the flavors. My fiancé and I wanted to try multiple flavors so we got one double scoop with the caramel swirl and their version of cookies and cream and another double scoop with the blueberry and rhubarb crumble. They have some unique flavors but my favorite was the cookies and cream. The ice cream was packed full of Oreos. My other favorite was the blueberry one - locally sourced and so fresh!! The rhubarb crumble was delicious because of the crumble part but there wasn't enough of the rhubarb for my liking. Definitely give this spot a visit. Even if the line looks long, it moves so quickly!
google avatar

Bianca T.

Yelp
My favorite ice cream shop of all time. You have to try the baked alaska cone--the combination of toasty marshmallow with the creamy ice cream is beyond amazing. Yummy vegan options as well like the Dreamwich ice cream sandwich. Fun and bright vibes and friendly service!
google avatar

Cassie M.

Yelp
I walked by this place about 3 times in one day before I finally decided to just wait in the line lol. Let me just say that there is a long line here for a reason but don't worry, the line actually moves pretty fast! Ice cream here was really yummy and I liked that they had fun and creative flavors. I can't remember the names but I got one with caramel swirls and a chocolate one and both flavors were perfect together. We opted for the baked Alaska on top because it was fitting for our Alaska trip and I surprisingly really liked that. Definitely skip dessert at the restaurant and come here instead!
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
This location is a small store so there's no place to sit inside, just order and get your ice cream on the go. There's spots nearby where you can sit on a nice day. Ice cream Campfire s'mores: I had a small kids size campfire s'mores and I want s'more. I'd recommend for the s'more lovers. The pieces of graham crackers & chocolate inside the delicious ice cream melted in my mouth and was perfect! I'll be back for some more ice cream on a warm day!
google avatar

Lorene R.

Yelp
Love that they have a spot downtown on E street and now in the parking lot near 49 Street Brewery. Fresh ingredients make their ice cream magical.
google avatar

Jacy J.

Yelp
Love this place every time we come! Such unique flavors, many of the flavors are exclusive to Alaska, you won't find anywhere else! You're able to ask for samples of any kind of the ice cream choices they have. The people working there are always so sweet! We try to go in the middle of the day because it can get busy around dinner time, but if you get there when it's quiet, it's so relaxing and absolutely wonderful!
google avatar

Danielle V.

Yelp
Came here because of all the great reviews and it did not disappoint! I had the sea salt caramel flavor with the torched marshmallow fluff. I would put that topper on anything it was so so good. Just a walk up window, so no seating available. Also, service was pretty slow, with only one couple in front of me I waited about 5 minutes for my cone.
google avatar

Samantha R.

Yelp
Always get the Alaskan baked on top. It's sooo yummy. The service is very quick as it's a to go window to order. Easy and off of one of the main streets to walk on.
google avatar

Brendie W.

Yelp
We went to the ship container location. It was a walk from the Captain Hook Hotel. We order the Alaskan Style and it was definitely hands down the best ice cream in Alaska!

E E.

Yelp
Get the baked Alaskan. It may be the most amazing dessert ever. Flambéed marshmallows? Incredible.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Wow was in anchorage for like 5 days and got ice cream here like 3 out of the 5 days! The Fireweed icecream!!! Yum! A sizable scoop and fast window service. It's everything an ice cream place should be!
google avatar

Erin D.

Yelp
Best ice cream in Anchorage! Highly recommend the Sitka Swirl if you like salted caramel.

Melissa D.

Yelp
Really good Oreo ice cream and amazing vanilla with salted Carmel. My husband got a cookie sandwich which he really liked as well. Nice to have this place at the bottom of the 49th State brewery.
google avatar

Afrin K.

Yelp
Solid ice cream spot in anchorage! Their flavors range from the typical to creative ones like rhubarb and oats. Ordered their kids size which was plenty for one person. Their service was great, letting us try different flavors. They have two locations, of which we tried both. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Subira J.

Yelp
This was my first time in Alaska, and I heard really great things about this ice cream shop so of course I had to try it out. I am following a plant-based diet, and have been for a really long time. So I was really excited when I saw that they had vegan options for choices. This location only had vegan cake batter, which was fine because it was delicious! I just feel like, and maybe this is because I'm a hackling dairy free person LMAO but I really feel like there should be at least three options for vegan people when going to an ice cream shop. A chocolate, a sorbet, and another one. Granted this was a smaller shop. But honestly it was still really good I cannot lie The waffle cone was so good, and of course I had to get the baked Alaska on top of my ice cream. Such great flavor, and it wasn't too heavy, this probably being that they mix two choices of plant-based milks when they do their formula for their vegan ice cream. I really enjoyed it. So much so that I went to the second location in Anchorage on the same day. I was really glad that both locations gave me the same experience. It seems like everyone who works there really like each other and that makes for a great customer experience in my opinion. 10 out of 10 would recommend, and dead. My friend went to Anchorage three days ago and of course I had to recommend wild scoops to her. She loved it. I am I'm excited to return on my next trip to Anchorage and look forward to baked Alaska on my ice cream!
google avatar

Alexander C.

Yelp
Rotating menu of fresh, local flavours. Loved the rhubarb almond cookie the most. It was a delicious combination of ingredients and would highly recommend. Also really liked the fireweed! Light floral notes with a touch of sweetness. Cashiers were super friendly and allowed us to taste some flavours too. The mouthfeel was a little icy for some of the vegan flavours but give them a try if that's your thing!

S K.

Yelp
There were so many flavors and all were delicious! I enjoyed the float which allowed a taste of 4 different flavors. The staff were pretty friendly as well.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Sooooo is this the best ice cream I ever had? No. Is this the best ice cream available in Anchorage? More than likely yes. My wife had the Pilot's Life for Me which she enjoyed and I had the Fruity Pebbles, which I mostly enjoyed. I love love love Fruity Pebbles ok. The flavor of the ice cream was great. The only issue I had was the texture of the frozen sogged out Fruity Pebbles in the ice cream. It was tough and chewy. When I was eating the ice cream, it felt like I was chewing on little tough pieces of rope. Now look, if you are in Anchorage and have a hankering for some ice cream and pass Wild Scoops and the line isn't very long at all, by all means help yourself and enjoy. But if the line is long or this is out of the way, you'll be ok to come back another time :)
google avatar

Dayana V.

Yelp
I love local shops and this is no different. For starters there isn't an indoor area- it's just a walk up window. The flavors are local and sounded delicious. I tried a sample of the black coffee and it was delicious. I was gonna get that and made a last minute game time decision and got the Sitka swirl. Great decision; however, I tried the lemon as well and wish I would've gotten that. No worries I'll be back for the lemon later.
google avatar

Smrithi S.

Yelp
I wanted ice cream and found Wild Scoops after a quick search, it wasn't far from where we were. There was a long line and a good 30+ min wait to get to the window to order. I got Chocolate and White Raven in a waffle cone. It was good ice cream, not the best I have ever had but it's worth the wait in line.
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
OMG this spot definitely lands near the top of my all-time favorite dessert spots! We stopped in twice and were able to try a good sampling of flavors - spruce tip, white raven (Oreo), pilots life, blueberry, almond jam cookie, s'mores, and Sitka swirl. Our favorites were pilots life, almond jam cookie, and spruce tip! The ice creams all tasted great, but the toasted marshmallow topping and crisp, cinnamon-y waffle cone are perfect complements! I highly recommend this spot and it will be one of my first stops when I come back!
google avatar

Having F.

Yelp
We had to try Wild Scoops after we saw them on Cohens Insta. We had Baked Alaska, White Raven, Sitka Swirl, and Wild Blueberry. All of them were absolutely delicious. We will be back soon!
