sketchy chinese place; big portions and cheap

desert rat stuff
Kowloon Chinese Restaurant

Tamara S.

Google
We stopped by Kowloon in Indio on Christmas Eve for Chinese takeout based on Google recommendations, and it absolutely did not disappoint. This is a small, family-owned restaurant, clearly focused on takeout. We ordered a generous spread: handmade egg rolls, sweet and sour pork, spicy beef lo mein, Kung Pao chicken, white rice, fried rice, and cheese rangoon. Overall, the portions were huge—easily about 50% more food than we typically get from our local Chinese restaurant for roughly the same price. Everything tasted fresh and well prepared, and the value was excellent. The standout dish was the Kung Pao chicken. It had the perfect level of heat, and the ingredients were noticeably fresh and flavorful. The lo mein was hearty and satisfying, the sweet and sour pork was classic and well done, and the egg rolls were clearly handmade, which made a big difference. The atmosphere when we picked up our order was very minimal, but the staff was warm and genuinely appreciative of the business, which added to the experience. For $60, we received three large entrées and an appetizer—enough food for multiple meals. If you’re looking for solid Chinese takeout, great value, and generous portions in the Indio area, Kowloon is absolutely worth a stop.

Google
Finally tried this place for authentic Chinese food which most people don't understand doesn't have a lot of flavor because that is for you to add. This hole in the wall restaurant is affordable and what you'll find in a real Chinatown especially being a family business. The quality of food and service is so far the best in CV. We had the delicious hot and sour soup, Singapore noodles and combination shrimp. Portions are big and everyone took food home. They had plenty of regulars and we will be back!

Google
@traveling_kupo Located this delicious Wor Won Ton soup in the city of Indio, California. Great place to pull over for some Chinese Food. The lunch specials are at a great deal, the soups are my favorite and the service is on point. Does get busy during lunch hours. But it is also the last great Chinese restaurant before heading east to Arizona, or South to El Centro, Mexicali area. A must try. lil parking, handicap access. But it is a must try location.

Google
Very tasty love the customer service and the crew came out very fast. I do recommend and I will return

Google
We tried this highly-rated hole-in-the-wall Chinese spot, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype. The 8 appetizer sampler was dry and lacked flavor, and the Mongolian beef was just meh. Tender beef, but a bland sauce. The Yang Chow fried rice was a little salty but still somehow flavorless, which was odd. It just didn’t come together like it should have. The portions were huge, which is usually a plus, but I wasn’t excited enough to keep eating. Service was fine, and I did enjoy the free soup they offered at the start, but that’s about it. Overall, this place didn’t impress, and I don’t think I’ll be back.

Google
I think this is the best Chinese Food in the Valley. My friend recommended it, and we went together . While trying to decide, a steaming plate, of Orange Chicken, was delivered to another table, and my decision was made! My friend chose Mongolian Beef and we shared dishes. The chicken was crunchie and sweet, with a kick,. So good! The beef was tender, and well seasoned, with a savory sauce. Huge portions! Friendly service. My latest favorite !

Google
Quaint, hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant owned by a humble family. It was sweet seeing the owner’s children running around, set a neat view into cultures making their living here through sharing cultural food. Unfortunately, though, the food was not very tasty. Portions were large, but I did not entirely LOVE any of the dishes we ordered (I added captions to the pictures of the dishes I remembered). The price was fair for how much food we got, but it definitely felt as though they valued quantity over quality. The interior was also very, very dark and the location is right off of the freeway exit. By no means is the outside or inside beautifully decorated, but again it seems like the owners are making do with what they have. There is a restroom inside and plenty of parking outside. Try it out if you want large portions of OK Chinese food!

Google
I had been avoiding this place because I didn't want to have another disappointing experience with Chinese food since I got to the valley. But I finally did, and I must say it wasn't a total disappointment. The fried rice and spicy chicken were the top dishes. Fresh and tastee! The barbecue slices were not as great. They were just pork with sauce, not really bbq. But the service was great, the two ladies working the front and serving were very friendly and attentive. The prices are reasonable, and the portions are a good size. We were able to eat lunch the next day with the leftovers. Overall i was happy with this place.

Yelp
OMG! Consider our household to be the number one Kowloon fans after our most recent experience! It was insanely delicious. We have been on the search for tasty Chinese food and are so happy that we found the perfect place. We did not know what to expect for serving sizes and wanted to make sure to have enough food for football Sunday -- but we were pleasantly surprised by the size of the portions. They're HUGE! Ended up with lots of leftovers that were even more delicious the next day. What was even more wonderful was the kindness and service that I experienced when I went to pick up the food. We had a big order so one of the servers offered to carry the order to my car for me when it was ready so I didn't have to lift a finger! They even threw in some extra soup to go alongside the rest of our order. So, so kind! Definitely gives us a reason to keep coming back and also was a big reason why we started recommending everyone give them a try. We didn't eat inside, but it was nice and cozy and clean.

Yelp
The food was plentiful and delicious. But the service wasn't good. Perhaps they were just having an off night, but we had to get someone's attention multiple times to ask for anything, and they forgot to bring us rice, which seems like it's usually standard.

Yelp
I was on a mission to coachella and I was craving some comforting Chinese food after living off of coachella first day with only 3 hrs of sleep. I woke up around 2pm the next day after going to sleep at 3am. I was so exhausted and then woke up hungry. Luckily I caught the lunch special before 3pm. . Lunch special they have a combo which comes with fried rice and kungpao, cup of soup, and egg roll for under 15 bucks and comes with a big ice lemon tea. . Chow mein was an extra charge but it was worth it and it was comforting and held me up for the rest of the night at coachella. . Kung pao shrimp , filled with lots of fresh veggies. The flavor was just ok nothing special. There was about 6 shrimps which is a reasonable amount. Plenty of peanuts too. I might opt for chicken next time instead. . Egg roll was a great munch and crunch. It was a veggie spring roll. . Cup of soup reminds me of egg drop soup and perfect to wet your whistle. . Ice lemon tea was so good, I had drank 2 big 32 ounces of it. It was lightly sweetend and made it even better. . Service they came and refilled my cup. They were nice with extra napkins. Service was quick for dine in. . Ambiance cute casual setting. Nice parking lot too for parking. It was busy when I was leaving. . Hope this review helps and it helped with my chinese comfort food craving. Hope this review helps, thanks for reading. Have a yelptastic day.

Yelp
Gross food, greasy, bland, and over-fried. Used to really like this place but something has changed and it is no longer good.

Yelp
Great people, very responsive to the customers need, large Portions, very fairly priced.

Yelp
The service is wonderful, the food is authentic and delicious. The prices are very inexpensive and you get alot of food. My husband, sister in law and I had to bring food home there was so much. Also we paid 39.00 for all 3 of us to eat. Totally worth it. This place is a gem. And the two waitress is on top of thier game. Happy and fast.

Yelp
We ordered way to much food for the 3 of us. As this was our first time trying Kowloon Chinese. In addition to the soup and three dishes pictured we had paper wrapped chicken and pork spare ribs. The paper wrapped chicken was good with a slight crispness on the outside the rest of the chicken was tasty and tender. The pork ribs were huge in size. They were a tad dry and tough. It felt like they were deep fried to heat them in order to be served. The soup broth tasted great. The ingredients were plentiful. The only thing missing from the soup was sliced bbq pork. That is just my family's and mine personal choice. We've had it both ways. All the food was good in taste and temperature. All the meat portions in the dishes were exceptional. And the value for the money was very good. When we arrived they seated us right away. The servers were busy cleaning up the tables for the previous mini rush that just left. The servers were all friendly and efficient. My family and I will definitely be trying them again

Lovella K.

Yelp
Food - super generous portions and affordable, but unfortunately bland and oil-laden. That said, you don't come here for a gourmet meal, but to fill your belly and roll out very full with plenty of leftovers for lunch (and maybe dinner) the next day, not to celebrate life milestones Service - quick and efficient, but our food came out in a perplexing order... apps and rice came AFTER a main dish Ambiance - packed on a Sunday night, diverse clientele (Tapatio at the table!) Would I go back? No, but glad I could experience the Yelp hype for myself.

Marco R.

Yelp
Beside food being amazing the overall atmosphere and vibe was welcoming. before Coachella my group stopped by here to eat before going to the festival and portions were and filling and the staff was very nice.
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
Portion sizes are big, and service is good, but unfortunately the taste wasn't quite there for me and my family. We ordered 4 dishes and an appetizer and it was WAY too much food. I opted for a classic curry chicken, expecting it to be slightly spicy and super flavorful and it fell short of expectations. Both the Szechuan dishes we ordered also lacked spice (and one barely had any protein). The beef broccoli was the best thing we ordered, but we were regrettably too full to make a dent in it. If you're looking for fast service and a bang for your buck, I'd recommend dropping by; however if you're looking for authentic flavorful Chinese cuisine, might not be the best choice.

Yelp
This place is the best ,egg rolls to die for ,and the people are so nice I would recommend this place

Vincent M.

Yelp
Went there for the first time today with a friend that recommended it. I have had my share of terrible Chinese food in my time, but this place gets 5 stars for the worst I ever had. The place looks dingy from the get go. The waitress was useless. I ordered the lunch special which comes with egg drop soup. I have never seen white egg drop before. It should be yellow from the chicken broth base. Cooking a lot of Asian food at home I could tell that this was a water base mixed with cornstarch and little bits of scrambled egg. It was so thick it looked like wallpaper paste. I ordered the Szechuan chicken, and told her no carrots please. We were still on the the wallpaper paste and the dish appeared way too short to be cooked fresh so that also lead me to believe that since it was loaded with carrots it was pre-made. Not only carrots, but way to many large chunks of zucchini, pea pods, and water chestnuts. with very little chicken and it was breaded which is wrong for this dish. The pieces were tiny and I was worried that I was not eating chicken. It didn't taste like chicken. MEOW! It came with a huge mound of what they called friend rice that had a burnt taste to it. It also came with an egg roll, I never saw a flat egg roll before. This was also very long and had a thin layer of cabbage in it and it looked more lick a pancake and very greasy. They seem to lure people in with very large potions and very tasteless food. Some people just don't care what they eat as long as it is large portions and cheap. Szechuan is suppose to be spicy. There was no spice in it at all, it was bland. Of course I did not finish the food, When I got home I hate to say this, but I had diarrhea. Do yourself a favor stay away from this place! It hurts me to even give it one star, it is one star too many. I can not believe the 5 star reviews saying how tasty the food is and the great service. Our waitress was so bad I was not going to leave her a tip, and I always leave one wherever I eat but my friend paid the bill so I am sure she got a tip that was not earned.

Yelp
Great foot, excellent service and lovely ambience. If you haven't eaten here, you should. All the dishes are fantastic. Great lunch specials.

Yelp
Huge lunch special portions. You're basically buying 2 meals for under $10 here. The taste is amazing too. Friendly people and service is brisk.

Melissa S.

Yelp
This place is not fancy but it's a local hidden favorite. I highly recommend their house noodle soup and the wonton soup. Their soups are absolutely the best, portions huge and prices low. Very nice people too! Support local!

Yelp
This was our first time at this restaurant that was recommended by someone my husband knows. I'm going to be honest here....the food was horrible! We arrived during lunch and received the lunch special. Service was too quick. Food was dry. Not tasty at all. I ordered Almond Chicken. My husband ordered Kung Pao Chicken. It seems to me the food was leftover from the day before. Not fresh. Portions way too large. The soup was like a thick paste. The fried rice was just white rice with soy sauce. The almonds and peanuts that were in the food were stale. I was shocked that the food was so horrible! We make better Chinese food than this! The parking lot is small and there is no name on the restaurant door. I will not be going back. The only reason I gave it a "2" rating is because we got seated right away and the two ladies that were there were nice. They really need to improve on their cooking. We were very disappointed.

Yelp
Tried this restaurant for the time today with my picket eaters. Everyone enjoyed their food. Ordered pan fried dumplings, A combo plate of orange chicken and chow mein as well as Kung Pao chicken with fried rice. The chow mein and the dumplings were definitely the stands out. Orange chicken was a little sweet for my liking but still delicious. We ordered take out for reference. The portions are hugeee!
google avatar

Monica V.

Yelp
Loved this place as a kid cause the food was good. Went last night the food was horrible. The orange chicken was literally 80% batter. I wish I was lying. Seems like the take small pieces of chicken and deep fry them together to look like bigger pieces of chicken. The noodles were different as well. The beef with veggies had literally no flavor. Tasted like boiled beef with sauce. And the free egg drop soup they gave me had the consistency of watered down hair gel. Last time I was there i didn't really like it but this time it sealed the deal. Never going back
google avatar

Yelp
Have had food from here in the past, this last time i went to actually pick it up instead of someone else and saw cockroaches on the booth and wall near the entrance, needless to say i declines my order and left, not cool! I know stuff happens at restaurants but it's usually in the kitchen not where the customers ever see it. Boo!!

Yelp
Always delicious! Thank you so much, food is amazing and feels like home. Service is always so quick, I appreciate you guys!

Yelp
DISGUSTING!!! We placed an order a little over $100 on Saturday, consisting of 3 veggie low mein, 2 orange chicken, 1 broccoli beef, 1 Mongolian beef & 1 Kung pao. The food was hot and everything seemed fine. While eating we noticed the onion in the Mongolian beef & Kung pao tasted off. A bit later everyone who ate the food had diarrhea. The noodles were oily & so was the Kung pao & Mongolian beef. Not sure if it was the oil or onion that caused this, but be careful. I've been debating posting this but I don't want anyone else getting sick. Maybe it was a one time incident or maybe it's happened before. I don't recommend it, stay away!

Yelp
After a friend's recommendation, we finally came in to eat. Huge portions, good quick service. Place is small, so feels cramped. Food was very good. Price was very reasonable. Will recommend from now on.

Yelp
Don't let the exterior of Kowlooon fool you. Just step inside for some of the best Chinese cuisine in the Valley. The restaurant's interior is rather plain but the food is fantastic. Great menu of all time favorites.. Huge portions. And exceptional tasting food. Fast, friendly service and great food makes Kowloon a real winner.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is authentic and delicious. This food is the step up from your norm Chinese food place that you've been looking for without realizing you were looking for it. Service was fast and efficient. It's a smaller space but still comfortable enough to enjoy your meal. Try it, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Rob C.

Yelp
Went here the other week and thought it was fantastic. Portions are massive and will feed an army without breaking the bank. This is not your run of the mill Americanized Chinese food. Highly recommend the orange chicken, egg drop soup and lo mien Staff are friendly with a great sense of humor. Bring your appetite! Will definitely come back Thanks!

Yelp
This place just keeps getting better . New take out dishes and they don't speak much English. No need to renovate as it's almost all takeout
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
Decided to try the place out after finding it on Yelp. It's a little hole in the wall for sure but this will be on my repeat! The sign out front just says Chinese food so you might miss it. We went in during dinner time and it was SUPER busy, they don't have a lot of staff but they tried. Despite the short staff and busy times the ladies were very nice. The family loved the food and I loved the price and portions. They are not stingy with amount given. We ordered seafood soup, wonton soup, beef lo mein, beef fried rice and pan fried dumplings. Everything had a great flavor and they use flavorful seasons (some placed give you watered down or light versions). I was surprised with the amount of beef given.

Patricia D.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch while traveling along Interstate 10. It is only a couple of minute off the highway. This restaurant has huge portions and great food. Also the service is quick.

Roger C.

Yelp
Best in town food is great service is awesome been going there since I was a kid hands down the best Chinese spot in the entire Coachella valley
google avatar

Yelp
Best Chinese I've had in years, small modest family owned restaurant, hot fresh delicious food, EXCELLENT
google avatar

Joseph T.

Yelp
Not a very good experience with this restaurant. The food what was ok was bland and had no flavor. The sweet and sour chicken was terrible and all the vegetables tasted like they were bad. The chicken was chewy and stringy. The egg roll was soggy not crunchy as it should be. Would I go again no. I still prefer Palm Tree Palace.
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
Food made to order. Very tasty. We stopped for a bite from a long trip. One of the better dinner choices we've made. Would stop by again if we're in the area again.

Yelp
We were not happy with our food. The table and menus were not wiped clean ever though it was cleared and had set ups. Will not be returning.

Yelp
Love this place good food, great service, huge portions, a great bang for your buck. Our go to place when visiting INDIO

Yelp
Was craving some Chinese food. Found this place on Yelp. Walked in the door and saw the servings sizes and decided to try it out. We ordered the iced tea, steam dumplings, beef chow fung and sesame chicken with steamed rice. Tons of food. Drinks were 40oz cups with free refills. Hit the spot and was $30 so we tipped $10. Took home a box of food and they send home the iced tea. Coming back for sure.

Julie A.

Yelp
The place is in a sketchy location. We ordered takeout so it really didn't matter. As far as the service, it was acceptable. Now for the food. The beef and broccoli was good. We ordered chicken chow mien with crispy noodles. What we got was a dish with a lot of items that we weren't sure what it was. The noodles?? A small sandwich bag with those hard noodles that you sprinkle on your Chinese food. The price is very inexpensive but I guess you get what you pay for.

Becky F.

Yelp
HUGE portions but zero flavor! The teriyaki chicken was little fried bits of chicken with a cup of sauce on the side. Lomein was more like sauced spaghetti and there were no vegetables in it. Kung pao shrimp had some flavor but no spice at all. The dumplings were the only thing we ordered that were decent. We ate a little and will be throwing the rest out!

David L.

Yelp
The best hole in the wall in Indio. The food is always good, and the plates are big portions. I have been going there for decades.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
Food always hits, great price for the amount of food you get. Sometimes I have a hard time understanding the person who answers the phone but they always get my order right.
google avatar

Yadira A.

Yelp
The food arrived fast, and served large portions. It was very tasty. The servers were nice. The inside is rather small, for those that prefer larger spaces. But overall, it's a nice place to eat at!

Yelp
When they say not to judge a book by it's over, I think they were referring to Kowloon Chinese. It's unassuming in a mini strip mall consisting of 3 storefronts. If you're driving by and blink, you'll miss it. Jokes aside, it deserves the title of bang for your buck whole-in-the-wall. Jumping right into the food, I had the combination plate. They offer something upwards of 30 different combination plates that come with your choice entree, a decent spring roll, and fried or white rice. Now I'll admit the fried rice was merely white rice with some soy sauce fried up, but something about it was so good. I ordered the Szechuan Chicken and it contained squash. It threw me off but hey, mixed with the green onion and other veggies, it all worked together. The portions will far exceed expectation. I think my plate was under 9 bucks and weighed 1.5 pounds. I had leftovers for lunch and the left overs of leftovers for dinner the next day. The spring roll was freshly fried and had a good filling of veggies. We also had the beef lo mein and it was as you'd expect. For me, everything was cooked fresh and come out hot hot hot. I'm giving 4 stars because the interior is truly subpar, the outside is pretty run down. It's almost as if you're visiting a different world once your inside but I walked out content and spent less than 10 bucks for one plate that fed me over three meals. FOUR STARS.
google avatar

SolandMona V.

Yelp
The ambiance is the only reason this is not 5 star. The food is incredible, the service quick and the price is right!

MissJ V.

Yelp
Very good great price very affordable huge plates The service is authentic. The restaurant can use a upgrade especially bathrooms.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was so delicious! Quick service, kind staff, great prices. Huge portion sizes so we were able to take leftovers home which is always a plus! We'll definitely be back!:)

Yelp
Love this place. Fast and some of The best Chinese food around. My family has been coming here for years and they all love it

Mario R.

Yelp
Super friendly family run team that works hard to make you feel welcomed and appreciated, and happy. The food portions are huge, everything is made to order and very tasty. The place is small, casual, and gets quite busy, but you can order pick-up if you like.
google avatar

Cesiah B.

Yelp
The food was really good but the service was a bit lacking. The waitresses could just be friendly, they are very serious. It's a very small location and in somewhat of a rough part of town but again we all loved our food.
google avatar

Malina D.

Yelp
I gave this restaurant 4 stars because it is truly a whole in the wall type place, but just judge the FOOD (minus the BBQ pork - it was terrible) and it's FIVE STARS. Huge portions! Combination Won Ton soup and Orange chicken are amazing. That said I am going to eat it while it's hot
