Vaca Negra Cheese Shop instantly became my wife’s favorite spot — and the funny part is she has lived in Puerto Rico her entire life and didn’t even know this gem existed. That made discovering it together even more special.
My wife absolutely loves cheese, so seeing her light up while tasting and learning about each one made the experience unforgettable. This is officially one of our go-to places now.
We didn’t book the tour this time, but Katherine, who assisted us, made it feel like we had a private one. She was kind, patient, and extremely knowledgeable. She took her time explaining every product — from lactose-free yogurts and locally processed cheeses to wines, spreads, and specialty items. You can tell when someone believes in what they’re selling, and she absolutely does.
The tasting itself was outstanding. The cheeses were fresh and full of character. The guava spread, honey with ginger, olives, dill pickles, croutons, and wine all paired beautifully. Every cheese was explained in detail, which made the experience educational as well as delicious. Knowing the cheese is processed locally — right next door — adds authenticity and pride to every bite.
The facility was clean and well kept. Restrooms, tables, floors, and surrounding areas were properly maintained, and the staff presentation was professional.
It’s about an hour straight from San Juan without traffic — an easy drive that’s completely worth it. We’ve already decided this will be our regular stop whenever we’re in the area.
One small suggestion for improvement: refreshing the entrance by removing the worn holiday decorations and giving some extra attention to the beautiful vines and landscaping would elevate the exterior even more. The outdoor tables are also a big opportunity to enhance the experience.
But overall? This place is special. If you love cheese, wine, and discovering local craftsmanship, Vaca Negra is a must-visit.
For us, it’s no longer just a stop — it’s our spot.
