Congee Queen has become my go-to spot when I’m craving quality Chinese food in downtown Toronto.
It can definitely get busy, and they don’t take reservations for parties under five. That said, I walked in without a reservation this time and waited less than 10 minutes, which honestly isn’t bad at all given how popular this place is.
Service and ambience are pretty average—very much what you’d expect from a typical Chinese restaurant (iykyk). Nothing fancy, but efficient enough to get the job done.
Their food was delicious. I’ve been to this location more than 10 times over the past two years, and I’ve never left disappointed.
This visit, four of us ordered the ginger and green onion lobster, grouper fish with noodles, pork congee with century egg, and stir-fried udon noodles. Every single dish was excellent. The lobster was fragrant and well-balanced, the grouper was fresh and comforting with the noodles, the congee was smooth and flavorful, and the udon was perfectly stir-fried with great texture.
If you’re looking for dependable, high-quality Chinese food downtown, Congee Queen is a solid choice. It may not impress with decor or service, but the food more than makes up for it—and that’s what keeps me coming back
