The Grain Shed

Pound for pound the best establishment in Spokane for me, I love Grain Shed and hope it's here for decades. A true neighborhood bakery that hasn't wavered at all from its simplicity, process, and high quality as it's grown over the years. Stone milling their own flour in house, sourcing most ingredients from this region, using a wood fired oven for most everything- no shortcuts, always doing things the right way and it's SO IMPRESSIVE even if you don't realize it and are just sitting down for a slice of toast. Staff is kind and helpful, Shaun the owner always says hello and occasionally hops up to play music himself with a band. Music several mornings and evenings per week, it's a gem of a spot where you can just sense a lot of pride and joy when you walk in. Pastries are great, Turkey sandwich is delicious, weekend biscuits are a tradition for our kids, and we always love taking one of their loaves home when we can. 100% recommend.

We have gotten the bread flight twice, once as a couple then insisted on bringing another couple to have it again they also loved it. You get a total of 16 hunks of bread, would absolutely recommend getting with the sauces and cheese. The marinated feta was incredible, I loved the jam. We received different types of bread the two times we went so it was fun to try even more new breads. The morning bun was yummy, not too sweet, you can tell they mill their own flour. Drip coffee is doma, it’s very good they have an array of sweeteners available, free refills. Double smoked sausage breakfast sandwich was very good, was a little weird ordering because they just had a sign next to the regular menu describing the sandwich but didn’t have an actual name for it so the guy didn’t know what I was trying to order at first. They have some board games available so it’s a nice place to meet with friends. The first time we went there was live music, which although nice was a bit loud for us to talk even in the furthest area. There is no parking so be prepared to find street parking and walk a little

A must when you're in Spokane! Great food--never had something I didn't like or at least appreciate. I have a gluten sensitivity/allergy and it RARELY acts up here. Their bread is phenomenal, so fresh. Faves: Nelson cookie, chocolate croissant, any loaf of bread, avocado toast, turkey on turkey sandwhich.

Nice cozy neighborhood spot with a delicious assortment of breads. While most places in Spokane have great customer service, The Grain Shed sets the bar even higher. The community vibe inside is palpable. One of my favorite spots to treat myself to.

I tried the Breakfast Sando this trip; a delicious combo of a pork cutlet, egg, fresh greens and cheese perfectly seasoned on thick artisan sandwich bread. It was really enough for two considering I added ginger molasses cookie. Live music added to the complete coziness.

When bakers and brewers who care about their craft come together, The Grain Shed happens. We came in for breakfast on route to the airport and was welcomed by the sweet aromas of fresh breads. While it was too early to try their artisan beer, our sandwiches, oats, blueberry cake and coffee hit all the right spots. The friendly staff were very attentive and got our orders out promptly so that we don't have to rush to make it to the airport. Looking forward to returning to Spokane and visting this place again.

Just wow! I had heard about The Grain Shed nearly a year ago and it took me this long to try it out. For shame! It will not be that long before I’m back! I absolutely adored this establishment. I went with a friend for breakfast on a Saturday and it was a pleasantly busy place. The space is cozy but there are quite a few tables. We shared a few items and the breakfast sandwich was incredible! It probably could have fed four people it was so generous. The “shug” sauce that was on the sandwich and avocado toast was absolutely delicious! I’m wary of sauces and I fell in love with this! I wanted to try everything they had but had to settle for a few items because it was so filling. The croissant was delicious and a sesame rye loaf cake home with me to be enjoyed heartily. I also took home a fruit danish for my husband and even a few days later it was still scrumptious!! I’d you haven’t tried The Grain Shed yet plan your trip right now! If you have you know it’s worth getting back to!

Not a local, but it's businesses like these that make me wish I were! First, their mission is admirable, and worth supporting. Every contact I've had with Grain Shed employees has been more than pleasant; they truly seem to enjoy working there, and take good care of their customers. I need to shout out to Toby and Audrey before I go on. They each provided 110% on customer service, being personable and making sure we left happy. On 2 separate trips to Spokane, I've visited the Grain Shed 3 and 4 times over the course of 3 days (yes, if you do the math, I went twice in 1 day, and the restaurant was NOT just around the corner!) Everything I've tried is delish, but in case you have to limit yourself, I highly recommend the OG, the beets and feta toast, the bread flight with sauces and cheese, the molasses ginger cookie, and maybe a chocolate croissant. I've heard their bread pudding and pumpkin pie (holiday special) are out of this world! I tried to get over to listen to their live music before leaving town, but still need to squeeze that into my schedule. Travelers: save space in your luggage for a loaf of bread. Sadly, no shipping at this time, but I'm waiting for it! This SoCal resident is officially The Grain Shed's #1 fan. I dare any of you to try to take away my title!

THE BEETMAKER. The sandwich to order. If you like an array of flavors, and you like a light taste of beets, yum, delicious, this is the sandwich to order. At that price, why would you go to subway or any other fast food sandwich shop. This is the real-deal. Honestly, it's good. It's a small set-up with a lot of character. The making of the bread is a story. The lady at the counter explained it to me. Ummm...the take-home bread was sold out for the day: must be good! There is a small bar at the top of the stairs. I believe they have home-brew. Nice little bar! Quaint and friendly. I wish this place was closer. I'd make it a hang-out.

This place is legit. They make all of their food in house and their baked items are immaculate. There is typically a line but it moves quite fast. Seating can hard to find on occasion because of how popular this place is. I got a bag of their 14 grain pancake mix and it makes the most delicious (but very flat) pancakes that dont even need syrup. This is one of my favorite weekend stops!

It sounds dramatic, but I actually teared up while eating here. It wasn't just the food, it was the summation of everything it represented in a world that feels a bit upside down these days. The Grain Shed embodies intentional food made with locally sourced ingredients and crafted by hands that clearly care. The service was wonderful -- the person at the register walked us through the menu and took the time to connect. The atmosphere sealed it: live music from a husband-and-wife duo on guitar and banjo, a mix of ages enjoying the space, and walls filled with art and music references. As I sat there with a hot cup of drip coffee, the combination of it all genuinely moved me -- light, nourishment, intention, community. We had the breakfast sandwich and the bread flight, served with butter, jam, a red pepper spread, and schug, bright, balanced, and delicious. I rarely eat gluten because it doesn't make me feel great, but this was absolutely worth the "cheat." I loved every bit of it.

I can't say enough good things about The Grain Shed! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for high-quality, delicious bread, bakery items, sandwiches, toast--you really can't go wrong. Some of our favorites are the artisan bread, turkey sandwich, OG biscuits, and breakfast biscuits. Everything tastes incredibly fresh. The manager was so friendly while working the register and even offered us some bakery samples--delicious brownie, chocolate chip cookie, and banana bread! While seating isn't abundant, there's more than enough for a cozy meal, and sometimes they even have live music. A true gem in Spokane--definitely worth a visit!

What an awesome lunch stop! Fresh baked breads and beer - how could we not? The sandwiches were huge and delicious. We had the corned beef special and also got their OG on focaccia. The beer was right on the other side of the room and had $10 flights (4 big pours). We tried their Field Trip (Pilsner) Murky Wood (Hazy IPA) the Acronyms DIPA and the Cranberry Pineapple Kombucha. All super refreshing, not crazy bitter, perfect for a warm day. Lunch was so good we got some of their marinated peppers, olives and pate and their pink peppercorn and walnut bread to go. The staff was super helpful, answering all our questions and making great recommendations. Glad we made the stop!

Farm to Table that grows their own wheat, mills it in house and bakes their own bread. Knead I say more? Ambiance: 8/10 rustic, authentic, spacious with nice outdoor seating. Service: 11/10 (not a typo) Toby welcomed me back to the kitchen to talk with Josh about tips and tricks on baking. We talked for 30 minutes all while he, Ben & Toby were working hard prepping pizza dough, and a bunch of sourdough loaves. They were incredibly welcoming, friendly & helpful despite my flurry of questions. I was blown away by their hospitality and willingness to share the tricks of the trade from the masters themselves. So grateful for their time, patience and help. Food: 9/10 Bread: 10/10 just so fresh and flavorful, perfect chew. So good. 8.5/10 Turkey sandwich: incredibly flavorful and the bread was spot on. The chew, the flavor, it was just delicious. Nice touch with the jalapeños. Focaccia: 8/10 think vegetarian focaccia banh mi. Super delicious. The focaccia was so fresh, airy and moist. The ingredients were fresh and quality. The only thing I would want more of was a bit more variety of sandwiches on the menu. I believe based on the quality of the food they are pushing out that they've got some really awesome recipes in their back pocket. I will 100% be back every time I pass through Spokane.

This place is hopping on a Sunday morning and carries an incredibly varied selection of breads baked from a number of different grains grown and ground by the owners. My breakfast sandwich was delicious but it was the oat loaf I ate in hunks while driving home that blew me away. Fantastic and unique spot -- I just wish they served espresso in addition to drip. They also have a wonderful courtyard area in back -- which is a laid back spot to eat your breakfast and enjoy your grains.

The food was not great or worth going and getting again. At the grain shed you have to go to the counter order and find a seat. The day I was there, there was a musician playing and drew in a crowd, so finding a seat to eat your food made it tough. The place was crowded in an already small building. They have a bar, but they don't have a designated person running it and you have to go to the food counter and tell them you want a beee, then they go find someone to serve you. Ultimately, I did not like my experience there. I may give it another chance hopefully when there is no musician, but like previously mentioned, the food wasn't good for the price. I got a breakfast sandwich.

The food is amazing and the bread is perfect. I only had a lunchbox grilled cheese but I highly recommend it. It's counter service and I felt like the guy is only used to regulars and I am in town on business, so I wanted to try local. It is a very quaint location and very intimate. Awesome lunch spot.

Heard about this place within the first week I moved to Spokane, but didn't get to visit until recently. I love the concept of a bakery/pastry shop in the day time and brewery at night. It's located in a neighborhood, so wasn't too noisy and parking is easy to find. It was pretty lively when I went on a weekday afternoon and it had a cozy ambiance. Staff was super knowledgeable about their food . Love the boreka which was soooo warm and flaky and buttery. Would honestly go back just to have it again! It's massive, so not really a meal and not really a snack. Would love to try their other pastries too. Definitely recommend The Grain Shed.

Just so I don't miss out on my favorite treat, Apple Pie Danish, I reserved them for Saturday morning. Oh my, they had just pulled oatmeal raisin cookies and one had crispy edges so I just had to add it! No pictures of it though cause I ate it while driving home! Everyone there is so helpful and I love the vibe! Thank you again!

Fun spot within the Perry District. The biscuit and gravy was good (the biscuit definitely stood out over the gravy) and the croissant was perfect. Looking forward to coming back on a Monday night for Pizza night and trying some of the other bakery items.

Fantastic bread! We were looking for a good rye. We got a WONDERFUL marble rye! It must have been even better than Seinfeld's mom's. Friendly service. Rustic ambiance. Can't wait to get back!

This place nails it in every aspect-the food, the service, the ambiance- love everything about it. Happened to find it on a trip to Spokane a few weeks ago and when we ended up back here again, I knew this is where I had to go for breakfast-both days! Breakfast sandwiches are amazing and I always had to take a pastry to go as well. I'm particular about my pastry choices and these exceeded my expectations. Love, love love the bear claw with chocolate tahini inside. Can't wait to come back next time we're in town!

resh bread, fresh vegetables--what more could I want? The sandwiches here are absolutely out of this world, and the loaves of bread are not only delicious but super affordable. Even when it's busy, the staff is kind and caring, which makes the whole experience even better. If you're looking for great food and great service, The Grain Shed is the spot.

Always enjoy the pastries and bread at The Grain Shed. Service is also excellent. I appreciate that they grow their own grains. Coffee needs a little work.

My daughter is obsessed with The Grain Shed. It gets crowded at times, but it's probably due to the food being so good.

The best bread in town with great variety of organic sourdough baked goods made from ancient organic grains grown locally. The service is great and they're so friendly and make you feel at home. They often have local musicians playing and it can be loud, but a great vibe. A great place for breakfast or lunch. Pricey, but not for the quality and well worth it.

Awesome staff, happy to tell you about the breads. Great selection of breads, which varies by day. Good coffee. We got a bread platter. What a great idea. The savory sauces were delicious. The jam was really good. Yumm! We got drip coffee which is refillable. Heck of a deal! And there was live music by rolin(?) Keys. Nice!

They have great chocolate croissants and are one of the few places in town that sell challah bread. I'll be coming back again!

I was so excited to come and try their sandwiches, however upon arrival I was told they didn't make sandwiches on the day we came. They were having pizza night, but we didn't want to wait for them to start making them. We needed up getting a pastry which was fine, I didn't find anything spectacular about it. Staff was friendly and welcoming.

What a cute place! Stopped here for breakfast/lunch on my way to the airport. Sandwich was great! Bread was soooo good. Live music was a nice touch. Really enjoyed this cozy little spot.

Best turkey sandwich! A turkey sandwich that makes you long for a turkey sandwich! Turkey! It's not about the turkey, it's about the bread and the balance. Wet to dry in perfect harmony. Flavors like a Shen Yun dance troupe leaping across the floor of your mouth, minus the bizarre ideological aftertaste. Bread here is crazy good. Crazy expensive as well so clench your butt cheeks and hold on, but it's worth it. You'll come away with a tummy that thanks you for the fresh and wholesome ingredients. Service is ok. It's very hipstery which to me reads a bit aloof and condescending, but they can't help it and are well-meaning and generally friendly from what I've experienced.

What a great place. It was so warm and welcoming and the food was wonderful. We ordered the Grinder sandwich for $15.00 and it was delicious. It came toasted on focaccia bread with salami, ham, gouda cheese, cucumbers, radishes and dressed lettuce. I really appreciated the attention to detail with dressing the lettuce before adding it to the sandwich. Everything was made fresh in their ovens and had a beautiful presentation. They also offer free wifi, a bar and live music throughout the week. The only critique I have is it would be nice if they offered a side with their sandwich as $15.00 for just a sandwich does seem a little steep

This is probably one of the top 5 bakeries I've ever been to. While they specialize in bread, they also have cookies, pizza, sandwiches, and a ton of local craft beer options. The store itself has a cool east vibe and the staff matches that with a smile. The person who helped us out was really nice and personable once we got to talking and the whole experience was really great I started with a Nelson cookie which had the perfect balance of salty, sweet, crunchy, chewy, creamy and I loved the unique blend of flavors. Best cookie I've ever had. She also packaged two loaves to go for me to travel home with. I got the culture club ciabatta and the purple Egyptian wheat which were both super fragrant and soft. They had a nice crunch crust and they held for days while I used them up. They both had the pleasant sourness associated with sourdough and a nice big crumb texture. The purple wheat was nutty and crunchy and really great with a peanut butter and jelly! We also got a lunchbox toast to go. The bread was thick cut, the jam was really sweet and tart and the overall toast had an awesome texture. This bakery is definitely on the pricey side, but the loaves are huge and so worth the cost!

Slam dunk for lunch. This is my second time eating here and I am just as impressed as the first time. I got the grinder, which is a non-traditional take on a grinder, but holy moly. It's on point. A little spicy, but a lovely heat. The bread is made in house and is simply amazing. Dark beer on tap. My go to! Milk stout was light in it's drinkability. Not my most favorite beer, but pairs nicely with the fantastic food. Family friendly. Service was great. It was PACKED, but the servers were very kind and friendly. We even caught the tail end of some great live music.

Cute place in residential neighborhood. Very fresh ingredients. Main attraction seems to be the homemade bread. My son and I each got one of the sandwiches and both were great...bread was amazing! Menu is limited so may be hard for picky eaters...we loved it because the items were unique and fresh. We'll be back.

I can't tell you how the food is: that's because this business discriminates against the disabled so I didn't get to try the food. **Multiple** employees told (not asked, told) me to leave because I had my medical alert dog with me. When I answered by informing them she is a working service animal protected by the ADA, I was laughed and sneered at. (She is a Belgian Malinois trained for diabetic alert. She is absolutely a service dog, and she was not being at all disruptive; this is not a gray area.) Every employee - yes, as my dog and I stood there minding our business and bothering no one, **multiple** employees singled me out - recited the same script word for word at me, in the same nasty condescending tone, telling me that my disability and I were not welcome. Every employee recited the same discriminatory script, which makes me think the business purposely trains staff to target, bully, and harass disabled customers. I didn't need that kind of harassment in my life so we left. I have never before been so mistreated because of my disability and this business should be ashamed of themselves. They bullied and shamed me repeatedly, in violation of federal access law, for no reason whatsoever. Just absolutely appalling. I have filed a formal ADA complaint because of how I was treated. If you prefer businesses that don't discriminate against the disabled, however, The Shop is right up the street and is kind and welcoming to all. Including those with disabilities. They have wonderful baked goods and they don't discriminate. After the harassment we received at the Grain Shed, it was a relief that my friend and service animal and I were able to enjoy our morning free of bullying at the Shop. I suggest you go to the Shop not the Shed.

Firstly, the esthetic of this place is just what I was looking for! I was happy to see all the varieties of baked goods! I decided on the bread & cheese flight. When it was brought to my table, the server literally set it down and walked away as I was trying to ask what the spreads were. After she walked away, I had some of the cheese and bread without knowing what was what. When another server came to bring my mom's food, I asked the 2nd server to please tell me what each of the spreads & cheeses are . I am so glad the 2nd server answered my question! The red one in the photo has ground up walnuts which I am allergic to. The deduction of stars is for the first server literally setting it down and walking away while I was in the process of asking questions. The bread was literally so good!!! The cheese was delicious! Honestly, if it wasn't for the interaction with the first server, this would have been a five star review!

Second meal in two days. My husband loved his sandwich so much yesterday, he wanted to try another one today. Both we fabulous. They even had a salad for me.

We were only in town for a few days and decided we wanted to support the locals. Bakery made sandwiches seemed like just the thing. This place is well off the main drag. Unfortunately we arrived about an hour and 10 minutes before close only to be informed they were no longer serving sandwiches. I will say it smelled good, but don't come unless you call ahead.

Great for bread. We stopped to pick up bread and a pain au chocolat. SERVICE: 4.5. His advice was helpful in choosing a bread. BREAD: 5.0. The Egyptian Purple bread was excellent. PAIN AU CHOCOLAT: 2.0. One end was very good (4.0): flaky light crust. The other end was overcooked (0.5): deep brown, melted into a chewy mass.

Service was great, haven't had a chance to try my chocolate bobka bread, but the cookies were awesome. Parking was a little bit dicey due to snow and ice, but we made it in. Will go back for lunch.

We were just driving through town, looking for some lunch, and this place was a great find! The beer is superb, well balanced, plenty of malt, nice hop balance, distinct flavors for each style. (We had a set of tasters.) They put the spent grain in the bread, which is delicious. The sandwiches are great, full of lots of homemade ingredients. Our turkey sandwich was clearly freshly roasted turkey, not some packaged product with a lot of salt. And came with an interesting homemade coleslaw. Definitely worth a stop. The locals obviously know about it too, because the line was continuous. Staff were friendly, helpful, and efficient, kept that line moving.

Delicious bread and cookies. Definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu. Seems like a quiet place for breakfast or lunch. People were friendly.

I love the warm atmosphere and smell of fresh bread. Whenever I come to Spokane this is usually my first stop. Love their sandwiches, good service and local feel.

My brother and I stopped by here yesterday as we were passing through Spokane. I ordered a turkey sandwich and my brother ordered The Grinder. We also got cookies. I can't remember the name of the cookie with the pecans, cranberries and peanut butter but it was AMAZING. My sandwich tasted good but I was a bit sad that the bread was not toasted and that was not an option that was asked at checkout. I think the sandwich was good but toasting the bread would have made it great. Good to know for next time. Overall cute place! The sandwiches are really feeling so if you're not super hungry, you could split one with another person. I would come here again!! :)

I truly thought I had written a review for Grain Shed but I was mistaken. I think this was because of the many times I have raved about the delicious smells, wonderful breads, flavor-bomb sandwiches and incredible pizzas to friends and family. All of those things I said are very true, but actions do speak louder than words and we come here almost every other week (frequently, it's weekly). You can't go wrong when it comes to their sandwiches. We have had the roast beef, turkey, and breakfast egg sandos ( - the pork, + roast beef). They are all great! If I didn't have to work I would be there for all of the Monday pizza nights. They also have a killer salad! If you have not been here, you absolutely need to make a stop. Once you get a whiff of the magic going on inside, you too will be frequenting The Grain Shed.
