Pinakothek der Moderne

This was simply one of the best gallery visits I have been to. The art selection is impressive, architectural setting is breathtaking and so are the surroundings. Cozy coffee spot both in and out and a beautiful shop for souvenirs.

Great museum! On Sundays the entrance fee is only €1, which is amazing. The visit takes around 2–3 hours, and it’s definitely worth it. Especially recommended for industrial/product designers — a truly inspiring place.

3.5 stars. The museum is huge, complete with a huge bauhaus furniture exhibit downstairs and a huge paintings collection upstairs. The space is not quite well organised though, in my opinion. It lacks a fundamental level of entertainment and it could use some more interactive elements. We visited the temporary exhibition on data cantres, which was interesting but writing and information-heavy. One issue I also have with some modern art museums is that it’s hard to find information on the artworks as the descriptions are scattered about and often lacked. Overall, I’d recommend visiting one time on Sundays as the ticket is only 1€.

If you are interested in contemporary art, you should definitely visit this museum. I came here mainly for the Paula Scher exhibition, and it was amazing to see her works in person. The museum itself is quite large, with many fascinating exhibitions covering almost every direction in art. A wonderful experience!

Keep in mind that you gonna need lots of time here. Good exhibitions. Idk, maybe it's just me but I felt like it could be better organized. I didn't have to buy ticket in prior. There was no waiting line. I visited during weekdays. Also, it can also be me problem but I had hard time finding the entrance 😄

I bought the €12 combi ticket, which was well worth it. The Pinakothek was the museum I most enjoyed, with its vast array of objects and great variety. I especially enjoyed the design galleries, and tree inspired architecture exhibition. A lot of stairs, and easy to miss some of the galleries. The lockers take €2 coins incidentally.

Unfortunately 5 hours was not enough to see everything :( all exhibitions are very interesting. You should spend at least 10h to see everything properly. I spent most of my time in the design museum

A wide range of exhibits, and a great place to visit on a wet Sunday afternoon. We paid 1€ each to enter. The building is a piece of art in itself. We really enjoyed the glass exhibition; amazing delicate pieces of art, but with function too.

Stunning, bright, and beautiful is the design of this building. Great collection of modern art. Well curated are their permanent collection and special exhibits. Mesmerized I was of Joseph Beuys, "The End of the 20th Century"; Paul Klee, "The Light and More Besides"; and, Gerhard Richter, "Abstract Painting" on this visit! CHEERS!

Am I a sucker for modern museums? Why, yes. Yes, I am. The museum is absolutely beautiful on the outside - glass. It must look completely gorgeous on sunny days. It was raining when I visited. It feels spacious. They have a great collection here, and I absolutely loved the postcards they had around the museum. I took a few of artworks I really enjoyed.

Excellent Museum to go to in warm weather, because it has great air conditioning ( Many other museums I have visited lately have not had good air conditioning). Even though this is a museum of Modern Art my favorite exhibits were the vintage cars and household items. There is a lot to see here! We spent about 3 hours on our visit. Lockers are available ( require 2 Euro coins that you get back). The restrooms are very nice. Photography is allowed. There is a small cafe with coffee and pastry items. Highly recommend a visit on a Sunday for 1 Euro admission ( be sure and buy online tickets ahead- they were already sold out for the day when we arrives at noon)

Such a pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon. It is only 1€ on Sunday's which was a very good deal. I am a frequent museum goer in NY & DC so I have a pretty good background on art and I appreciate a good museum. I would say this museum was most comparable to the MoMa in NYC. I liked the different levels to the museum even with some exhibits being on multiple levels it gave a very interconnected feel. When I visited there was a exhibit on different lights that I found very fascinating and visually appealing. For the most part they had exhibit summaries on the wall in both English and German but I would say overall the museum is primarily in German. I should have checked to see if they had guided English audio tours which may have helped enhance my understanding of some of the exhibits.

On Sunday's all Pinakothek museums to include Museum Brandhorst & Sammlung Schack are €1,00 each. Normally you can pay €12,00 for a day pass for all three Pinakothek museums to include Museum Brandhorst & Sammlung Schack. This is a very large museum and if you wait until Sunday, the cost of admission is only €1,00 when it's normally €10,00. There is much to see and with some works you may be intrigued and others you may not. There is quite the variety of works of art that are all displayed impressively. There is also a cafe and lockers. You need a €2,00 coin for the lockers to stow away your belongings.

Pinakothek der Moderne is a very neat museum and certainly worth visiting. It's quite large so make sure you have enough time to really enjoy it.

I love coming here on Sundays at least once a year. One of the best art galleries in Munich.

I typically look for two things in art museums. 1. Cat art (meaning art with a cat in it, not art made by a cat... unless they painted a cat... or self portrait, I guess). 2. Nudes This museum didn't have a ton of either of those things, unfortunately, but it was still a decent hang for a couple hours... at a rate of roughly €12. If you're like me and are in to cat art, you can sleep soundly knowing that I took a photo of every piece of cat art in the museum (and then some, because that's allowed here) and added it to Yelp listing. The museum itself is impressive in size and design. I particularly enjoyed the optical illusion of the lower level stairs. We started at the top floor and worked our way around and down, which is how I'd recommend doing it... though you'll need to visit the basement first if you have any coats or bags as you're prohibited from bringing them into the exhibit part of the museum. There's no shortage of security in every room, so be prepared to feel monitored to a degree in which you may have never before been. Buncha hawk eyes up in here. They had some notable works from Salvador Dali, Picasso, Klimt, aaand those were pretty much the only artists I knew here, but admittedly I'm not a big fancy art person. I did really like these plates they had on the wall with various forms of painful happenings on them (see photos). The special exhibits were pretty boring, I thought. A collection of old furniture and computers along with this cardboard room just didn't do it for me. And I found myself constantly going back and forth saying to myself, 'This is art. This is art? This is art. This is art?' So be prepared to maybe view some questionable pieces and perhaps do the ole, "seriously? I could do that."

Was a rainy and crappy weather day here in Germany and we were searching for something to do, my friend recommended museums and suggested this one since it's only 1 euro on Sundays, I'll tell you for your 1 euro you surely get your money's worth and much more, thus museum is huge and we definitely couldn't finish it and we saw a lot, this is a cool museum with a lot of different kinds of art to see such as exhibits, paintings, designs and all kinds of other things, I think art buffs would appreciate this place for sure, im only a casual art fan and this place was really good for me, one thing to note is that a majority of the exhibits are explained in both German and English

Amazing space. Great collection. Design, architecture and art all in one place. + a nice giftshop/bookstore. A MUST!!

Incredible design museum. From cars to computers, to chairs and record players, this design museum delivered more than I ever expected. Quite possibly my favorite one I've ever been to, and that includes design museums in Vienna, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Tokyo. Maybe it's just my infatuation with Dieter Rams, but this museum had so much lovely stuff to inspect. Loved it.

Sometimes I just don't understand modern art. What is it about this particular yellow line on canvas that makes it spectacular? Why are these sketches of circles in a notebook hanging in a museum? Does the Pinakothek der Moderne have such pieces - yes. Do I understand them - not at all! But, this Pinakothek also has much more that I did enjoy and for that it gets 4 stars in my book. Yes, the modern art was crazy. I walked through those rooms quickly and thought to myself "seriously?" As a fledgling artist myself, it just floors me to see works hanging in such a prestigious museum that seem to take so little talent or imagination. But, the Moderne also has a surprisingly good selection of Expressionist works. This is my favorite art category, so I was a happy camper! When I lived in Munich, my absolute favorite museum was Lenbachhaus (when it reopens, it's definitely a must see!), but with it being closed for renovations, I thought it was doubtful I'd get my necessary dose of Blaue Reiter artists. The Moderne came through for me. There were Kandinskys. There were some Matisses (not Blaue Reiter, but still colorful and fun). And, then there were some works by Franz Marc (my personal favorite) that I had not seen in person before. So, while I whizzed by the crazy modern stuff, I lingered in other rooms and visited a few paintings multiple times. We also stopped in the cafe for a snack - decent food in a nice dining setting. My one minor irritation was the ticketing. We bought tickets at the Neue that were good for both museums, but couldn't just use those at the Moderne. Nope, we had to go to the ticket counter at the Moderne and turn in our stub to get a different ticket. Why the hassle? And, then showing that ticket wasn't enough to get by security; we had to affix these strange metal fobs to our clothing. That whole thing seemed highly unnecessary. But, I'd go back again in a heartbeat to see some of those artworks.

I went when on a sunday shortly after it first opened and it was free. I believe this may still be the case on Sundays. Some good exhibitions in some of the rooms. Great for a rainy sunday afternoon though.

Great museum!!!! Excellent collection of modern art with master pieces of Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, Renoir, Max Ernst and a room filled with artwork by Max Beckmann, what more can you wish for????? Highly recommended!

Munich spoils itself with art museums--on the continent, it's second only to Paris. So when we first visited the PdM, we expected something good. But I didn't expect the such a great building, nor exhibits which so demystified 20th century art. The design section is a hoot. The building is designed to make some quite extravagant spaces, in the best tradition of Munich museums. All three of the Pinakotheke are superb, but many assume that the PdM is the least distinctive of the three, and leave it off the list. Don't.

ALWAYS A WINNER! one of my favourite modern art museums in the world. the building is great, the shop is great and the temporary exhibitions are always great. It easily competes with NYs MOMA. There is a great permanent section on industrial design with cards, motor bikes, computers and furniture designs. You are allowed to take as many photos as you like. Definitely worth a visit if you re into modern art. The other 2 pinakotheks are down the road but if there is a big temporary exhibition on you would easily need half a day only at this one.

that is a place not to miss if you are in munich and like art! although the entrance ticket is a bit too expensive
