On the Grid : Scotch & Soda

"This shop carries the vibe of an "old modern gentlemen." Scotch & Soda carries upscale mens and women's clothing. You can find a bunch of other great clothing stores in this area. The tile floor is the best!" - Anna Zajac

Great customer service and a nice selection of clothes. The t shirts are really soft and comfortable

Style, Quality & Customer Service at this place is unbeatable. There’s so many reasons why this is my favorite store. The clothing styles and quality are amazing. I promise that you will never find clothing softer and more comfortable than what they have. It’s like wearing butter, you have to feel it to believe it. The styles are so great too. It’s a California company and the styles very much reflect that. Casual, trendy, and a beach/surfer vibe. The employees and customer service at this place is somehow just as good as the quality of their clothes. Every employee at Marine Layer is so friendly and fun. And they always remember me each time I go in, and I love chatting with them. They’re the nicest people, and they make the shopping experience so much better. Lastly, I love their “Respun” program. They take old T-shirt’s and recycle them into brand new clothing that they sell. Such a great idea and so helpful to the environment. Check this place out, it’s well worth it.

I went into the store because of the way the clothes looked. Definitely my style. Then I tried things on and felt how soft everything was. The colors and styles are like perfectly preserved from the 1980s, But the fabric is cutting edge and exceptionally comfortable. I would like to delete my entire existing wardrobe (except for maybe my Lululemon) and replace with Marine Layer. Also on both days I visited, the staff was really helpful and nice. Even helped me understand the difference between medium and “marge,” which essentially is the length (not the shoulders).

Google
Marine Layer is a nice clothing store. They have fun designs which catch your attention from the street. Their clothes seem to have good construction as well. I really liked their mystery t-shirt vending machine too. It was a lot of fun.

Google
Their clothes are on the expensive side of things, and not all their designs are my cup of tea, but the quality of their materials is top notch, so in the end it's worth paying. The staff in the store is extremely helpful and friendly.

Google
Great store friendly ppl. Make sure you talk to staff about sizing - clothes tend to fit weird for me (short and athletic) they recommended a middle size and it works out. Softest clothes. Make sure you pay for parking. Meter maids are hawks.

Google
Great shirts for men (I haven't tried on any of the women's). Impressive quality and they're constantly getting new styles. I especially like the heavier twill work shirt they had a while back. The people who work there are down to earth and fun too. My first stop on any given clothing mission.

Google
This place is incredible! Friendly people (Real people, not used car sales people), Amazingly soft shirts (I know they say this, but I want to reiterate because it is true), and a surprisingly large selection for a smaller store. I bought one, then another , then another, one for a friend, then another, and I don't plan on stopping. Thanks guys!!! Support independent businesses like Marine Layer! ~Luxury Eyesight

Yelp
I am always amazed that I still get print catalogs in the mail. Given the migration to "digital lookbooks," it seems like a nod to a simpler time. Marine Layer's catalog intrigued me and I decided to stop in to their Bucktown location when I was doing some shopping in the area. I admire the casual yet polished aesthetic embodied by this brand. Oftentimes this is more difficult to pull off than one would think, either skewing more athletic (Lululemon or Athleta) or effortless but requiring a commitment to ironing (J. Crew). These brands have a place, but I feel Marine Layer hits that sweet spot and, most importantly, the fabrics are SOFT! Wandering around the store was a relaxing experience (this location offers women's, men's, and kids' clothing). I found myself eyeing several t-shirts and sweaters, finally winding up with a cropped black linen blend chore jacket that will be a great transitional piece going into autumn. The prices are a little more expensive for casual wear but the fact is that quality and the sustainable practices used by this clothing company cost more. I am finding myself gravitating toward more laid-back, yet put together styles these days and find this store fits the bill perfectly. Looking forward to working more of these items into my rotation of staple pieces.

Yelp
If I ever wondered what it felt like to be wrapped in the luscious fluff of a cloud, I now no longer need to wonder. Marine Layer embodies all that is quality clothing! I was extremely curious to get a chance to check out the store for their soft grand opening and was absolutely pleased. The store sits on Damen, but upon walking in, you are taken to that California state of mind. The clothing definitely reflects a cool Cali style, while boasting in-between sizes for men like "Marge" (in between Medium and Large) or "Larger" (in between Large and XL). Can we say genius!? I tried on a cotton hoodie and didn't want to take it off! CLOUDS!!! I fell in love with their scarves bought a gray and white infinity scarf that has the feel and look of your favorite soft joggers and it goes with everything! Best of all, their clothes won't shrink since they're preshrunk! Eek! The clothes are a little pricey, but you honestly cannot put a price on quality clothing that you wont have to worry about being unwearable after it's gone through the washer a few times. It's worth it!

Yelp
So glad that Marine Layer opened up a location in Chicago! We stumbled across a store in San Francisco while visiting, and were amazed by how soft the shirts were. This new location is decorated very nicely, and they have a comfy swing chair. There are 2 changing stations in the back, and a large full length mirror. The tee shirts are kind of pricey, but you can get them 3 for $90, mix and match between men's and women's. The women's tee shirts are not that great for short girls, since they are long, but the small fits petite men pretty well. The staff is super nice too! If you're in Wicker Park, check this place out and try on some tee shirts!

Yelp
It's probably a good thing that this clothing company doesn't make underwear. Fabric this soft plus a close proximity to your nether regions could definitely be a dangerous combination. For the rest of your body though, it's like American Apparel only more comfortable and with a much cooler California flair to the styles. The thing I like best about these clothes though is the fact that everything is pre shrunk so you don't have to worry about buying something only to wear it once and then being forced to hand it down to your little brother or a friend that's thinner than you are. The price point is a little higher, but you're definitely paying for quality. At about 30 bucks a shirt it's totally worth it to wear a cloud that makes you look like a well dressed hipster. Pop in to see the softness for yourself or you can even log on to their online store and they'll send you a sample that you can cop a feel. http://www.marinelayer.com/cop-a-feel/

Yelp
Great shop! Finally talked my husband into trying out Marine Layer after being a fan of it for a while, and we decided to try this shop to get a better idea of what would fit him. Customer service was on point and the clothes are great! They don't have as large of a selection as I would like, but what they do have is pretty good. 5/5 would recommend

Yelp
Came out for the grand opening, and the California girl in me fell in love with the clothes. They don't lie about the softness...very cozy for the cold Chicago winters. Definitely a stop for a tee, a hoodie, or an infinity scarf to ward off those cold nights...or keep your Cali vibe

Yelp
Oh, man...it's so soft! That's the thought that keep looping in my head as I manhandled almost every t-shirt and hoodie in the story (don't worry, Heather told me it was ok!) That's Marine Layer's hook: small production runs of unique items made of Pima cotton and recycled beechwood from NorCal, hand sewn by two sweet Chinese ladies, Xiao Ling and Fei. The boutique is very cozy, with a hanging wicker seat and artificial turf in the back under their corporate logo made of spools of their thread. It's premium priced merch, but you are definitely getting what you pay for with each item you buy.

Yelp
Really cute shop in Bucktown. The prices are kind of extreme, but the quality of the clothing means they're worth paying. The fabrics are so soft and as soon as you step inside, you feel like you could be in SoCal. Someday maybe I'll be able to afford one of those scarves or sweatshirts. One can only hope!

Yelp
Great, soft comfortable clothes. Cool dudes at the store and the t-shirts are my new favorite. You'll pay a price for their quality but I say it's worth it. I will buy again.

Yelp
Came to Marine Layer for a Yelp Elite Event - it's a cute well-lit store a short walk from the Damen blue line stop. The company is originally from the West Coast and their claim to fame is the RIDICULOUSLY soft Pima cotton and MicoModal (which is essentially recycled beechwood) fabric blend; it's like wearing clothing made out of clouds. When I went into the store, I was encouraged to touch ALL the fabrics. Any store that encourages patrons to get all up in the products, touching and feeling everything, is great in my book. The atmosphere is very laid back and low pressure - the associates are happy to assist, but aren't hovering over you like vultures, forcing you to buy their goods. The clothing is certainly not on the cheap side, but the quality is prime and you are definitely getting what you pay for. I'd recommend anyone in the area to swing by and check it out!

Yelp
Love this store! I finally stopped in and was not disappointed. I am confident that the tees and cotton dresses I bought will wash well and hold up due to their excellent construction. If you are a fan of James Perse you will enjoy their more playful designs and affordable price point!

Yelp
Finally an ultra-soft tee with quality construction that won't break the bank! Staff was extremely helpful, tracking down sizes for my friends in the California warehouse on a Sunday nonetheless!

Yelp
If you appreciate quality then you should be wearing Marine Layer. The comfort, coziness and style of the sherpa hoodie, t-shirts, sweat pants, quilted vest and jacket (i own all) are phenomenal. Yes the prices are above normal however the quality is worth the purchase. Add the relaxed atmosphere and chill service, you should definitely stop by and check Marine Layer out.

Yelp
I didn't even buy anything but the lady at the store was so nice and helpful that I had to write a review. Oh and such soft and well made clothing. I'll definitely be going back to get myself a little something.
