Jay Bee's Bar-B-Q

I can't tell you how many times I passed by this spot on the bus on my way up to Los Angeles. Finally had a chance to try it today. I called ahead to order and the person taking my order was very friendly. She answered my questions and we ordered two dinners, one rib tips with baked beans and potato salad and one pork shoulder with macaroni salad and baked beans. When we got to the place, we had to do a couple of u-turns to get to the spot and only one customer was allowed in at a time. We waited 5 minutes and our orders were ready for pickup. As you can see from our picture, the portions were very generous. The baked beans were tangy and had a little kid. I got the medium sauce on the shoulder and it was nice, a little more milder than I thought. Might try hot next time. The macaroni salad was creamy and savory! I prefer that over the sweeter potato salad. The rib tips were so smoky and fell off the bone. The shoulder was fairly fatty but still good. Probably would go with the rib tips next time or try some of the ribs.

Customer services was excellent. Food looked amazing. Taste bland lack flavor/seasoning. Taste like bbq sauce out the bottle no flavor at all. Beans were under cooked. Hotlink Taste like it was oven cooked not on the grill. Brisket had a lot of fat and no flavor just bbq sauce. Honestly i could have just cooked my own food at home. No disrespect but I feel like I wasted my money.

The food is old my meat was over cooked and tasted like it was reheated. The beans were no good and the Mac salad was old as well. It leaves a nasty after taste. I would not recommend this place to no one. The food is expensive and after 2 bites you throw it away . Hands down the nasty place to eat in LA.

I've always loved Jay Bee's Bar B Que since I was younger. Now their place is a little ways out there but let me tell you, their is no scrimping on bar b que. I tried two different places closer to home. And on my third day yes folks I had bar b que three days in a row... So on my third day I found myself at my most beloved Bar B Que place Jay Bee's. We'll just put it this way I ordered a plate for myself and my pooch, and whilst I sat in my car because it was a rainy day I thought maybe my guy would like a plate. So I quick messaged him and found myself back inside ordering another. Then the father of one of my children called me proclaiming he was starving, so here I was inside again purchasing another plate. Now the pricing is not bad at all so I didn't mind.PLUS THIS PLACE IS SO GOOD AND I WAS SO HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE THE BAR B QUE OF MY DREAMS THAT I WANTED TO SHARE IT WITH EVERYONE. and that's what I'm doing here. 💯😁💋💥👍👍👍Thee best JAY BEE'S thanks for restoring my faith in good bar b que.

Absolutely terrible there’s a lady a dark skin older lady. She’s rude. She seems to be intoxicated a lot of the times she’s very disrespectful and unfortunately, I cannot support this black business any longer. The portions have gotten smaller. The beans they give you really small portions and it’s very disappointing that they don’t value your money enough to treat you with respect so this is another black owned. Business I no longer will be attending or will be supporting rather.

Im a cook myself and not too brag but my ribs are way better then theres i should have read reviews before coming here im all for supporting black Business but im sorry the ribs did taste old and the sauce was tasting off is the best way i can put it the potato salad was gross the bake beans was old. I personally would not feed my dog these ribs However the guy who took my order was nice and polite so 5 stats for service 1 star for food. I hope this place changes and get better we need good bbq out here in LA smh

The absolutely nastiest bbq I’ve ever had. It taste like they baked a piece of pork and drenched it in tomato based bbq sauce!!!! Ehhh how sick The rating and comments are not telling the truth at all The elderly woman taking orders was very kind though The two men in the back plating the food moves extremely slow also

Rib tips are delicious! Beef rib are a disappointment. Beef rib was tough, and dry. The lady taking the order was very lovely.

One of the best barbecue places in Los Angeles county! I have eaten there many years and have always had great meals!

Jay Bees in Gardena is a complete shadow of what it used to be. I spent over $60 on 3 beef dinners, and the food was downright appalling. The ribs were dry, tough, bitter, and tasted like they had been reheated until every trace of quality was gone. The ribs were just NASTY!!! To make matters worse, the sides were an insult. The potato salad and baked beans came in a tiny 2-3 oz container, barely more than a sample size. For the price, this was nothing short of a rip-off. What stings is that Jay Bees used to be great . About 7 years ago, it was the go-to spot for barbecue. It has been around longer, But the standards have completely collapsed. Now it feels like they're cashing in on their old reputation while serving food that's horrendous in both quality and value. This wasn't just disappointing! Outrageous prices, pitiful portions, and disgraceful food. I'll never waste another dollar here again.

Of the times I've actually gotten food it was ok. This is not a normal business. From what I've experienced you don't show up order, pay and leave like any other normal business. You stand there waiting hoping after everyone else who looks like them has been served, then maybe they'll take your order. Or maybe they'll just continue to ignore you. I like bbq & southern food. I don't like this treatment because I don't look like them. I drive past frequently but don't stop because I'm rarely in the mood to be mistreated. Maybe it's better now, it's been awhile. Last time they didn't even get the order correct, missing something I paid for. There's other places I can go and not have to deal with that crap.

I decided today that I wanted some good old fashioned barbecue so I decided to visited my old stumping ground "Jay Bee's Bar B Q" . Man was I wrong. So I ordered the two meat dinner and I chose Beef Ribs and Rip Tips (pork) and when I tell you that everything I mean every single piece was overcooked and burnt. Now I spent over 20.00 for this meal and only thing that was ok was the store bought potato salad and the baked beans. If you want good quality Barbecue speed on by this place and go elsewhere. Mrs. Neely I'm sure is turning in her grave knowing that they are serving and selling trash like this...

Still serving up great BBQ , however, the sides seem to have been changed? The portion is smaller now, WAY LESS sauce, and different hot links.

Pork ribs look and tasted like they were reheated several time super dry and had a awful taste..very disappointed I've been coming here for years and this is unacceptable..such a waste of money..not ever coming back!!!

On my visit I experienced a older woman as the cashier and I felt that she was uncaring and rude. I have visit this establishment for years and I won't be returning there.

The food is good but I didn't like the service this last time. I went on the Fourth of July and was given the wrong food items. I went home and when I opened the trays it was the wrong food. I then had to drive back to jay bees only for them to say bring the food back for me to get the food I actually paid for. I felt it could've been more incentive for the inconvenience.

I'm so sorry to have to be negative, but as a 60 year old man that has known of this place since I first remember being alive, it has taken a lot out of me to voice my concerns with this little gem of a BBQ joint. Went by after work Friday Sept 5th they were closed! Ok, maybe next Friday; well they were open and I ordered about 42 dollars worth of pork ribs/sides. Got home and the ribs had absolutely no smoke flavor-I asked for Hot; there were not even mild. Just to top it off, they were old and tough! Is it me, or is it ok for us to just keep on accepting less than ones expectations and continue to support local businesses such as this one?

The lady is super rude not to mention the cook in the back very rude guy when handling your food order...... Not worth it Don't wast your money there

Bad customer service and food was bland. No flavor. I took it to go for me and a my co workers. When I got back, 3 of the 4 orders were wrong. They just served us what they wanted instead of what we ordered. No sense in calling them to fix it since the lady at the counter had an attitude anyway. I don't think they care if they lose customers so it wasn't worth my time going back.

Trash service that old bag at the front counter is awful with a terrible attitude. I just canceled my order and left I have no time for BS when I'm a paying customer. Keep that old bag at home and hire someone else!!!! 0/10

Went this past Saturday. Two pork rib dinners .. terrible, so old the bone broke half , dry total trash. Not to mention cutting one rib in half .. talking about 5 bones . Beef sandwich was bland and dry. No wonder to cook tied my bag into a not . Wish I would've checked my food before I left. Would never go back. So sad because they used to be very good.I traveled 96 miles for nothing so disappointing!!

Best barbecue I've had in the South Bay by a long shot. This place is the real deal! The chopped brisket melted in my mouth and the beef ribs slid off the bone. I chose the extra hot bbq sauce and it was the perfect spice level! I'll definitely be back!

The food is delicious! If you're ever hungry for some BBQ, this is the place for you.

Happened to drive by on my way home from work and had to stop to see if it was still as good as when I'd frequent years ago. I ordered a sandwich and BBQ spaghetti. Staff was nice and friendly. Got home and the BBQ spaghetti was just like I remember. The sandwich on the other hand tasted like something had spoiled. Couldn't tell if it was the coleslaw or the meat. I only took one bite and couldn't eat the rest because I feared getting sick.

I asked if they had beef ribs because I dont eat swine which they didn't have any. And the lady still tried to sell me a swine plate. I decided to come back another day for the beef plate and it had little bbq sauce on it and the sauce definitely doesn't taste like it used to. Never going back. Smh

Two words, dry and tasteless. Such a shame, I used to come here years ago, and it was pretty good. The sauce was bland and watery, and the sides were store-bought. The meat did not taste of any seasonings nor of smoke. I really wanted it to be good.

The lady with the curly hair had a horrible attitude so bad that I didn't even order food and I've lived in this neighborhood for over 30 years. They're gonna lose a lot of business because of her attitude.

Wtf my bbq beef sandwich was missing bbq sauce dry af also the brioche bread now needed please go back to the original bread please there is no need to change the taste the butter in the bread is gross with bbq. Well ordered the beans but didn't taste them sorry won't be coming back for a while.

This place is good Memphis style bar b q . It was featured in dinners drive-ins and dives. A lot has changed since that wonderful episode, the food is their downfall. You can't sale old ribs, I'm not sure what has happened but this was a gem I didn't want anyone knowing, now it's like save your money and go elsewhere. I miss old jay bees the service is still wonderful, but idk if it's the cooks or quality. But something is going wrong in the back, I truly love this place and I hope that they will bounce back! The restaurant has faced many challenges in its surroundings. I would hate to see this place go, because it's such a staple to the community I'm still in hopes they will put the love and pride that once made this place back into their plates. Their spicy bbq sauce is the best! Pork ribs their chicken diner . I still love you jay bees and I'm a believer in turn arounds!

Food doesn't taste fresh . Never any smoke coming from here. The ambiance is nonexistent. Customer service is mediocre. They definitely need new management and something new. It tastes and looks like it's on its last leg... stop drowning the food in sauce .. old food old sauce.... By next year it'll be a taco stand!

If a could give this place negative 5 stars I would. Customer service does not exist. So sad black people really need to do better. We are our own worst enemy. Try to support black on business and they are rude. Food is trash. I went here a few months back and ordered the brisket and it was very fatty. I said I wasn't gonna come again, but then I came yesterday, on Memorial Day and said I would give it another chance. This overweight middle-age black man was very rude and disrespectful. The cashier asked me if I wanted to sample the chicken hot link and he comes from around the corner waddling from being obese and says she can't sample no chicken sausage she better go to McDonald's with that!! I was shocked because I wasn't even the one who asked for the chicken sausage. She offered it to me. I will never return back to this place!

I was in the area and decided to stop here. I ordered a combo with pork ribs, rib tips, beans and coleslaw, mild sauce. Meat: The rib tips are pretty big and tender, I liked them. You get 3 meaty tender ribs so I would say the portions are appropriate fort he price. The mild sauce seemed to have a little kick but I don't mind because I like spicy food. My daughter on the other hand probably would have complained because she does not like any spicy food. Sides: I didn't really care for the coleslaw, the beans were pretty good. The bread was a little hard, I think it's because it's in a paper sleeve so it's exposed instead of being placed in a plastic sandwich bag like other BBQ places. I prefer fresh soft bread with my BBQ. Parking: there is a very small parking lot with 1 handicap parking space. There's really only enough room for 2 other cars without there being a problem with cars getting in and out. But no need to worry because there is plenty of street parking directly on the side of the business. They have a sign on the door that says 1 person at a time. Meaning one person in the lobby at a time. The lobby is pretty small so I suppose they only allow one person to allow for 6 feet. It's pretty loud inside so you have to speak loud when you place your order. The seating outside was closed, I assume it's closed due to COVID but not really sure. Would I go back? Yes indeed!

BBQ is good here. Not the best in LA but damn good. Ive had nothing bad. Ribs, Pulled Pork Sando and Hot Links have all been good, sauce is good. Less be honest, it is what it is. Its a small family owned spot, legit dont care about customer service haha All good with me, not complaining. Here for the food, dont need a hype person. Its take-out only, neighborhood kinda sketchy, parking is weird and hard to get to if you dont know the area. Its like ina triangle intersection. If you in the mood for some quick BBQ, not feeling like paying $20 for some food, this your spot. Support Black owned.

I went there in a really good mood. I was having a beautiful day, but when I went to order my food from the female taking the order my mood changed. I didn't feel welcomed and it seemed like everything that I ordered wasn't available until someone in the back told that it was. Wow!! I don't want to say that it was personal, but I noticed a Hispanic looking lady ordered right after with a greeting and a thank you, in which I didn't get. Also another male customer came in and she was chopping it up with conversation and "thanking the Lord". LoL!!

I've been here twice so far because I've been very curious about this spot for over a decade now. Yes it's been featured in Diners, Dives and Drive-In's in the late 2000s but the original owner (of relation to the Neely's of Interstate BBQ in Memphis; brother and sister in law(Mrs. Neely has passed), hasn't been running the place for over a decade. I assume this may be for the place's decline in quality of food and service. Anyways, despite the many bad ratings on here, I still decided to give it a shot. First time I had the pulled pork sandwich with medium sauce (tasted more like HOT! But I dealt with it just fine) and it was a very big sandwich and price worthy serving. $11 and comes with a fork because it can get quite messy! For my 2nd time, Decided to go with the 2 meat combo (pork ribs and sliced brisket). It was a little dry, but the BBQ sauce helps in this area. If you don't like BBQ sauce, you won't like this place. I, myself love dry-rub Texas bbq and this place isn't anything like that, but it'll do in a pinch if you have a hankering for BBQ. Sides were also just ok. The ambiance is pretty lackluster and in a very industrial area and is a sight for sore eyes. Also, they have locked up the outdoor patio, so there is no where to eat besides the parking lot on top of your car. Get ready to go somewhere else to try your food and avoid spilling the BBQ contents in your car. Hope the quality of food steps back up someday, this would have been an awesome spot to try in its heyday. 3.5 stars for the friendly service I encounter each time here. It seems they stepped it up in that area.

Sorry to leave this review after being a fan for years this place has declined . Bought my usual beef sandwich for me and my wife . The bread was molded on our sandwiches. Unbelievable how could they miss this? We didn't bother to bring this to their attention because the lady at the counter has a nasty attitude . I'm top of this why do I have to show my License to use my debit card ? Sad but we have taken our business elsewhere

It is truly unfortunate that the quality of food at this establishment has gone down. I'm pretty sure I was given day old ribs, and the sausage was dry and crusty. Very sad! Will not be returning.

My family and I have been coming here since I was in the 4th grade. I am not sure if the Neely family still owns it as the people I remember working it throughout the years have changed. I will say I am a little bias when it comes to Jay Bee's as it always sparks childhood memories for me. This is a small takeout only BBQ joint in the middle of a commercial area on a traffic triangle. This particular trip I picked up what I typically order. beef ribs. This is not the most ordered item so I will say the beef ribs have their good and not so good days. The ribs are usually large and meaty with a nice bark on them. On a good day the meat slides right off the bone. I typically get the mild sauce which is sweet, tangy, and smokey. Then choose potato salad and bbq beans. When it comes to value there is no beating Jay Bees. A beef rib dinner that easily feeds two comes in at under $20!! Other items that are on my favorites list here are the beef or pork bbq sandwiches. Most of the people that come here however, order the pork ribs. So if you are curious about the beef ribs I hope I provided some insight.

The employees are down to Earth. The service fast. The food was very tasty. I'm hoping, some time in the future, the patio section will eventually be open for everyone to enjoy!

The barbecue is okay. And it's a place that I've been going to for many years, but last week when I went there, I just refused to spend my hard-earned money. At a place where I was so disrespected by that mean a** old lady. They takes your money. She is mean as a junkyard dog and if they expect to keep customers happy in that little hole, they need to find another cashier.

I have been trying to get to this place for a few years now! Especially seeing the location on Diner's, Drive-in & Dives!! Finally made it in on 10-22-22 and it did not disappoint at all! Food is awesome and taste amazing. I got the beef links with potato salad and baked beans which both were good. Those hot links were tasty and could not get enough of them. The lady who took our order is amazing, funny and sweet. Her name is Janett and she was very friendly to us and spoke with us like we were family. Very welcoming and appreciative of us coming to the location. Great food. You have to try it out!!

1 person goes inside to order at a time. Ordered rib tips + hot links (hot sauce). I was excited to try Jays BBQ. I hate to say that I was dissapointed with the quality of meat. Hot BBQ sauce was great. Rib meat was tough to chew through and links were ok but neither tasted fresh. Mac salad was good. Baked beans were good as well. Customer service on point.

My go to BBQ spot . Their pork ribs and sauce are always on point. Every time I go I've never had a problem with the service, always kind and welcoming.

I don't understand how this place has as many stars as it does. The service is poor, food was cold, meat was tough and dried out. Overall, just plain old nasty. I bought 2 rip tip dinners and 1 beef rib plate. A WASTE of money. Oh and the potato salad... OMG, such a disgrace. TRASH!!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!

I haven't been to this place in a while and I thought I'd try it out. Worst food ever! $33 for rib tips and a barbecue dinner that I couldn't eat. The meat was tasteless and like it had boiled boiled. No Barbecue taste at all.

I really wanted to like this place because I heard people talk about this place and gave great reviews. I will say if you're looking for barbecue with great sauce then this is the place and trust me when I say the hot is hot in a good way if you like heat. I wanted rib tips and I was hoping for the burnt type of tips, well the tips were huge and seemed more like the whole rib just chopped, they were good but didn't hit the rib tip spot I was craving. What I was greatly disappointed in was the link sausage, which I believe was chicken, I didn't really see another option but the links looked like shivered hot dogs and was so under whelming. I took a bite and threw it away and suggested to my sister to do the same because it wasn't giving what it needed to give, The person at the counter was super nice and I didn't feel rushed when placing my order and I know I mention the sauce is great but if you ask to purchase extra sauce the answer is going to be "no" which I'm guessing the secret is in the sauce and that's what keep people coming back, not for sure if I would drive out the way to revisit this place, unless someone brought me something from here that would change my 1st impression I most likely wouldn't. I give it 4 stars because I rounded up but it's really a 3 1/2 spot.

Check your order before you leave! I drove 60 minutes to pick up my son's favorite sandwiches for his birthday. Got home to find my entire order was wrong. It was definitely not an order mixup because I was the only customer there. I ordered and was charged for 4 "large beef bbq on bun" sandwiches, at about $10 each. Instead, I received 4 "links on bread" sandwiches, worth about $5 each. So, ultimately, I paid more and received sandwiches that my family did not like. We ate half, threw the rest away and had stomach sickness after. We probably won't be going back after years of going there.

I was working in Compton and we went to jay Bees BBQ pulled pork sandwiche was fire I would definitely eat here again..Spot.

I used to frequent this place almost weekly back in the day but over the years the ownership or management changed and the food is just not the same. It's still good, but I miss the flavor that made me love this place years ago. Hopefully over time it things will change.

Service was good, price's not bad for good food only issue with my family and me was to much fat in with the meat, both beef and pork just to fatty. Side dishes were very good.

I really want to love Jay Bee's, but I can't. The overall experience was horrific. To save time, I attempted to phone in my order, but no one answered the phone. I called 4 times. One person is allowed to enter the building at all times. This resulted in me standing outside, in the heat, while I could hear the order taker talking about their excitement about the new Black Panther Trailer. I ordered a rib tip dinner and this was BY FAR the driest BBQ I've had in my 42 years on earth. I thought to myself, "did I order beef jerky"? I honestly chewed each piece until I got tired of chewing and spit out the meat. The BBQ sauce was good, however, once I looked in the tray under the rib tips, I saw nothing but a mixture of grease and bbq sauce. The beans were great. The potato salad was average at best. I am NEVER going back to Jay Bee's again. I deserve better.

I the top 2 of worst service ever!!!! This older lady who always seems to be busy and as if u are interrupting her day is taking orders!!! To day I went and NO ONE IN LINE.....NO INE IN STORE!! same attitude and could not get the order correct ! Please get younger more professional employees! That's what we are supposed to be doing is uplifting our future and giving opportunities. And I'm 52....so if I'm saying she is OLDER.....she is damn near 60+ and is stuck in her rude ways!!!!! She is killing your business (owner)!!!
