This Luxurious African Train Trip Takes You From South Africa to Zimbabwe on Vintage Railcars — Here's What It's Like

"Staying at the grand Four Seasons Westcliff in Johannesburg felt like the perfect prelude to the trip: I sat on the hotel’s deck overlooking the city’s trees turning gold in autumn and even spied elephants at the zoo, using the time to casually size up and imagine the backstories of fellow travelers before we’d properly met." - Chris Wallace Chris Wallace Chris Wallace is a New York-based writer and photographer. "When the Four Seasons took over Johannesburg 's celebrated Westcliff Hotel (a colonial-style grande dame that was admittedly fraying around the edges), its brief was clear: update the tired ambience with a cutting-edge makeover. For its first property in South Africa, the luxe hotel group spared no expense, closing the hotel down for a year and a half until they were satisfied with the full revamp, which debuted in December 2014. The new Four Seasons has modern elegance in spades, from the minimalist View restaurant (the main feature here is, as the name suggests, the panoramic view over Johannesburg’s lush landscape) to the 117 rooms outfitted with chrome details and local contemporary art. For generations, the Westcliff has been the bastion of Johannesburg’s most rarefied citizens, who decamped to the hotel for special occasions or met for high tea on the terrace. With its new look, the property is ready to welcome back its longtime clientele while opening doors to a more youthful set in the process."

Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff (Johannesburg, South Africa) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Johannesburg isn’t a city known for its views, and that’s exactly what makes The Westcliff such a surprise. Draped along a ridge above the city’s leafy northern suburbs, this former residential estate has been reworked into a sprawling, villa-style hideout with a resort-like feel. The design stays subtle with natural yet pastel tones, clean detailing, and plenty of breathing room. Golf carts cruise between buildings, the scent of jasmine hangs in the air, and the terrace restaurants have quietly redefined the city’s dining scene. It’s not what you expect from Joburg, and that’s the point." - Tablet Hotels

I spent three nights at the Four Seasons and loved every moment—the place is peaceful, with beautiful views. The heated pool is simply amazing, and you can enjoy a swim at any hour of the day or night. In-room dining was excellent, and the staff couldn’t have been kinder.||During my first night, I had an issue with the lighting in my room, but the team did everything they could to make sure it didn’t bother me for the rest of my stay. At the spa, I experienced the best massage of my life—though I’ll admit, it came at a steep price.||If I had to point out one weak spot, it would be the restaurant. I had heard glowing reviews, but I was disappointed: the service was slow, and the meat lacked flavor.

What an extraordinary experience! Everyone was friendly and attentive. This is a beautiful property in Westcliff part of town, a nice neighborhood in Johannesburg.||Great experience! We stayed in room 426 which is a panoramic view premier room. |What stood out was the phenomenal service! It was so great we came back at the end of the week before our flight back home.|||We used their car service which picked us up from airport (roundtrip and around town).||When we arrived the bellmen greeted us with warm smile and were very helpful. In particular Banza and Calvin bell were exceptional|But so was everyone! Cossy (waiter),Boitumelo (Server), Ernest (waiter) Eloff (guide), Sandros (guide) Pastor (Front Desk), Anita (rooms) and the Mpho Tsolo Front Desk manager were all rock stars!||Front desk people also deserve some love as they were helpful with checking us in and making our stay wonderful. Modi, Pastor, and Mpho Tsoolo (Front Desk Manager) , JB deserve accolades for their exemplary service!| ||Of course our room was beautiful and had nice view!||The restaurants and facilities are all top notch and the view from restaurant is amazing overlooking the city.|We ate at Flames Restaurant and our waiters Cossy/Ernest were both personable and the food and drinks amazing. Breakfast at Flames also stood out as the selection of foods from the buffet were delicious and one had a nice selection of myraid of choices for every palate. Amina our server at breakfast was also pleasant. ||Highly recommend this gem!

What an amazing property. Recently stayed here both before and after our safari experience. The staff does an amazing job and service is clearly Four Seasons level. The rooms have great views of Joburg. ||The restaurant area has incredible views and a very robust menu - something for everyone. Wine list is exceptional as well - try some great South African wines!! Craft cocktails are also yummy - tried most of them!!!||The entire team does a great job of making this your home away from home. We will definitely be back!!||PS - try the spa - amazing treatments!!

Breakfast at Flames Restaurant was a real letdown. For a Four Seasons property, the food quality was shockingly poor. The eggs were badly overcooked, the avocado was clearly past its best, and the overall flavors felt flat and uninspired. This is not the standard one expects when dining at a luxury hotel. The only redeeming part of the experience was the service—staff were attentive and genuinely excellent. Unfortunately, great service can’t make up for disappointing food. At this level, the restaurant should be delivering a far higher standard.

Very nice hotel with great breakfast and friendly staff. There was one staff who was very nice, cant recall his name and he would always see us and be so warm and welcoming. We even made a song with him and my son. The rooms were nice our kids room was huge and they enjoyed the stay. The location is safe and nice. It is a hotel which was planned to be an apartment building of some sort so it is a puzzle for a day but there are enough staff to guide you, and after a day one has it all figured. I only ordered in room dinner one day and was great.

After so many years of dining at Flames Restaurant I am beyond disappointed today! What a horrible service we got at such a Beautiful establishment. I had to wait 20 minutes for a fresh glass. Our table was hardly ever cleared until we requested that they clear. Then we waited 3o minutes before receiving our bill! And the excuse from the manager is that they are under staffed😳 How is that a clients issues?!

We’ve been staying at the Westcliff since it was an orient express hotel now a four seasons but never disappoints.||A fabulous hotel, great location and dream service level.||Breakfast to die for and the restaurant menu is limited but ok. Even though the hotel is undergoing a new building area, dust was contained and didn’t affect us. We stayed a total of six days and will always stay at this hotel when we visit Johannesburg, there is not another that compares and by far. We love you Westcliff!

Spending my birthday at the four seasons was the best decision ever made. It screams "NEVER settle for less". My friend and I spent 4days there and we were treated like the princesses we sometimes forget we are 😄😄. The smiles, laughter, kind gestures are definitely 💯 over 💯. Thank you making my stay amazing and my birthday unforgettable. Definitely coming back to dine at the newly renovated restaurant ❤️
