"Kumu Beach is a seafront hotel with soul on the west coast of Sri Lanka, encapsulating the style and spirit of a world that existed before package tourism discovered the Island of Serendipity. The main house sits above a secluded bay, onto which the surf breaks noisily and into which the sun melts every evening. You are but a short stroll away from a turtle-nesting beach and a quick drive from Sri Lanka’s largest reclining Buddha at Galagoda. Without a hint of gimmickry or any sense of trying too hard, Kumu Beach is an ideal place to decompress."

Kumu Beach, Balapitiya, Sri Lanka - Explore & Book

"Dazzling sunsets, warm sea swims and nesting marine turtles are a few highlights of a stay at Kumu Beach, a cool design hotel with a chilled vibe. Sitting above a golden-sand beach, Kumu’s grassy lawn is sprinkled with hammocks and teak loungers. The 10 bedrooms allow you to gaze at the ocean from the comfort of your four-poster, and the rooftops of the whitewashed buildings are primed for private starlit dining. In the garden lies a deep blue pool with a built-in seat and water jets. It's perfect for couples, though it works well for families, too. Design is contemporary, and interiors are simplistic yet practical. Local artisans were engaged to beautify interior and exterior spaces, and your eyes are drawn to Batik-work cushions, vast globe-like garden sculptures, honey-coloured furnishings, and a brass fish suspended above the staircase. Cuisine is modern, too: Kumu is a sister hotel of Fort Bazaar and Wallawwa and shares similarly polished butler-style service; afternoon tea and social hour drinks are included in the rates too. Watersports haven Bentota is 30 minutes' drive away, as is Lunuganga, the enviable tropical garden of the late architect, Geoffrey Bawa. Galle is an hour's train ride away, a scenic coastal chug. Highs A very relaxing spot, thanks to its quiet end-of-beach setting The smiling staff really heighten the experience – nothing is too much trouble We loved the inventive modern cuisine, with sharing platters and alfresco dining opportunities Perfect for a chilled romantic break – starlit dining, massages, four-poster beds, dreamy sunsets, direct beach access Wild turtles often nest on the beach Lows Sea swimming is seasonal (November to April) – but the 23-metre pool compensates There isn’t a huge amount nearby; Bentota (30 minutes’ drive) is the closest place to shop and dine We found the WiFi a little patchy on our most recent visit" - Emma Boyle

Kumu Beach was meant to be an escape for my husband and I, and it delivered that experience a hundred percent! The hotel looks beautiful and so serene - amazing greens, ocean views and overall ambience. |Loved the cocktail hour on the lawn - the G&T was refreshing! Food was amazing, especially the way they did their steak! |The staff were very very friendly, from the time we stepped in they were so hospitable and attentive. Cheers to Pushpitha who was very flexible and made sure that our room was well kept! Cheers to Anoj, Chef, Menaka and the rest of the team for making our stay a memorable one.

Kumu Beach is truly a gem — the property is marvelous, the rooms are beautifully designed, and the ocean view is superb. However, what truly made our stay so special was the exceptional hospitality of your team. Everyone was professional, friendly, and always smiling — attentive and ready to assist. The restaurant team went above and beyond to make sure we were pleased, and they certainly succeeded. The food was amazing! During our stay, we celebrated my wife’s birthday, and for a moment, it felt as if we were celebrating among friends. We’ve traveled the world and have been in Sri Lanka for a month now, but the Kumu Beach experience will remain unforgettable.

My husband and I had the privilege of staying at Kumu Beach for the final five nights of our honeymoon. After 10 days of sightseeing around Sri Lanka, we were in need of some time to relax and unwind. As soon as we arrived at Kumu Beach, we had the most incredible welcome from the staff and felt immediately at home. The hotel is unbelievably beautiful, with stunning scenic views of the beach. The rooms are very spacious, clean and modern. We had the most relaxing five days and were truly spoilt by all of the staff who were so friendly. A massive thank you goes to Lahriu, Pubudu and Indika for really making our stay so fantastic. The hospitality was out of this world and Indika ensured every meal was of the highest standard! Indika even went out of his way to make us some special seafood rice and prawn curry - our favourite meal!! We left Kumu Beach feeling rejuvenated! We could not recommend this hotel highly enough and cannot wait to come back again. Thank you to everyone at Kumu Beach. Jack & Izzy xxx

After 10 days travelling through Sri Lanka, we finished our trip here with a two night stay. Kumu Beach should be a five star hotel. We have been lucky to travel a lot, and this is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. The location is unmatched with incredible views, including stairs down to a private and secluded part of the beach. The pool is lovely and there are enough sunbeds for everyone in the hotel to enjoy. We loved the social hour from 5-6pm where you could sit outside and enjoy free drinks whilst watching the sunset and we also really loved the indoor-outdoor dining concept, being lucky enough to enjoy our meals outside on the deck. The rooms are beautifully decorated and kept, the bathrooms are lovely (best shower in Sri Lanka!) and the balcony/verandas are also a perfect touch. What makes this hotel so exceptional however, is its staff. The service at this hotel was above outstanding. We had everything we could possibly need or want, and all with lovely friendly staff who made us so welcome and couldn’t do enough for us. In the days, they ensured guests had their privacy, standing back and letting us enjoy the pool without standing and watching us, but with just a simple look they knew to come straight over and help us with anything we needed. Thank you so much to everyone at Kumu Beach - this was the perfect end to a wonderful trip. Your staff are incredibly special, and an asset to your business and your country.

Great location and fantastic views of the sunset! We loved our stay and the overall experience at Kumu beach. The staff was extremely thoughtful; Prabath, Umanda and Lahiru were so lovely! The food was exceptional, we really enjoyed the well curated cuisine. The rooms/bathrooms were well designed and spacious. We’re really glad we stayed here 2 nights and didn’t want it to end!

We spent a relaxing weekend at Kumu Beach Boutique Hotel, and it was an unforgettable experience for our family. From the moment we arrived, we felt the warmth of the place — cozy, calm, and beautifully designed.||The beachfront sunsets were absolutely stunning, and we loved the slow, peaceful evenings listening to the waves. The food was delicious, and every meal was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented.||A special mention must go to the friendly and attentive staff, who made us feel so welcome throughout our stay. Special thanks to chef Indika and Anoj from the front office. It was also a weekend of many first experiences for our 8-month-old twins, and the team went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable.||Thank you, Kumu Beach, for a truly memorable family getaway. We can’t wait to return! 🌅👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🏝️🍃

A beautiful, luxurious small boutique hotel right on the sea in southern Sri Lanka. Wonderful service from all the staff, who are all so friendly, helpful and professional. The eight rooms are large and simply but beautifully decorated with beautiful big bathrooms. We had a room opening onto the lovely gardens with a fantastic view of the sea. The pool is exquisite. It is a haven of peace, ideal for relaxing. The food is delicious, a perfect mix of Sri Lankan and international cooking. The social hour with Gin and tonics in the garden, as well as the tea time are lovely touches. We were so well looked after, that we didn’t want to leave.

Our stay at Kumu Beach was absolutely fantastic. Great hotel facing the ocean. The rooms were spacious, nicely decorated and spotless and the view made us feel like we are on a yacht. Above all that, what made are stay was the staff that made us feel welcomed, helped with everything we needed and way beyond. Dinner there was the best one we had in Sri Lanka. Thank you!
