On the Grid : Massolit Books & Café

"For the perfect combination of great coffee and a good English-language book, visit the friendly and tranquil Massolit in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, where coffees are made from direct-trade beans and tea specialties are served with cookies, brownies, quiches, and cakes, all courtesy of a skilled pastry chef. The bookshelves hold real treasures for book lovers, including an outstanding collection of volumes about politics, history, and literature." - We Love Budapest

a not-so-hidden gem! adorable place that i went to a lot to study and escape my apartment. it's exactly what you want a cafe to be but it can get crowded at times so make sure to get there early. they also usually have good art and some little crafts which make it a nice place to get gifts for your jealous friends. food is good too!

My fav cafe in Budapest! Visited 4 times during my 5 night stay. Found it quaint, cute and bookish - perfect for reading quietly in the corner all day while The Smiths or Cigarettes After Sex play. Cappuccino was also best coffee I had in Budapest. Lovely selection of literature and warm and welcoming staff.

I’ve been to this cafe twice while being in Budapest only for 3 days that’s how much I loved it! It has been on my mind ever since it was so cozy and welcoming also had a wide variety of books 10/10 would definitely revisit as soon as I can 🤍🤍

Very cute and welcoming with seating options and a coffee shop. I was hoping to get a Hungarian lit book translated to English to immerse myself in the history and culture, but I found options were limited? Perhaps I wasn’t looking in the right spot. I also found it quite pricey. For all the books I looked at, marked prices were higher than the suggested retail price listed on the books.

During my one-week stay in Budapest I visited the cafe bookshop three times, staying longer each time, feeling at home here amongst books and trying many of the delicious savoury and sweet tarts, pies and bagels, as well as chai lattes: don’t miss the spicy turmeric latte! A very relaxing and friendly place to hang out. Thank you to the workers who look after the visitors so well

Lovely little spot to check out! It was the ideal place to have a break from the cold on our outing this winter. Great place to stop by for a hot drink; my chai latte was very tasty! In regard to the books, I perused the beautiful rainbow shelf in the back for a good while and was met with a frankly overwhelming amount of old detective novels. Not particularly my style (though I did leave buying one that seemed interesting) but if you're into that, hurry over! Worth noting that there's definitely other genres to be found and the prices for the books are pretty good! The front also sells some beautiful handmade items and prints that I regret not buying. Service was as lovely as the cafe itself!

Cozy coffe shop. Excellent place to have an espresso and a fresh baked plumb pie. Wonderful coffee place to relax. Barista was pleasant, polite and spoke English. 100% reccomended!

To be honest I felt a little underwhelmed having seen reviews of this place, though it was busy so clearly popular so each to their own. We didn't have a drink as there wasn't anywhere to sit which is fair enough, it's quite cramped but they did have a good selection of books and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The "secret garden" they advertise looks frankly quite derelict but the front of the shop exterior is a great look 📚

Extremely overrated. I’m honestly disappointed because after reading the reviews I was convinced that it was gonna be a good coffee shop. The place looks cool and aesthetic but it’s not actually worth it. You can only read books if you buy them. Otherwise you cannot touch them. Staff were not particularly friendly. My matcha latte did not taste good, it didn’t have flavor and it was watery. 🥲 My friend had the chai latte and it was kinda bad. It tasted just like hot milk. The pie was good but nothing exceptional. Cute just for pictures and cozy. Overrated.
