"Following the 2011 earthquake that destroyed many of Christchurch's eating and drinking hot spots, local bar owners were forced to come up with innovative new openings amid the city's slow but steady rebuild. One such debut was Smash Palace, which was constructed in and around a retro school bus and which combines hipster cool with a sunny beer garden full of quirky urban detritus. It's known regionally as one of the city's best craft-beer bars—local Canterbury brewers include Three Boys and Harringtons—and Smash Palace's damn fine burgers are all made by hand on site. Welcome to an unpretentious and energetic testament to the resilience and tenacity of the fine people of Christchurch."

Went on a hot spring Saturday, great atmosphere with plenty of people packed into the area. Quite noisy and busy but didn’t have to wait long to get a drink. Had a bowl of chips which were quite good. Highly recommend for a good social experience.

Great place on a warm day. (And they even have blankets for a cold day). Staff are laid back and friendly. Good food (nice gravy with the chips - yuuuuum). Hubby enjoyed his beers while I had enjoyed non alcoholics. Good location.

Great casual pub in the middle of town. Great team behind the bar serving delicious snacks and burgers, fresh craft beer and a solid selection of gin. Big shout out to the Imagination Seaweed gin! Definitely worth a visit (or three).

Was raining today, but they have blankets, which made it super cozy. Delicious Blue cheese burger. Amazing Perogies. we had the Babushka OG .... DELICIOUS. A HUGE RANGE of cold beers and ciders. Burger was standout. Bun was delicious too.

Smash Palace is a solid institution and I hope it remains long into Christchurch's future. Its a nice distillation of the city's post quake spirit and kiwi ingenuity. Everything new in the rebuild is all a bit too shiny for my liking and this reminds me of what the Dux used to feel like. Good music, nice staff and security.

Yelp
After a punting excursion, one of the punters recommended this place because his friend owns the business. Avoiding Asian food (headed there next week), another couple and I were in. I should note though this is not near the center of town, about a 15-20min walk. Thank goodness for GPS! We were not disappointed. The burgers were fantastic. They ordered the boogie (their #1 favorite since leaving California), and I ordered the bacon mushroom cheeseburger. The beef was extremely juicy and tasted amazing, and I write this as a Texan. To be fair, this was my first experience eating beef in New Zealand, so maybe all beef tastes this good. It's hard to explain, but when you eat the burger, you can tell it's locally sourced and isn't processed. You are really one with your beef here! You go up to the counter to order. You're then given an object to take back to your seat as a marker where you are, and food is brought to you. The setup is basically a food trailer with an outdoor patio. I really liked the casual atmosphere, reminiscent of places I visit at home. You definitely should check this place out! Cider $9 Bacon burger and chips $18 Coleslaw $3 Total $33
