Number 38 Clifton

Enjoyable short stay. Excellent breakfast and service, comfortable bed. Room was facing street and very quiet but it became too warm (partly because towel rail in bathroom on and couldn’t turn it off). Opened window but then noisy. Go for room at back if you can. Otherwise, great!

We stayed here for a very special occasion and it was a dream. Incredible hotel with a delicious breakfast in a great location. It'll be our go-to hotel the next time we're in Bristol.

Christmas wasn’t a good time to stay at Number Thirty Eight. |We had booked almost a year ahead for the full B&B for two nights and were told three months before that they wouldn’t be able to service rooms or provide breakfast over Christmas, but we would have a discount, and they would provide in advance a continental breakfast in a basket to eat in our room, and a bottle of wine. We thought that would be okay.|We weren’t told that Reception would be closed when we arrived at around 5pm on Christmas Eve. It’s normally open until 8. So, we were greeted by the locked door and a keypad which wasn’t clear in the dark. We found a button to “call” and were answered with a question as to whether we had received their email. No. So we were let in remotely and told our room number and where to find it. It wasn’t any kind of ‘welcome’.|It was a stylish room with a big bathroom with bath and separate shower. The registration form indicated it was an upgrade. In the room the only hanging space was on pegs on the walls and there were no shelves or drawers, not even in the cubes beside the bed. |Logging onto the Wi-Fi, we found their email. It had been sent while we were driving to Bristol. If we had seen it before arriving we would have been none the wiser because the “(insert)” for the room number and its location hadn’t been inserted. It told us that the guest folder would contain a map, a list of local bars and restaurants and taxi numbers. It did not.|Returning after visiting nearby, the room was cool. The valve on the radiator was turned to ‘off’. On the wall, a panel with a blank display had a label fixed saying Do Not Adjust. An isolator higher up was identically marked and switched to ‘off’. Nothing in the guest folder. Switching on the isolator and the valve did at least get us heat starting at 07:45 the following morning. The extractor fan in the bathroom only came on after switching the isolator to ‘on’ and the light off! The temperature control knob in the shower was so stiff that it was very difficult to turn.|The in-room breakfast was reasonable, but there wasn’t sufficient to cover our second morning. The registration form in the room indicated we had the full amount to pay on departure, but we had prepaid in full. The first time we saw a member of staff, fleetingly, was when we checked out and at least we didn’t have to argue about payment.|Perhaps Number Thirty Eight is better at other times. Perhaps they welcome and look after their guests better. They need to get the details correct as well as the grand impression. Our experience was very disappointing and we won’t use it again.

Treated with such kindness by the friendly staff on my stay Sunday. The suite was immaculate with much attention to detail. The roll top bath was lovely. Had a take away from BOSCO which tasted as good as in the restaurant (I had eaten there before). The vegetarian breakfast was delicious and finished the morning with a cuppa on the terrace in the sunshine. If you are looking for a boutique hotel that is different from the norm, this is the place. This is the second time I’ve stayed there and would highly recommend it and go again. Da iawn.

What a lovely little place. Gorgeous views front and back, well laid out public areas, quiet location (a mile from the city centre). The room we stayed in was well furnished, nicely decorated and had a large and well designed bathroom. The bed wasn't the most comfortable I've ever slept in but it was more than adequate. Nicely stocked mini bar - with fresh milk for tea or coffee! Staff were friendly and professional. I'm already looking forward to returning.

We stayed a night here when in Bristol. The interiors of the hotel are beautiful. We booked the most standard room with just a shower, but it was more than adequate with lovely furnishings. We had the full english breakfast which was lovely. |No real negatives - except that the staff could have been slightly more enthusiastic !

We enjoyed our three night stay.||We received a friendly welcome, and we liked our room at the back which looked over the rooftops of the city, rather than onto the busy road at the front. It was a little smaller than we were expecting, judging from the diagrams on the website, but it was perfectly adequate for a short stay even with limited storage space.||Breakfasts were good, although in the two cooked dishes we had there were missing ingredients as listed on the menus. If I’m honest, I missed a continental buffet- I usually enjoy a small spoonful of yoghurt with a sprinkle of granola, some fruits and a pastry before moving on to a small cooked breakfast. Here the choice was either/or. Consequently, each was far too big and more than I could manage.||We enjoyed a drink before dinner in one of the rooms downstairs one evening, but it lacked a bit of atmosphere with nobody else around.||Overall, it was a good place to stay, nice and quiet, out of the hustle and bustle, within walking distance of Clifton, Whiteladies Road and the restaurants we’d booked in advance- Littlefrench and the Lido.||One of the young staff was particularly understanding when, owing to an unpleasant migraine, I had to return early from being in town. Thank you.

A charming hotel that gives a classy experiece. Great location and awesome city views. Stylish room and delicious breakfast. The rooms were comfortable and bathrooms spacious and clean with a great shower + bathtub. Very nice hotel
