"Unassuming and discreet, this hotel overlooking the canal is an intimate 30-room affair – and surprisingly quiet, considering its location in buzzy Navigli. Four years of sensitive restoration were needed to revamp the 19th-century casa di ringhiera, a typical Milanese house with a shared balcony. The result, finished in 2011, is all the more tasteful thanks to the vintage furnishings chosen by collector Raimondo Garau. The main part of the hotel wraps around an internal courtyard and each floor’s railings are covered in sweetly scented jasmine. Under a coffered ceiling on the ground floor, Ristorante Bugandè serves chef Davide Brovelli’s contemporary versions of Lombard classics, including the omnipresent cotoletta (veal cutlet) and creamy risotto."

Maison Borella, a Design Boutique Hotel Milan, Italy

"Located on the banks of the Naviglio Grande canal, Maison Borella is in Milan’s Porta Ticinese quarter. Set in an 18th-century building, it offers free internet, a restaurant, and rooms with satellite LCD TV. Decorated in a simple yet elegant style, rooms at the Borella are all air conditioned. Each has soft bathrobes and slippers in the private bathroom, while some feature exposed-beam ceilings and a balcony with city views. The buffet breakfast includes homemade cakes and fresh fruit. The restaurant serves both Milanese and classic Italian cuisine. Guests can relax in the hotel’s modern atrium lounge area. Why not catch up on emails while enjoying a glass of wine or cocktail from the bar? Porta Genova Metro, on the Green Line, is 600 metres from the hotel and connects you with Milano Centrale Train Station. The property is 10 km from the Expo 2015 Exhibition Centre." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

"Milan’s canals may not be the equal of Venice’s, but that doesn’t make Maison Borella’s waterside setting any less special. This charming 18th-century building, with its interior courtyard and its hybrid historic-contemporary interior design, offers a welcome break from Milan’s urban pace, as well as its prevailing ultra-polished aesthetic. The rooms and suites are full of character, and are more spacious than you might ordinarily expect. Bugandè, the restaurant, offers indoor and outdoor seating, season permitting; meanwhile you’re just to the southwest of the city center, with easy access to all Milan’s best." - Tablet Hotels

I had a fantastic stay at Maison Borella. What a great value for the price. The property is beautiful and I was lucky enough to have a room facing the canal. The staff was kind and helpful, allowing me to check in early with no issues. The rooms are simple but very clean and the bed extremely comfortable The robes and slippers were such a nice touch as well! The Navigli district is so fun and vibrant and was such a great location to be in at night. To note, it is a little noisy because you are in a prime, busy location but nothing that I minded nor that a little white noise couldn’t fix! I will absolutely recommend Maison Borella to friends/ family as well as stay again when back in Milan.

Draped in greenery and accessed through a cobblestone courtyard, this hotel is very romantic looking. However, the location is in the midst of Milan's biggest party zone. Did we know this before we booked? No. The street noise is incredible. Even with double-glazing and wooden shutters firmly shut, I had to sleep with ear plugs on, fortunately provided by the hotel. The weekend party noise continued until about 2 or 3am. It is intense. And to be avoided unless you are into the party yourself. That said, the team here is helpful. Their advice during the transport strike was extremely useful and their advice on how to get to Pavia was perfect. If you are here during a general transport strike, consider taking the tram. They were not involved in this round. The breakfasts were also very good - actually the best we had on this recent Italian trip. The restaurants to the left of the hotel are also good. It's a wonderful location, smallish room but comfortable and staffed by helpful and knowledgeable people. But it's so noisy...

We stayed 2 night here. Lovely boutique hotel in a great location. Staff were really friendly and the hotel and rooms really clean. |The rooms were a little on the small side but we were only staying for 2 night so perfectly fine. Rooms were clean and comfortable beds. We had rooms overlooking the courtyard, which were quiet at night ( some reviews say canal facing rooms were noisy at night) |The location was perfect, right in the canal, with plenty of bars and restaurants right on your doorstep. Really enjoyed staying in Navgali area… great friendly vibe and not too far from the centre

Hotel was outstanding. Situated on the canal. Very clean and friendly helpful staff. We knew being on the canal it would not be the quietest of locations but ear plugs are provided. It would be good to have a mirror in the room as well as the bathroom but this is a minor point. The restaurant we were a little disappointed with as the food was only lukewarm and when mentioned the staff could have handled differently. However with that said the food was amazing.

This hotel is in a great location and is charming! However, WiFi in room was under 1 Mbps which is slow to point of unusable. It is rare to see such slow internet in any hotel, anywhere these days and it was a real issue for us (it does work in the lobby!). This is a great option for disconnected vacation but if you’ll need internet for any video calls, etc. while visiting Milan you should book elsewhere.

The location is divine with tons of shops and retail near it. It's also near metros, trams and buses you can get anywhere in Milan within 30 minutes by public transport. Staff is one of the nicest I've met whenever you lose their key they will sort it out for you. Breakfast was great but can't rate the dinners as we did not go there. Rooms were nice and cozy spacious bathrooms and comfy beds. Overall I would recommended this to any travellers or families stay for anywhere under a week. I recommend different variants of rooms for different groups.
