You can’t come to the capital city without visiting the Ljubljana Castle. Start from the center, walk past the river bank, grab a coffee (try Kavarna Čopomana, they also have terrific cakes) and walk up to the impressive hilltop castle, located just above the city. You can also reach the castle by tram (or by funicular, which at 5€ is a steal and is a lot of fun!). The Ljubljana Castle is much like a time machine, taking visitors back in time to the various periods of the country’s past. It also has a great courtyard and restaurant (Strelec) to eat at and enjoy the views.

The history of a fortess on this site go back to the 11th century but the castle that stands here today was built under Frederick III of Habsburg as a stronghold against the Ottoman Empire. The beautiful decorated St George's Chapel dates from this time. It was extensively renovated over decades using lots of concrete as you can see all around. There is not much to be seen of the old csstle. Left and right were some interesting details like the old prison and the small armoury. When you climb the tower via the double red winding stairs you get a nice view over the city. Entry to the castle is easiest with the funicular which is included in the ticket price.

I'm disappointed. It's not worth the 15 euros. The only thing you have to pay for is to climb the flag tower. All the exhibition halls contain mostly textual information that can be found on Wikipedia. So, essentially, you can come here for free, stroll around the castle square without a ticket, and enjoy the tour. The castle grounds are also beautiful. I recommend walking up the hill instead of taking the funicular. It's a good workout! And be prepared to pay for the restrooms, even if you have a ticket. Overall, it's worth a visit, but without buying a ticket.

Great castle experience! The funicular ride up is convenient and fun. Lots to explore once you’re there, with something for everyone. The puppet museum was a fantastic surprise - definitely don’t miss it. Highly recommended! The view from the clock tower is amazing.

Easy to get to ...funicular is a 1 minute ride. Castle is now theater. galleries, museum, restaurant plus the castle itself with nice viewing tower. Area of improvement is the signage. As the signs were not clear I just couldn't find the puppet museum which was the main reason of my visit.

there’s a great view from the top and walking up there doesn’t take a lot of time and it’s not that hard. the place could be pretty crowded but you can always take a walk around the surroundings and enjoy the nature. be careful if you walk down though! it’s very steep

Go as easily as possible to skip the crowds. We bought tickets at the entrance and arrive at 9:30am to no queues or crowds. Great views of the city. The history is castle is available in multiple languages across the various rooms. Definitely a good place to visit.

Nice castle and grounds. The views from the tower are phenomenal! I highly recommend buying ticket online so you can get a 10% discount instead of buying at the castle. There's no timed entry so you can buy the tickets just before you go. We walked up hill, didn't use the funicular going up or down. I got the basic ticket that included the museum of puppetry, art exhibition, video mapping (immersion impressionist art), and the 3D movie about the castle. The only part I disliked that they charge to use the toilets, which was a bit much. You already pay for the ticket so why should you pay to use the restroom, just include the price in the ticket.

Well worth the visit. It has a great story of not only the history behind it's existence but it's very own survival. Audio devices are worth having if you want to know more. We spent around 2 hours up there.
