Being a coffee aficionado and craft beer enthusiast, I naturally jumped at the opportunity to grab a six-pack of the Giddy Goat Coffee Milk Stout. This ____ beer is a miraculous collaboration of my two favorite beverages by two of my favorite places- The Public House Brewery and Giddy Goat Coffee House- both in Rolla, Missouri. For those of you who have never been to central Missouri, our small, in-the-middle-of-nowhere locale is full of roasters, wineries, and breweries.
I have to say, this stout amazed me in so many delightful ways. First of all, even though the bottle clearly states the low alcohol volume, I was pleasantly surprised by how little of the alcohol I actually tasted. My first impression was the sweet aroma of the lactose, then of the actual coffee. Neither of those were overpowering, but they were well balanced in the aroma, as well as in the flavor. Pouring black with a small, tan head, this drink is a full-bodied beer and exceptionally balanced. It is both rich and creamy in texture while retaining qualities of a much lighter drink.
I like stouts, but am very picky with them. Most (at least that I have tasted) tend to be a bit heavy and somewhat bitter or acidic in flavor, needing to be cut with something slightly sweet. This one had none of those characteristics that I was expecting. Hefeweizen is usually my go to because the lightness and depth of flavor allows it to stand on its own. This stout could easily become my next go to drink. I did consider scratching out the word "alcohol" on the bottle and taking it to work instead of my usual latte- after all, the bottle did say "coffee" and "milk"- but somehow I think my employers would frown on drinking at work! If you are a stout enthusiast looking for a more traditional stout, I recommend their Revelation Stout. For those of you who would like one a bit lighter and more balanced, this is the one.
