Come over and enjoy the new Spring blooms! (See newest pics.) Love the Conservatory Garden! Once discovering the Northeast corner of Central Park years ago, it has been one of my favorite places to visit - especially the Conservatory Garden from March to October! Every week from the beginning of spring to when the leaves fall in autumn, the plants, flowers, and colors evolve providing something new to see. The Conservatory Garden is a gem that (fortunately) less tourists make it to. While absolutely haven't been a flowers-type of guy, this park feature mesmerizes me. Now living nearby, I like to take advantage of this special place, however a staggered renovation has been underway.
Composed of 3 unique sections dating back to 1937, a French, Italian, and English sections plus the Crabtree Allées dividing these sections all fully available! The French section, with a central fountain surrounded by a more open space bordered by flower beds and trellised entrances. It now offers a palette of Spring Tulips! The just reopened Italian section holds a pergola and fountain. The English section, the southernmost part approximately between 105th and 103rd Streets, contain the largest flower varieties of the three. It holds the "Secret Garden" Fountain, an idyllic place to sit with its popular birdbath, that at one stage later in the season typically contains koi. Now, it features Spring blooms including Saucer Magnolia and various Daffodils! Like every part of the Conservation Garden, it's well maintained with the coordinated continual blooms and colors creating a visual symphony across those 8 months.
Access is through the wrought iron gate at the southern tip of the park's Harlem Meer adjacent to E. 106th St. and Fifth Ave. entrance, an iron gate on 5th Avenue at approx. E. 103rd St. or you can enter the English part from its own entrance, closer to the "Girl's Gate" of the park at E. 102nd St. and Fifth Ave.
If you make it over here, also take a walk along the adjacent Harlem Meer lake with its Boathouse that functions as the Dana Discovery Center, an environmental education center and info point. While the Conservatory Gardens features the flora, Harlem Meer in a more naturalistic setting has the fauna, such as turtles, birds, fish, etc. The brand new Davis Center at the Harlem Meer also has its long-awaited Opening Day celebration on April 26th, with programs on its new Harlem Oval public green and its state-of-the-art Gottesman Pool opening in June!
