"While South Africa isn’t known for its sushi, you can easily satisfy your craving in Cape Town at Willoughby & Co. The menu at this waterfront restaurant is encyclopedic—there’s everything from Boston clam chowder and spaghetti marinara to prawn curry and teriyaki chicken ramen, but sushi is the star. Try the chili-seared tuna sashimi or the tuna roll with caviar sesame seeds."

"Willoughby’s has been in the V&A Waterfront for decades, right in the middle of the action, which makes for great post-retail-therapy sushi refueling. Come here for reliable, consistent, flapping-fresh fish—whether you spring for the Cajun-style calamari, fish-and-chips, seared sashimi, spicy and creamy rock shrimp, or 4x4 California rolls, you really can’t go wrong." - Jane Broughton

The lines were long during the festive period, we said we will wait it out, other people in the line said it's worth the wait. They were so right. Being crazily busy like this works for this restaurant, It's pure Chaos in the best way, loud, packed and full of energy. The food is unreal, very tasty and addictive. Tried the prawn thai curry, the baby soles with calamari and prawns, miso soup, noodles and some sushi, beef fillet, and the Creme Brûlée. We were served by Romesh, was very helpful. Excellent service from him. Will keep going back.

I am surprised by the global rating. I would not claim that I am a sushi expert nor tempura but this is maybe one of the poorest Japanese food experience I had (referring to EU and Japan experience). The tempura were huge and greasy. Of course if you rate based on quantity I understand. Being close to the sea I was hoping to get super fresh fish. Nothing impressive here in the plate. Sorry but not a recommended Japanese place if you really like this premium food. Maybe the best of what can be accessible down town?! The only positive experience was John who took care of us

Dined at this fine establishment on Christmas Eve of 2025, and was served by the lovely Aviella! Despite the busyness of the restaurant, Aviella stayed on top of her game and ensured that we were satisfied throughout our whole experience. She regularly checked in, assisted us with speed, and made killer recommendations. She suggested we try this 4x4 Bomb Combo* which was absolutely to die for 😍 it was the perfect blend of fresh sushi, sweetness & tanginess, with an epic crunch to seal the deal 🤌🏼 This paired with a carafe of the Vergelegen Reserve white wine was just excellent 🍷 Note that this is above average pricing compared to your usual restaurants, but the experience is definitely well worth it! 💚

For sushi we ordered the bomb, the Tiger roll and the volcano sandwich. We also ordered sweet and sour kingflip which was the highlight for me. Sushi was good, nothing special but the fresh fish from the hot signatures dishes section of the menu, I recommend.

We had a celebration lunch at Willoughby & Co. and it was absolutely wonderful. We enjoyed some sushi and seafood, and every dish was fresh and delicious. The service from Joel was lovely & friendly, attentive and kind. They even brought us complimentary wine while we waited, which was such a generous touch. The whole experience felt special and made our celebration truly memorable.

Outstanding sushi, we enjoyed every bit of it. The chicken teriyaki was also delicious. The mille feuille dessert is also totally worth it.
