"Day of the Dead Sand Tapestries One of the traditions associated with Day of the Dead in Oaxaca is the creation of colorful sand tapestries. You'll find them all over the city throughout the week of the holiday, but in the plaza adjacent to La Soledad church, they set up some large ones that are truly monumental, It's interesting to see when they're being made, they bring in truckloads of sand and then the young artists painstakingly fill in their design to bring their vision to life. The theme of the tapestries is invariably death, but often there is a playful aspect to these creations. The ephemeral nature of this art form reminds us of the fleeting nature of life. After the holiday has passed, they scoop up the sand and return the plaza to its unadorned condition."

This square feels like Europe. It's lined with white stone flanked by churches and palaces and a park that houses ice cream vendors. Not many tourists venture here which adds to its charm. A very beautiful and calm place to grab a dessert, sit on the auditorium-like steps and just enjoy the sounds of silence.

Awesome plaza! Great place to spend the afternoon. Little fountain and courtyard with food and live music. The church nextdoor had some interesting architecture.

Beautiful place to hang out around La Soledad Church. Depending on the dates, you might find concerts or other cultural activities. You can also find street snacks such as Esquites, a popular Mexican savory corn snack. Lastly, is the place to try Nieves (Mexican ice cream) of many different flavors. The "leche quemada" nieve is a must!

What a nice atmosphere, we were there during Dia de los Muertos so it will definitely have a different atmosphere on other times, but worth a visit!
