Zum Franziskaner

Zum Franziskaner is one of those places in Munich where you can immediately tell how good it is just by how packed it gets. We went on our first night and the restaurant was completely full, with people enjoying classic Bavarian cuisine, beer, and lively conversations. The energy was warm and bustling, and it was clear that walking in without a reservation would be difficult. So we decided to make a booking for our second night and thankfully managed to get a table. Even though we were already quite full that evening, we still wanted to try a few Bavarian classics. Of course we ordered the German sausages, which were comforting and satisfying, exactly what you expect from traditional Bavarian food. The real highlight of the night was the infamous leberkas. Omg it was so good. It was my first time trying leberkas and I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Warm, juicy, and full of flavour, it was simple yet incredibly comforting. The atmosphere inside is cosy and very traditional, making you feel like you are dining somewhere loved by locals. The service was efficient despite how busy the restaurant was, and everything came out smoothly. Overall, Zum Franziskaner is a must visit if you are in Munich and want to experience authentic Bavarian cuisine. You definitely need to book ahead, but it is absolutely worth the effort.

My friends and I came here for our first meal in Munich after taking a long flight. The food here was amazing, all of us loved the schnitzel. Although it was really packed and busy when we arrived, the servers attended to us immediately. We had a wonderful time in this restaurant, definitely recommend it!

Fun night as a tour group. Had pork knuckle with mashed potatoes - huge! Bit tough but flavour was good. Harmonica entertainment made for loud & jolly atmosphere. Place was crowded on 16 Dec 2025! Pre-booking advisable.

The Bavarian food met our expectations. Sausages, bread pretzels, sauekraut, mashed potato, oversized cokes, dark beer and a delicious beef burger. Though it was busy the staff still provided a good friendly service. Would recommend

Friendly and fast service. I ordered the pork knuckle and my husband got the Weiners schnitzel. Everything g was delicious, we especially liked the potato dumpling. Classic authentic German cuisine

We were with a group and they put us at a few tables with natural partitions. Made it easier to talk to each other. Had the beef and pork knuckle dish. Plus, the ply dessert with sorbet was so nice and light! Great traditional restaurant to try in this part of Bavaria.

Saw this recommended on-line so thought worth a visit and was not disappointed. Delicious Bavarian sausage platter twinned with a Maß of nice cold Löwenbrau beer. Nice place, good atmosphere. Quieter than other places making this good for conversations with your group.

We only had two days in Munich, sadly so we didn't get to try a lot of places. From my time in the military in Germany, I came to love, Franziskaner beer! We stopped in for a light meal and ended up eating way more than we thought we would! The schnitzel may have been one of, if not the, best plate of food I believe I've ever had! The service was fast and friendly, and the restaurant itself was a long skinny beer hall with well lit seating! To boil it down; the dining experience we had here something that I think will live with me for a very long time!

Popped in this restaurant after visiting the Christmas market at the palace/residence. It's warm and cozy and the service was great. It's a great place to come in and get out of the cold and have a beer. The beer was excellent as German beer always is. I ordered the pork schnitzel with a side of mushroom gravy. The schnitzel was SO good. A very light breading and very tender. The gravy was perfect!!! Full of various mushrooms and not too heavy. The order also comes with potato cucumber salad which is a nice touch. My server was great and very accommodating. They have lots of tables so a good place for big parties.

Great atmosphere and delicious food! We sampled a lot of authentic German dishes including schnitzel, sausages, kasespatzle! Very good! Or and good beer too!

We found this place for lunch on our last day in Munich and it was wonderful! Good service, ambiance outside sitting under an umbrella and food/drinks were great!

Dead smack in front of Louis Vuitton in the old city center, this was a nice recommendation by our hotel concierge. As you enter you notice the traditional Bavarian decor ... The food is German pub fare but in a not so rowdy beer hall ... We ordered a couple of steins of beer and they were delicious ... Mom ordered roasted chicken and I ordered Weinter Schnizel and they were both good, sister ordered lake trout and she said it was great .. I must say the pretzels were nice and hot out of the oven and not too salty and the honey mustard at the table was delicious/ Overall nice and decent meal, nothing special; in and out in a hour which was what we wanted. Service was good and prices a tad higher but you are in the old city center so that didn't surprise us. Everyone we encountered spoke English and a menu in English were given to us ... a solid 6 out of 10 ...

I cannot say enough good things about Zum Franziskaner. It's positioned in an absolutely perfect location with a very large outside seating area for amazing views and people watching. BUT if it's too crowded outside please don't let that deter you. The inside is also very nice for drinks and dining. We did both. One day we stopped for drinks outside and another we had lunch inside. Both were great experiences. I do need to mention that we had dinner reservations at another place when we stopped in for drinks and because the Germans are not as time conscious as we are we did have to flag the waiter down twice. But that's on us...not him. He was very gracious once he knew we were in a hurry. And the day we had food it was really good. Best potato salad we ate on the trip. (And we ate a lot of potato salad!). Drinks, lunch or dinner this is a great place to go to.

We have been traveling in Europe for 10 days, Poland, Hungary and now Germany. This by far is the worst food we have had. The pork was tough and fatty, the sausage was salty and the salad was drowned in dressing. The place was old, which was to be expected, but not charming like you would expect in Europe. Hopefully we will have a better experience in the next few days. After all, it's ALL ABOUT THE FOOD, if the food isn't good there is no point in visiting. Now onto Hofbrauhaus, the oldest brewery for more beer.

We came here for brunch. Had Weißwurst which came with one pretzel. The sausage is good and soft. Not too much flavor and the home made mustard is amazing. Semmelknödel mit Rahmschwammerl was ok: the mushrooms pieces are very few though. Service was good. They speak perfect English. Good ambiance: bright seating area and easy to carry a good conversation

Food was great Ambience is kind of to loud for my opinion but we went there after a Bayern Munich soccer game. Service was great at the beginning but we had to wait for our check almost 30 min.

We had a tasty lunch here. It's a huge restaurant and was very full near the entrance. We were happy to have been seated in the much quieter section further back. We each had a soup and a salad and then shared a kasespaetzle. It was a perfect amount of food for us. Everything was very tasty and fresh.

Great food and great atmosphere! Only docking a star because our waiter was hard to catch and didn't actually ever bring the water we asked for (also getting the check took a really long time). My favorite thing was the shweinshaxe - crispy pork knuckle, it was so flavorful and perfectly cooked!

Wonderfully atmospheric beer hall/ restaurant with a gorgeous "garden room" decorated in traditional Bavarian blue and white. We really enjoyed their Bavarian cuisine such as Weiss wurst, potato salad, sauerkraut and fresh warm pretzels. Highly recommend!

Stumbled in later in the evening our first day in Munich because we were starving and tired of looking around. The menu wasn't the easiest to read but we made due. Our server spoke passable English but not much - and we speak almost no German so he's doing better than we are! Still, he was friendly and we enjoyed our food. My mother tried some beer, I chose the Schnitzel with cranberry and potato salad. My mother chose to go even more traditional (is that possible?) and went with the brats and cabbage. We also had a huge pretzel and mustard to start. They had some dessert options that are probably pretty good but we were full from all the carbs of dinner. This spot is in a good location right in the center of everything and very near to the theater. If I remember correctly it's just across the street from the Tiffany and Co.

A typical Bavarian restaurant that serves typical local food. When we attended they unfortunately did not have the major options that we wanted to order and also we were not allowed to stay much longer than the closing hour even though we have not yet finished the food. But the waiter was nice and friendly. Food was simply ok

Honestly I am surprised by the low reviews. Service was efficient and outdoor seating was pleasant. They weren't packed and we didn't feel rushed. English and other language menus available. Our food was excellent - pork knuckle and sausage sampler. We were all very impressed with the pork as it was tender, juicy, had a crispy skin, delicious gravy and a wonderful potato dumpling on the side. For three people it was plenty of food.

Not clean.. I told our waitress there is no soap in the men's. An hour later there still was no soap so I told her again. Her reaction was an agitated: Tell a male employee! I am not allowed in the men's toilet! I told the man behind the bar. He said 'Ok' and an hour later there still was no soap in the toilet. Sure the kitchen staff uses another toilet, but it makes me wonder if they have soap.. The staff seemed to have too much work, but the food was delicious. I must add that both main courses we ordered were a little salty (really only a little bit).

The food was decent, but not great. The staff was kind but understaffed because we were frequently left waiting trying to flag a waiter down in order to acquire our meals.

Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. Waiter was atrocious and vindictive. Brought the wrong food. Left wine in a bottle after pouring into a glass. Threw the remainder away. Service very slow. People next to us left because the same waiter did not appear. Would not take a credit card and essentially demanded cash. Would not recommend restaurant to anyone for any occasion

We were in Munich for the Christmas markets and while we were walking from the Residenz to Marienplatz it started to rain very hard so we ducked in here for dinner. The place is huge and would be a fun biergarten in the summer. The food and the service were both good. We had the schnitzel, the ente (duck), and the wurst sampler. I'm not a big fan of either wurst or schnitzel, which my family ordered, but I thought that the duck which came with potato dumplings, gravy, and blaukraut was excellent. Our three meals with 1 soft drink, 1 beer, and 1 wine came to about 50 EUR ($68). This place probably gets many tourists as the menu was available in several languages however the German menu has many more items than the menu in other languages. The non-German menu seemed to be mostly wurst and schnitzel.

I have to be honest food is very good here at least what we ordered. We had asparagus soup, mushrooms soup , Caesar salad and sausages. Soups are delicious!!! Service is strange. We feel that our waitress was not happy to serve us. She didn't smiles did not answer our questions about food, did not serve our table the way she served another tables were people speaks native German language:( . I will not suggest to go there, it is a lot of restaurants in Munich and food is very tasty in this city everywhere anyway.

Two beer gardens, patio, beautiful inside, and great service. this is one of the classic examples of the big blue halls in Munich. I recommend you stop into it if the other ones seem overly crowded. It also helps if you like lowenbrau beer. I didn't try any food but I saw some pretzels and assorted other German dishes go by and they look fantastic.

Ok, bear with me as I'm playing catch up on a few reviews! :) My friends and I were walking Munich doing some shopping and touring around on our last day in Germany before flying home. Seeing the name "Franziskaner" I immediately suggested (after a very long day of walking) that we pause for a beer. As we had dinner plans, we did not eat. We just stopped, found a place in the sun to sit and relax, ordered a few Hefeweizens and enjoyed life. If you're out and about in Munich, and need a place for a beer, there are a million options (no, really), but if you're near here, it's worth taking a break! Prost!

Liverloaf! Despite the awful translation, it's quite good. Lesson of the day. An institution. A classic. If you are in Munich and looking for a meal of this variety (my friend described it as a traditional Bavarian meal) then you are in the right place. The service was outstanding, the food quite good, and the experience impeccable. My dining companion ordered me an English menu (they have menus available in many languages, so just ask) and so I was able to select something with a bit more knowledge than in previous dining endeavors around Munich. Sometimes this is good, but mostly I am an adventurous eater so I do not mind a surprise. Regardless, our server spoke perfect English. Probably better than my own. Ok, so what did I get? The Franciscan Duet. I'll translate it: Liverloaf (exactly like it sounds, it tasted like a loaf of very good bologna. That is not an oxymoron!)...resting on a pile of sauerkraut. Accompanied by three delicate smallish sausages. I added on a pretzel from the bread basket, and voila...a very nice Bavarian meal. All that was missing was a beer, but with this amount of food...water was all that could suffice. The verdict: QUITE good. Very good. Filling, but not overpowering. A nice portion actually, despite the weight of each of the items. Tips: *This is a very large restaurant with many tables. Some long and available to fit large groups, or I am told Germans like to sit together sometimes so feel free to sit near people and they will not think you are strange. *You seat yourself. Brilliant! I wish restaurants in the US were like this, it would really negate the need for sheepishly asking "actually, can I have that table over there, the better one that you know I must want?" with the hostesses. Besides the point, seat yourself where ever you wish! *The restroom is downstairs, near the back. I'll be back for a meal with bier. That's how you say it in German, see...I am learning! ;)

When here based on a recommendation from the hotel concierge. This was our first experience with German food, we defiantly found better throughout our travels. We had a reservation but didn't need it.

On our last night visiting Munich, we decided to get some Bavarian fare. After wandering around Marienplatz and the Victualient Market, we came upon this cute little resto. On the advice of a very friendly passerby who overheard us speaking English, we chose to eat in the courtyard beer garden at the back of the bar. A beautiful, romantic spot with stone walls covered in climbing ivy, the courtyard had outdoor heating which we appreciated since it was a cool night. Starting with large Augustiner weissbiers, we decided on ordering the crusty pork roast with potato dumplings in dark beer sauce and the sausage platter with sauerkraut and potatoes. My pork dish was plentiful but of less then average quality. A bit of a disappointment. My husband enjoyed his sausage dish, but he wished there had been more than 3 kinds of sausage. On a positive note, our waiter was super friendly and the service edit time was good. If we returned again, we would stick to just drinking beer and enjoying the ambiance.

Good local restaurant to sample some authentic Bavarian cuisine. The slightly olde worlde interior was cosy and inviting on a rainy autumn evening and we were encouraged by the number of locals that seemed to be eating there too. Turns out they have menus in plenty of different languages so there weren't any challenges there. I really enjoyed the starter of obatzda that we shared, which I'd suggested adding last minute - it's a delicacy of soft cheese (usually Camembert) and butter, and as tasty as it was probably calorific! The portion sizes were generous and we all struggled to finish main course. I chose another very typical local dish of Bavarian boiled beef which was tender and tasty as well. Our waitress was extremely friendly and patient with us, and I would recommend a relaxed, reasonably-priced dinner here - you'll be well taken care of!

Conveniently located near tourist attractions and opens on Sunday. The food and drinks are very representative of the Bavarian region of Germany. The service was overall good, but not nearly as great as some of the other restaurants in the area.

When you are not adventurous, like me you book a multi city tour. With a tour, you get to meet people from all over the world on your bus! Now it seems that most people that book first class tours are from the ages of 50-80. You would think that with this age group, there would be more of a conservative attitude. Nope, these folks can drink! I've never seen people drink so much alcohol in my life! Let me clarify, I am not a drinker but if people drink, that's their prerogative. I was able to take some photos of beer and since Münich produces most of the beer the country drinks, I was able to take some photos of different beers. The dünkel or dark beer is not like Guinness. It's a much smoother taste than the lighter pilsner type. The food hear was really good, the veal sausage were slightly grilled and the potatoes had a bit of horseradish grated into it. The dessert was fantastic. Overall this place is solid and since it was Saturday Night, it seemed that everybody was out eating! So be prepared to face major crowds here on the weekends!

Zum Franziskaner Residenzstraße 9, München On our first day in Munich in December 2019 my wife and I walked past his place and from the outside it looked very nice, so we decided we would come for dinner. However, avoid this place - it is a real Tourist Trap. It would seem now in retrospect that they have two sets of rooms. If you come in and ask for a table in German they send you one way. Ask for one in English (or one for the other 4 languages the menu is in - yes the menu for tourists is in 5 languages) then they shuffle you off to the "tourist" rooms. We were given the menus and we began by ordering a bottle of Riesling - 34,00 €. Our waiter left and shortly returned with a bottle of wine labeled Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll which he found to be a greatly amusing name. At 34,00 € I was not as amused. To start we both ordered Pfannkuchensuppe which is Beef broth with crepe strips and chives. I have had this many times before (my 6th trip to Germany) so I know how it should be. This was like licking a block of salt. Things did not get any better with the main course for me but my wife said her fish was good. Our waiter was pretty much a jerk. Many waiters in big tourist cities figure "I am never going to see you again so why bother to service your table." Needless to say I left Zum Fanziskaner with a bad taste in my mouth in more ways than one. Avoid!

I finally got my sausages. (That's what she said?!) OK, all jokes aside, Zum Franziskaner is where I really delved into the heart of Bavarian cuisine. A weiss beer plus the sausage plate = happy AZ. Truth. I had five different sausages atop sauerkraut (seriously, people need to get on the kraut wagon in the U.S. It's SO good) with one of those dumpling-type things filled my belly to the max. But no, we were not done. My lovely lady date and I also shared a green salad (very good and green!). Face it, when you're imbibing on massive amounts of sausage over the course of a few days, you need to throw a vegetable in there now and again. This salad did the trick. We ended our Bavarian dining experience with the non-apple strudel dessert and two espressos. The dessert was divine. Get it, seriously. Some notes: -Ask for the English menu, they have one. -If you want the dessert (number 34 on the menu I believe), order it ahead of time. It takes 20 minutes at least. But do order it. It's like a giant fresh elephant ear with raisins. OH YES. -They DO accept credit cards, but won't split the bill. Service was lovely and friendly. I would definitely come back here for another sausage feast and the dessert.* *I would NOT, however, come back for the cranky old man who SSHHHED us. What a grouch. Bitte.

This place is really hard to find!....but I finally managed to find it. I just HAD to come here because Franziskaner is one of my favorite beers and I drink it all the time in the US. The restaurant was rather empty, but it was a Tuesday night at 10pm so it is understandable. I ordered a beer (of course!) and the veal sausage sampler. It was fantastic!....I loved all the sausages (there were 5 different kinds), but really honed in on the 3 that were grilled. They were so yummy. The sauerkraut was surprisingly good and makes me think that people in the US must not know how to make it properly, because it was quite good. They have fresh baked pretzels on the tables with mustard, which were really yummy too!

Definitely some good food to be had here, but man I haven't seen worse service in all of Europe except Paris. The (overall fairly surly) waiter spilled super hot gravy all over my dad's pants without so much as a sorry or any compensation. To be fair, the table next to us had quite the jovial waiter who I really wanted to hijack about 5 minutes into the meal. Their spaetzle (amazingly creamy) and schnitzel (crazy tender) are pretty awesome, but considering their prices and service there are a million other places in Munich I'd rather go.

If you want to taste the great Bavarian food, you have to go the "Gaststätte: Zum Franziskaner"! You will love it! Superb dishes and great beers and wines, but also tasteful coffees will surprise you! - And do not forget to try the delicious food! Guten Appetit! Typical Bavarian interior and a very nice location in the inner city!

The service was minimal, the food was mediocre. We ordered a cheese plate with bread and got a cheese plate with ONE piece of bread torn apart on the side. The waiter the. Brought in the INFAMOUS BASKET OF BREAD (infamous because it IS NOT FREE; EACH PICE IS €1.50!!!). I skied if there was a charge. My wife had mediocre wine. I had coffee (refills cost!!). A nice and very traditional German restaurant with a cool terrace where you'll be able to eat good potato salad and drink all kinds of beers! Would totally go again, especially in summer!

This should be a can't-fail location, but with inattentive staff and sub-par food, this Franziskaner does indeed fail. At this price point, the usage of the usual pan-Bavarian convenience products from the kitchen shouldn't be a surprise. But why do even the sausages come at such a low quality? Why don't they at least use the regular sweet mustard, but instead a bad copy? Look elsewhere for "authentic".

We so enjoyed the apple strudel -- so amazingly delicious. Best we had in Munich. Oh and Wheat beer was pretty darn amazing too.

I don't know what people complain about. This place is a landmark and almost must for tourists. Food is okay but the beer is excellent. Prices aren't unreasonable. There isn't a long wait and overall they're pretty nice here. It's very conveniently situated near the Residenz and many other things. I think if you want a decent benchmark of german fare and some famous beer, this is a good place to go.

We ordered wine in English and were served vinegar by the waitress. The waitress knew we where English speakers and did this with malice. When we asked about speaking to the manager in German she was offended and took her time to get the manager. When finally the manager arrived, he told us that "it is only our opinion that the wine is not good." He said this with an attitude in a passive aggressive and unapologetic manner. The waitress also did not give us back our change and tipped her self. This place does not understand customer service and disrespects customers, especially Americans.

Good fare at reasonable prices. Had the goose and potato dumplings with red cabbage. Decent, standard Bavarian food.

Everything was great. We tried both soups and they were very delicious. We wanted to try true German food and this was the place. Just off the Matienplatz Square by two blocks. Worth the trip. For our main courses we tried the Pork Knuckle and the bratwurst. The pork knuckle was a lot of food and two can share. But both were very good and we enjoyed them.

I was fully aware that this restaurant is mostly an expensive tourist trap, but I wouldn't have cared as long as service and food were good. Which they weren't. We were placed in the Studentensaal, which was still pretty empty. The waiter was nice and prompt, but that's about it. Weißbier had no foam, mineral water and Apfelschorle was the cheapest stuff, served in the original bottles, we had to pour it ourselves. Someone in our group wanted the mineral water to be warm, so not from the fridge. They couldn't oblige. Every two-bit restaurant has either mineral water at room temperature available or brings you some sort of contraption filled with hot water to the table. Not this one. The waiter placed the water bottle next to a candle on the table in the hope that it gets warmed up. Phenomenal idea. As for the food, we had: Kürbiscremesuppe, Zanderfilet, Wiener Schnitzel vom Kalb, Gänsebrust, and Zwiebelrostbraten. The soup was just a totally forgettable affair. You barely could taste any pumpkin, it was super-watery and someone thought it prune to spice things up with an incredible amount of salt. The Zander was relatively tiny, fish bones, quite large ones, were not taken out, taste was bland. The Schnitzel was okay-ish, but far from large enough for the price. The Gänsebrust was also okay-ish, but the portion was tiny for the price. The Zwiebelrostbraten tasted okay, even good, but it was nowhere near the advertised 280 grams, perhaps 200 grams tops. Generally, you could taste that corners were cut everywhere, lots of flavour enhancers and other food additives were used in preparing the food. I get it, it's a big restaurant that has to serve people quickly, but you pay an insane amount of money for the food, and unfortunately it's nowhere near justified. If you're a tourist, best take your business elsewhere and avoid this trap.

The food was OK, sausages were good but the rosti potatoes were way undercooked. The service though was horrible. Better go somewhere else.
