Rue la bastille

My kids found this place with their noses as they walked down the street. It smelled so good, that they insisted that we go back for lunch. The owner/chef was super friendly and explained the options while he cut up a huge amount of mushrooms. There is no menu, he cooks perfectly the vegetables that he gets that day. You get to choose a base and then a meat and then 3 vegetables. There is also a veggie option (5 veg maybe?). they then put it in their oven to reheat it and bring it to your table. Apparently we were lucky and they had some lovely chicken quarters with tomatoes that were apparently amazing (according to my kids). We rated this as one of the top (if not the BEST) meal we had on our 10 day vacation.

Do you plan your meals when you travel ✈️? We're not the type of family who plans... anything! 🤣 We usually wander and decide what to do whenever we feel like it, whether we're talking about a meal or anything else. 😇 You know, we planned the first night of our honeymoon the day before we left... and we didn't plan anything besides that first night! 😅 The output of such spontaneity usually is positive... but sometimes it's more complicated, especially since we're 3. Cause our son becomes annoyed and annoying when he's hungry. And then nothing is good enough for him. 😔 So that day in Amsterdam 🇳🇱, it was lunch time and I simply had no clue about what to eat. Our son wanted sushi 🍣, as always, but we didn't know where to find a (good and affordable) sushi place nearby. My wife checked on Maps and she found Rue La Bastille, a Mediterranean place with great ratings. She said "you're gonna like it: there's couscous". I was surprised cause she usually isn't a big fan but, ok, I'm always down with couscous! 😃 Turns out it's a place where you can create your own dish. You choose your cereal then your toppings, like with a poke bowl. So we thought our son would find something he wanted. But no. Nothing. Only protests. So we ended up ordering 2 plates only, and filling them with things we thought he would eat.... which he did but he was in a very bad mood, and so were we. 😤 The place is quite simple but cool, even if there is no AC and the weather was really hot that day. 🥵 The clerk was laid-back, really understanding about the situation. I don't think I could be so patient with a kid who's not mine (or even with mine!). 👏 I picked couscous, of course, and my wife picked rice. And we topped them with pretty much the same toppings. The food was good. And they had unusual (canned) drink options. But... we paid €53 for 2 plates of precooked microwaved food and 4 drinks, so each plate was something like €20. That's too much for this type of food in my opinion 👎: €12 approx would sound fair... like a poke bowl, basically. 🤷 . . . Quality & taste: 8/10 Quantities: 9/10 Atmosphere: 6/10 Originality: 7/10 Ratio price / quality: 6/10 Service: 10/10 How I felt afterwards: 7/10

One of the best meals we’ve had on our European trip. Everything is fresh, and cooked after you order, not microwaved. Walk in, choose your chicken or vegetarian main, rice and three sides, sit down and wait for it to be brought to your table. We had everything between us and it was massive, and delicious. Lovely atmosphere and great staff.

Rue La Bastille is one of the coziest hidden gems in Amsterdam. It offers authentic, healthy, and delicious food and the self-made baklava is a must-try. What makes it truly special are the people who work there; their warmth gives the place a real soul. It feels like a small piece of Algeria tucked in the heart of Amsterdam. There’s no fixed menu every day brings something new and full of flavor. Highly recommended. Enjoy! 🇩🇿☕🍰

My intuition said that this place will be amazing and actually surpassed that. Amazing Algerian cuisine and the staff are super nice. Definitely 5 stars in all.
