"Arderne Gardens: Cape Town's Secret Garden When you search for "gardens" and " Cape Town ," you will inevitably be directed to the Company's Garden or world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens . Sure, those are worth a visit, but for something a little more unique and off the beaten path, vislt the Arderne Gardens. What was once a family's private estate is now property of the city and one of the finest collections of exotic trees in South Africa. The original owner, an English timber merchant, collected seedlings from all over the world. Six of the trees have now been distinguished for their age and significance by the City of Cape Town as 'Champion Trees,' one of the most popular trees being the vast Moreton Bay Fig in this photo. There are a few different areas within the gardens—a great lawn beneath a giant Norfolk Pine, a Japanese inspired koi pond, and one section filled with hydrangea bushes (resembling something straight out of Alice in Wonderland). On any given weekend, you'll brush past groups of girls in bright orange or maybe turquoise taffeta dresses at the entrance. The gardens are a cultural gathering point for some in the community, and the giant fig is known as the wedding tree, where newlyweds have their photo taken. If you're looking to escape the chaos and see a hidden gem, Arderne is perfect place for a romantic stroll or afternoon picnic."

Ardene Gardens 🌿🐿️ is the perfect place to escape the rush of the city. I often take my dog there for walks, and sometimes I go for a run — it always feels so safe and peaceful among the lush greenery. There’s such a wonderful variety of plants, and the gardens have a rich history, lovingly cared for by a dedicated community. There’s even a donation box where visitors can contribute, and you can always see the difference — they’re constantly improving and maintaining the space. Security guards at the gate make it feel very safe, and it’s a delight to see squirrels playing all around. It’s truly a lovely place for families — perfect for picnics, children playing near the ponds and water features, and simply enjoying the cool, fresh air. The gardens are beautifully maintained, and you’ll even spot guineafowl with their tiny chicks wandering about. I absolutely love Ardene Gardens — thank you for keeping such a beautiful, peaceful space in our city! 💚

Beautiful garden, with wheelchair friendly walkways and ample seating. First time here in about 10 years and it's definitely been improved. Lovely for a picnic with friends, family or your school. Parking can be a problem, so either arrive early or be prepared to walk.

This park really is a hidden gem in the heart of Claremont - peaceful, serene, wholesome, calm, and breathtakingly beautiful. Some of the oldest and most exotic trees grow here and reading up on the history is interesting. Perfect for picnics on the manicured lawn and super child friendly.. security at the entrance - strictly no alcohol allowed. There’s a toilet at the entrance. Seems dog friendly but we only saw dogs on leashes.

A gorgeous arboretum of champion trees amidst a busy suburb, which is so well used by so many: bookclub readers galore, baby-shower/birthday party attendees. Fascinating alien trees with great signage information. Highly recommend.

Absolutely stunning park for picnics, photoshoots and just a calming and tranquil break-away. The giant trees, lush green lawns, and wildlife are so beautiful.

Glorious, well kept garden. One would never expect this little gem to be tucked away on the main road in Claremont. It’s a perfect spot to breathe if you are waiting for anyone at one of the medical centres across the road. I loved having a genuinely quiet spot in the city on a Sunday. Enough benches, and waste bins. With a good mix of paths and grass spaces along with a wetland area it’s a happily place. Quite popular for photo shoots. All dogs must be on leash. Security does patrols which helps with feeling safe. There is a school with a hockey field bordering the property, so you may hear match sounds but only in one section.

Safe, peaceful place in the presence of ancient giants that will easily live for another 180 years, if given the opportunity.
