"The Drive of Your Life Declared "the world's best road trip" by the Guardian, a drive along western Norway 's 5.2 mile Atlantic Ocean Road is certainly bound to be inspiring. The road connects the mainland with several small islands of an archipelago, winding across the ocean, passing by lighthouses, rugged landscape and some of the most beautiful ocean terrain in the country. In some places the road actually resembles a roller coaster track, and is particularly dramatic when wind and tide send waves crashing up and over the road itself."

The road is nice, but short and, in fact, only has one bridge that is amazing. I drove it with nice calm weather, and the experience is probably different under harsher conditions. Take it if on your path, but it doesn’t deserve a detour- there are far more beautiful places in Norway.

Cool place with unbelievable path between islands. Easily assesible by car, but no pedestrian line which is sad for Travellers without car. Hovewer, there's a public bus which has a few stops within the road.

It’s a great place to visit if you want to enjoy the beauty of ocean and its sound. I would recommend not to miss the round tour if the weather is good

Greatly enjoyed the drive in our rental vehicle. We had several hours for excursions while our cruise ship was in port. The mid October day was partly to mostly cloudy yet enjoyable compared to overcast and drizzly days previous. We found some lovely historic churches that tourists would like. One challenge was finding a way to pay for fuel for the rental car. Our credit cards didn't work. You'll need some kind of PIN, that we didn't have and dropped the car off about 3/4 tank full. There was no place to drop off a key in the return lot and the office and airport were closed. The rental car phone number wasn't being answered for us and several othets. Very odd, so we left the keys in the vehicle, then sent a note to the company advising of the circumstances. Beware being charged too much for Auto Insurance at the car agency.

Western Norway can be cold and wet - like our last visit, or just colder and with snow - and sometimes sunny if you get amazingly lucky, but as for ‘the roads to have visited’ bucket list this little stretch is a classic - and that includes the hassle of getting there as it’s not really something you pass by on the way somewhere - it requires targeting!

The road is nice, but very overrated. not so worth the long drive north if it is not on the way. The iconic bridge is nice, and there are a couple of walking ways worth it. Note the wind is very strong anc cold, so it is not fun to be outside.

Summary: Completely disagree with people who have said it’s not worth it. This drive is breathtaking and a once in a lifetime experience for many. More details: we turned up at 11pm during the summer, and seeing the sky in pastel colours as the sun was setting was perfect. Getting there so late also meant that it was relatively empty. There are numerous rest stops all the wall down, with a few people parking up to stay the night with a view of the bridge and the tiny islands. There is a 10-15 minute walkway around the largest island which gives fantastic views of the Atlantic. It has a handrail for most it, but it dips down at places to allow access to the rocks below to scramble upon. Lots of people had made rock piles, which was a beautiful way of displaying the presence of other people without it interfering with the view, in fact they enhanced it. There were no toilets that I could see.

Yelp
What a beautiful little local restaurant. Our tour group came to have dinner here, and everything was extremely tasty. We had this traditional fish stew that was tomato-based, and it really hit the spot. I also loved the dessert, which was a flan dish. The staff was extremely nice, even though we only spoke English. They were both professional and courteous, and we will remember this experience for quite some time. Thank you so much for the great meal!

Yelp
Don't know why this is not packed all the time. Awesome food, including the whale beef. (The best meat ever) Great tasting food, friendly service (Dutch lady) and nice views. We stumbled upon this place by luck, and we felt really lucky. Highly recommend. Not a very big place, but check out the second floor. We had a large party with not easy to please people, but we all loved it. Of course the prices are Norwegian prices, so not cheap. But very worth it.

Yelp
This is a traditional Norwegian buffet just off the Atlantic road! Everything is home cooked and fresh right off the stove! You will not be disappointed with the food quality! Top notch just like your grandmas home cooked meals!

Yelp
We went to this restaurant today, on a Monday at 5 pm, tried to enter and we were met by a very sour woman telling us very rudely it was closed, even though the restaurant was buzzing with ppl and the "Open" sign clearly visible. Now I cannot say how the food is as we did not manage to eat there but I can already tell the service was horrible.
